What does this mean? When I flat iron my hair..

I was a natural and relaxed a year or so ago. I am now transitioning to natural again because my hair broke out in the front and it has gotten thinner. But anyways, when I flat iron the front part of my hair, the hair doesn't have a natural bounce and it comes out STIFF AND HARD and CRUNCHY. What does that mean? It is not just the ends is the hair from root to tip that comes out like this but this only happens to the front part of my hair near my edges.

Is it a lack of protein? Moisture?

Good question; I'd like to know too. When this happens to me, it's usually the tool I'm using. Or maybe too much product.

Since it only happens to that one particular spot, it could be that the hair is very damaged, and putting heat on it is just making it worse. When hair is severely damaged it's not easy to style with hot tools.

I occasionally flat iron my hair (for BKT), and I was having that issue with my ends. For me, it was a MOISTURE problem. Last time I flat-ironed, I DC'd REALLY good on Sunday, and FI'd on Thursday, and my hair was a WHOLE new creature - super soft and slick. I've got really fine strands, so body is kinda - yeah, no - but I dare say I might have had a LITTLE body. I actually had some 'swang' in my hair!

Try a GOOD moist DC (I'd suggest adding honeyquat, and if you don't have that, some straight honey) shortly before flatironing, making sure to super soak your trouble spot, and see if that helps any.

Ok thanks ladies. The hair in that area is also shorter than the rest of my hair and feels very dry. I will be using some good Dc tomorrow and see what that does to it.

Do you use a lot of product on the front of your hair, such as gel? It sounds like product build up. Hair doesn't do well under heat when the heat is also cooking product into your hair, hence the stiffness. If it is, you may need to clarify, then do a moisturizing dc.
