2011 was truly a learning phase for my hair. I did my BC in winter 2010; however I wore wigs as my PS until around April, so I never really did much to my hair. I really began to understand my hair as I started to wear it out more often.
What I learned about my hair in 2011:
-My hair loves DCing with steam
-My hair loves CJ and QB
-My hair needs to stay away form heat (i have done 3 trims since may to get rid of damage cause by a blowdryer resulting in a total of 2.5 inches off)
-Using Wigs as a PS is my best option because over manipulation cause breakage at the crown
-While my hair loves the moisture I need to do a protein treatment at least 2x a month.
-At this length wet bunning is because my hair is way too thick and it never fits into the bun.
-Wash-n-go, should be a Wash-apply gel-n-take forever to dry on my hair (I'll try it agian when I reach my goal, but for now it's more work than it's worth)
-Twistouts are my absolute fav style (see 2 year progess album)
-finger detangling works best on my hair; however I need to use my denman before I shampoo
-Shampooing 2x a month works for me
-My hair loves co-washing
-My hair hates air drying
-with proper DC and heat protectants I can use heat to my advantage.
-half wigs are excellent for protective styling
-health is more important than length.
I learned my hair is far softer and more delicate than I ever knew. It does not need a lot of heat or any chemicals in order to be manageable. It grows like a wildfire and if I'm not seeing length, I am having issues with retention, most likely due to mechanical damage. I have learned that my hair loves water, creams and oils and hates rough treatment. Most importantly, I have learned that my hair in its natural state is beautiful --even if I don't always feel that way.
2 Dying my hair jet black seems to make my hair smoother for some reason.
3 Sulfate-free shampoos are not the business.
4 Week 10 of a stretch is when I should really start to be careful with my new growth.
5 My hair likes to pretend it's a Transformer. Shoulder length one day, grazing APL the 6 next.
7 Heat is not the enemy
8 Brushing is not the enemy
9 Sulfate is not the enemy
10 Petroleum is the real enemy
11 Dusting is amazing
12 There is no such thing as "good" hair
13 I can grow hair as long and healthy as I please
And Finally....*insert drum roll*
14 There are only three products, when used in combination, that moisturize my hair: Garnier Fructis leave in conditioner, Hawaiian Silky 14-in-1, and my personal mix of shea butter and essential oils. I should stop buying all these products just because I THINK they'll be better.
I've learned so far.....
~My hair hates EVOO as a leave-in/sealant. Only works well as a prepoo.
~I have to wash my hair in sections now.
~I have to DC w/out heat mostly then finish up under the dryer for maybe 10mins(anymore time under the dryer and my hair will be hard, dry, and tangled).
~I can't do a lot of twistouts/natural styles that much without having SSK's AND I CAN'T WET/DAMP BUN!!!
~I have to detangle with a bigger comb and follow up with a smaller comb (I use to only use a big comb and was not getting all of my shed hair out).
~I have to take vitamins for my health as well as my hair
~I have to keep my hair in "stretch" styles/my hair does better with a little heat and low manipulation styles.
I must DC EVERY week! (and I'm going back to my Motions Moisture Plus! Why did I ever stop using it)
Vitamins are my friend.
I can wet bun and still retain length.
My hair is more resilient than I thought.
I can color my hair (I have greys) but I have to go darker, NEVER lighter!
Rollers are my friend.
Listen to what my hair is telling me.....Don't try to be cute wearing it out EVERYDAY! Switch it up!
If CON green ever comes back I will be buying it by the case!
I need to dust my ends on a regular basis, organic products help save my ends in between clipping my ends, and Alma in my conditioner saves me from henna'ing as often.
1) YES WE CAN--go natural! LOL
2) I do actually have a curl pattern. I sincerely did not know this until it showed up during my transition. Now, after the BC even more apparent.
3) Just say "Nay" to Shea!
1. Kindly decline some peoples 'advice '
2. Not to take out my twists until I M ready to wash and redo them. Otherwise I will just get lazy sleep on them and allow them to tangled.
3. STOP BEING LAZY
4. I don't have to buy the latest craze, my hair is growing faster than I realize.
This year I need to figure out what to do with all the junk I bought in yhw beginning of my journey.
1. If my scalp isn't healthy, my hair won't be either.
2. Remove shed hair first before doing anything else to my hair.
3. My scalp loves basic ingredients and ingredients are more important than products.
4. My hair can't absorb heavy products like shea, but combine it with oil and my hair is then happy.
5. 30 minutes under a heat cap is all I need, no overnights, steaming, etc.
6. If I can get the moisture right when I condition, I can twist my hair with anything.
7. I can wash my hair in twists but they can never be worn out of the house again
8. That increasing time for anything does not improve my results (henna, conditioning, etc.)
9. I can trust myself. Others have good intentions but I walk around with this head 365 days.
1.) That just because my hair is loced doesn't mean I should not treat it like lace...
2.) ayervedic herbs are worth the time
3.) Castor Oil is my friend
4.) Cream conditioners are the devil for my hair. Infusium 23 only
5.) I love natural textured wigs
6.) I must brush my hair daily OR keep it covered at all times (AZ is dry and dusty)
7.) Never ever ever give away/ loan out my bonnet dryer.
8.) I must never go more than one week between washing
