What exactly does the clarifying in a clarifying shampoo

I was just curious to see if anyone knows what ingredients actually clarify the scalp, particularly in clarifying shampoo.

For those who have clarifyed with shampoo and ACV, which one did you like better?

I'm not sure about the ingredients in the shampoo, but I prefer doing a ACV rinse. I think it works better for me.
