Do you think hair should get shorter or longer as we age?

It depends on your overall style, your cut, and how rock it IMO. I typically like shorter hair on older women but if you frame your face or dress to compliment your hair your should be good to go. Also, I LOVE silver hair on older ladies. It looks to regal and beautiful!

I plan on having long hair to pin up as I age. My personal preference is longer as you get older. I wore all the short/ trendy styles when I was younger... now I'm moving into pin ups like my late grandmother used to do.

Have you ever seen HBO's "Tell me you love me"? The older lady that is the psychologist has the prettiest shoulder length all grey/white hair. I love the style on her and it has lots of body and movement.

As long as it is cute and sexy (yes sexy even if older) I will be fine.

I agree: It totally depends on personal style. I happened to love silver hair. Even now, I love my little colony of long silver hairs that peek through. I can't wait until I have a few more!

However, I don't like yellowing silver hair (from products and residue), and would defintely keep that in order as I age.

ITA face shape is also important. I dont think people with long faces look too hot with long gangly straight hair...no matter what age.

I feel it's always up to the individual and how comfortable she feels with herself and her hair length. I do believe that black women in particular, look more exotic with long hair and can look younger with long hair as they grow older. IMO, not all races can pull this off as beautifully.

When it comes to kids, I think it should get longer because they're still growing and developing. However, adults have too many variables for it to be that cut and dry such as: health, nutrition, genetics, personal style/preferences, etc.

I agree.
I think this automatic older woman = shorter hair can actually have an aging effect because it becomes associated with older woman. It totally depends on the woman. Some women look younger with longer hair.

Another thing to consider is that a lot of the magazines and stylist pushing this rule cater primarily to white customers and on average they age differently so we should be mindful of this when running out to cut our hair.

If my hair should get thin when I'm older I'll just texlax to get extra fullness instead of a full relaxer or go natural,but maintain whatever length I liked the most, even if long.

I say, personal preference as long as the style accentuates the positive. I have seen both beautiful short styles and beautiful long styles on more mature women. I also like gray as long as the hair is healthy and nicely styled.

I plan to have mine mid back length and salt and pepper, then gray...at least that's what I say now.

At 49, I don't color yet.

I for one want to be one of those old styling mamas with long salt and pepper hair down my back, wearing sweater sets, skirts, pointy toe slingbacks w/ the kitten heel while clutching a beautiful stand of pearls.

I think that as we age, society tells us that we are less sexy and I think women cut their hair because it's more androgynous (sp). Our society tells us that older women cannot be sexy! This is my take also. If you want to cut your hair off, cool but I hate when stylist stress that you're supposed to cut it off when you get older like it's the rule or something.

I agree
It's only recently that we've had it accepted that a woman could hold onto her sex appear/sensuality past 30. My gran aunts have all shared more than enough stories of how as soon as they became mothers or hit age xx they were expected to leave anything sexy, stylish, or cute behind. Women are/were expected to become neutral beings as they got older.

I think long hair is very unexpected on an older woman and often has a de-aging affect. My decision to cut my hair will rely solely on how my face ages and the condition of my hair, not some arbitrary rule made up by a bunch of people.

I'm actually thinking of cutting my hair now, I adore Rihanna's hair cut.
