What do you think of Cathy Howse?

Do you agree with her approach to hair growth? She has a very basic, common-sense approach.

Hence, she doesn't do protective styles or sulfate-free shampoo. (She says that she wears her hair down everyday).

She does have lovely hair. Have you read her book or checked out her website? If so, what do you think of her system?

I've read about her a while back, but not in depth. I can't personally wear my hair out every single day (when I was relaxed). Anytime I heard a strand pop against my clothes, I'd cringe. Relaxed and natural, protective styles help me retain the most length. But, I don't think a complicated regimen is necessary for healthy hair.

Cathy Howse is where I started my healthy hair journey before finding this forum. Her products and some of her techniques didn't work well for me. But she had a lot of common sense ideas that changed my perception about AA hair. She opened the gate for me to think outside the box and realize how easy it can be to care for textured hair.

I agree. I don't like that half the content of her book is trying to sell her products.

BUT the other half contains good, common sense hair facts that helped me dispel a lot of myths floating around about black hair.

Definitely, her products did nothing for my hair. I hate it when people try to push products on those with "hard to grow" textured hair when in reality majority of it is technique. I grew my hair when I had very few products that actually worked. And now i'm at a point where I can make my own products using natural ingredients if I needed too.

I have her book. Its a great read. I learned alot about what makes up hair and different hair techniques to grow long hair. I don't practice everything she does, but it did provide a great start to my hair journey.

For example: The first time I was relaxed, I probably washed my hair like once a month with any 'ol shampoo (White Rain :nono:) and I never deep conditoned my hair. :nono:

She was the first one to introduce the concept of washing hair every 4 to 7 days and conditioning the hair to me. Now I HAVE to wash my hair & deep condition my hair every week. (I never bought any of her products though).

I will say that if you have been around on hair boards long enough, you probably will see common concepts stated here in her book.

I was never that interested in her protocol but her methods were pretty popular on this board in the early to mid 00s. I'm sure they worked for quite a few people.

Me too. I found her website before finding LHCF. She was the first person to educate me about the importance of regular moisturising. Her products are a little overpriced for what they are and I don't agree with her advice on never trimming.

I just got her Deep Conditioner in the Mail today. 1st product of her's I've ever purchased.:ohwell:

So, I'll be curious to see if/how much I like it.:look:

I haven't read up on her or any of her philosophies.....

Hi,

Cathy Howse book was the first book I read when I got very serious about maintaining healthy hair. Her book is basic and to the point. I learned what to look for when purchasing the right products and what products that can cause hair damage.
I would recommend this book for someone who is ready to take charge of caring and maintaining their own hair.

Its a good to have in your personal library.

Cathy Howse provided me with an excellent canvas and enabled me to really start making a difference in the way I saw my hair. Once I read the book I started to make small changes which led me to this forum then I didn't look back. I don't really follow everything she says, but I do wash and condition weekly, moisturise and try to stay away from brushes!

I bought her conditioner whn I first stated on my hhj exactly a yr ago and I hate tht stuff! It leaves my hair so tangled, it has no slip, and my scalp doesnt like peppermint oil cause everytime I use a product with it, I get severe dandruff. Her hair is cute though

Never used her stuff because the ingredients didn't look good...didn't read her book but it seems like some other "gurus," like Chicoro have techniques based off hers. I like Chicoro's book so maybe I'd like Cathy Howse's too before she added all the stuff about her products...

I haven't read the book. However, I do appreciate the techniques used as a method of keeping my hair healthy.

I have her book and am doing the Cathy Howse Challenge. I haven't ordered her products but use her regimen and her recipe for a DC. It works for me.

I bought her book a year ago. It helped dispel a lot of myths about afro textured hair for me and gave me a simple, common sense approach to taking care of my hair. I do look over it from time to time.

I heard that her first book was better than the 2nd one (which I think was just a remake of the first one), and that in the first book she wasn't trying to push products on the readers.

I heard about Cathy Howse from a co-worker. I went to her website and was not impressed by her hair or the testimonials, so I never bought her book or products and I do not use any of her techniques.

Cathy Howse's hair reminds me of mine before I got on this HHJ....Semi-long with see thru ends :nono:
