What did 2011 teach you about your hair???

This year was a good year :yep:

I learnt:
- the products that work with my hair so i can consistently retain moisture. this is a very recent lesson. i was about to go broke buying up everything i saw on here so i'm glad i found things that work (WEN fig, qhemet, mudwash)

- that absolutely nobody goes in my hair. it's coarse but not tough, you don't have to fight with it, dang! -- this includes my mother :look:

- that with time and patience i can master finger detangling and ditch the comb. this so far is helping to minimize breakage and unnecessary shedding

That the fake bun I relied so heavily on all year was tearing out my hair. *sigh* But I am on the road to recovery.

That I CAN wear wigs and not look stupid.

My scalp:

Doesn't like relaxer or commercial leave-ins.

Does love scalp treatments with garlic/tumeric/EO's :yep:

My hair:

Is very porous naturally, so Roux porosity control, clear rinses and frequent mild protein tx will have to be permanent in my reggie.

Seems to hold moisture better when straightened

Can be happy on water and oil.

Feels better when I DC without heat.

I noticed the more I do twist outs the more my hair grows. My twist outs lasts a week and prevents me from manipulating my hair.

My hair absorbs moisture better in a twist out then when its in its curly state

Wash and go's make my hair tangle and causes a lot of breakage.

My hair doesn't like too much protein. I think once or twice a month is enough.

The longer I keep the twists in my hair the longer my twist outs lasts.

My hair likes to be detangled in sections and braided before styling.

Deep conditioning on dry hair with my steamer is like heaven for my hair.

I learned that I must:

- Leave it alone
- DC less often
- DC with heat
- Continue using ceramides
- Increase the moisture and decrease the protein
- Dilute my shampoos
- Stop sampling every oil I see and stick to the ones that have proven to be effective

Move my bun around. The breakage I got from not do so was horrendous.

But I did retain length on the sides. :look:

J'ai la Joie de Vie!!!!

Consistency pays off. I CAN stick to a regimen. I CAN continually use products that work for me without being tempted to try everything new/hyped about.

There are a ton of products, methods, etc that work great for a lot of people, but you don't have to try them all. Why try to fix something that isn't broken?

My hair missed protein. It was a staple in my regimen a few years back, but since them, my hairs been lacking it and I had only focused on moisture...then I remembered how great my hair was back then. I started using hydrolyzed keratin just a couple of days ago and already my hair is stronger, springs back, breaks less...and I'm hoping this will help me hold onto moisture better/longer

I learned that leaving my hair alone gives me remarkable retention. Can't wait to see what 2012 brings! ;)

I learned that my hair is an attitudinal heifer, that hates repeating itself. It's only gonna tell me 1 time it doesn't like some thing, and if I keep pushing it, it will just fall right on out to teach me a lesson. So, no more bandwagon hopping for me!

:lachen:

I learned my hair likes henna and DC with heat is a requirement for me.

that my hair cant take being straight more than once a year:cry:

that my hair does not need moisture moisture moisture. it needs protein, protein, moisture

Okay, I'm jealous. You ladies know a lot more about your hair than I know about mine! Lol. I think 2012 will be my best year yet.

That my hair is not indestructible. I didn't get 6 inches of growth this year (maybe 3) because I have been lazy and not protective styling at night.

Before you guys yell at me for whining since I'm passed WL LOL I've been trying to get to hip length for a while (2 yrs) so this is annoying me.

I learned my hair is manageable without chemicals and that I have several patches of different hair types. I also learned I need to use more protein because I have fine strands.

Last thing, I learned my hair swirls in different direction randomly so in order to get coils I have to swirl the right way:spinning:

1)I need to limit direct heat.
2)My hair likes monthly dusting
3)Protein/moisture balance is very important
4)The importance of a healthy clean scalp. I started using ACV rinses on my scalp periodically and typically shampoo twice a week.
4)I can not go extended periods without detangling. My hair likes being groomed. Just not overly groomed (like from straightening)

My hair does not like to be overdosed with protein.

Natural oils are best for me- coconut, jojoba, grapeseed, castor.

Steam treatments probably are not for me- tends to dry my ends out.

Sulfate-free, and protein- free products are my friends.

It likes moisture on a daily basis.

Trimming every 4-6 weeks is best for me.

Expensive products are not the best products.

Making my own hair products to use are best.

I learned that:

  • My hair needs more protein than I've been giving it.
  • Coarse is not synonymous with kinky.
  • You can do several good things for your hair, only to negate all that by letting yourself get lazy.

I learned that my hair likes to be left alone and it loves moisture..scurl or conditioner..

And i have learned that my natural hair texture(newgrowth) is beautiful which is why I'm transitioning.

I learned that I can actually not use direct heat for a very long time
My hair loves ORS replenishing pack as a deep conditioner
My hair loves ORS olive oil moisturizing lotion as a daily moisturizer

Dye is my friend. It helped open up my tight hair shaft to allow moisture in.

--Maintaining my pH balance via ACV is vital for my hair and scalp
--However be careful using ACV because too much is just as bad as not using any at all
--Moisturizing Conditioners are NOT my friend:ohwell:
--My hair likes oil-based moisturizers best:grin:
--My hair does better when I use shampoos/conditioners in rotation rather than having staples
--I only need to clarify every 4 weeks
--Natural products may not work for me and that's okay:perplexed
--My hair is growing/retaining even when I don't think it is.
--Be patient, consistent and thou shall see results

Most Important: when I do all these things, my hair can retain faster than I ever thought possible:yep:

2011 was a real growth year for me, I think 2012 will be my best year ever!!:yep:

No more keratin
Detangle with care
just because it cost more don't make it mo' betta!

In 2011 I learned that my hair is fine and that it truly loves and thrives with protein. Just about all of my products contain protein and I've done regular protein treatments. My hair has retained quite a bit of length and I'm looking forward to 2012. I know my hair now.
ditto Akemi, my hair loves, loves protein.
