What do you base your scalp with?

Hi Ladies,

Last January (Jan. 3rd to be exact), I based my scalp with the ORS Dry Scalp Relief before getting my touch-up and I got a small burn. It says on the bottle that it's good for basing the scalp and now I think otherwise. I want something heavier.

I am looking for something w/o mineral oil or petroleum oil in it. That was the reason I bought the ORS, because it doesn't have either in it.

I'm getting my touch-up tonight...so answer quickly.

I use Elucence's Balm....but you wouldn't be able to get that tonight....

How about Vaseline?

I used Castor Oil, followed by Blue Duchess hair grease, (which is basically a petrolatum based product I use ONLY for basing my scalp), but it has aloe in it, which is very soothing.

I didn't get ANY burns when I used this combo.

If I remember correctly that ORS scalp relief contains an exfoliant so I can see why it wouldn't be good to base the scalp with. Let me take a look at my dad's bottle.... Ok it does say it can be used before or after a relaxer but on the other side it mentions containing alpha hydroxy acids which exfoliate. Seems to me that that would cause the scalp to be more irritated which is definitely a no-no before a relaxer.

Not inordinately so Crys - no I don't think so. If you are really worried there is some pink stuff specifically made for this. But I've checked it out and it seems to be mostly Petroleum.....

Seems like it's safe to just use Vaseline to me. I use it when I forget my Elucence and did routinely before I had it.

I have some old mineral oil/petroleum based hair grease that I use now only for basing my scalp. I used to use this stuff on my hair

before I found this board. I wonder if this stuff hinders the relaxer process???
