I'm about to go to Riteaid, and I was wondering which multivitamin formula has made a difference for yall?
I'm sorry if dis has been asked before

I vote for GNC MegaWoman Vitamins without Iron.

They dissolve quickly in your stomach so that you are getting full benefit of the vitamin.

They are HUGE though...so if you have trouble swallowing big pills then my second choice would be Centrum Liquid.

Pookeylou, this may be a stupid question, but how do you know how fast the pills dissolve in your stomach?

I did the float/sink test with water when I was taking the Centrum multi-vitamin...that's how I REALLY knew the vitamins were "legit".

Natori,
I thought that the float/sink test was just for MSM? How does it work exactly?

[/ QUOTE ]

Well, it's for all vitamins except the "fat soluable" ones at least that's what I been told. I filled a glass of water and dropped one of the Centrum vitamins in it. It sunk and dissolved within seconds. Normally, if it doesn't dissolve in 20 minutes or less then it's either time-released or just "no good".

It is very expensive (49.99 for a box with a 30 month supply) but it is worth it, the Woman's Ultra Mega Beauty and Vitality Program. There are 30 individually packs of the following vitamins: ultra mega, MSM, Biotin-Cyseteine-Methione-Proline/all for hair skin and nail, Oat vantage and EFA for the heart and choleterol. if you get he GNC gold card you will get 20% off the purchase. you need to eat a full meal before taking all these vitamins though. i have mine after lunch.

Excellent question:

Some here are calling it the "float test" but I have always heard of it as the dissolve test.

Take a 12 oz. glass room tempreture water.
Add 1 tablespoon of Vinegar.
Stir.
Drop in your vitamine.
If it is not dissolved in less than 20 minutes...then it is simply passing through your digestive system without absorbtion.

My chiropractor/nutritionist told me about this when trying to get me to buy her vitamins. Once I finished her bottle ($50.00
shocked.gif
) I then took the empty bottle to GNC and matched it up with thiers. Megawoman was an exact match at half the cost.

Centrum (pills) did not pass this test for me. Maybe they have changed the formula since then...that was several years ago that I had those. I switched to the Centrum Liquid for a while because of that.

You will actually see evidence of the Megawoman vitamins in your urine. It will turn a bright yellow...which is the result of (I believe) if you body has absorbed enough B vitamin...then the excess is excreted through your urine.

Hmmm...thanks Pookeylou. I did a similar test on GNC's Green Vitamin (I don't remember the exact name), except I used pure vinegar and the only thing that happened was that the vinegar turned green from the coating on the vitamin. All the vitamins under the coating stayed in tact. I haven't tried the Women's Ultra Mega though.

I take Puritan Pride Green Source Multivit because I am bad and dont eat much veggies I stock pile when they are on sale
kind of expensive.

Interesting.

Not to knock your doctor, but I just don't understand how a spoonful of vinegar can ever simulate all the acids and the temperature of your stomach. It also seems like this wouldn't apply to time release vitamins, many of which have a coating that is supposed to dissolve slowly for the regular release program.

BTW, Coolygyal, I take Vitamin Shoppe Ultimate Woman, and I really like it
smile.gif

That's the thing, stomach acids don't necessarily "break" down vitamins which is why some people take digestive enzymes to aid in the break down of supplements and food. If a vitamin is not water soluable..it's not going to pass through your system like it should...that's the way it was explained to me.

My understanding was that usually only older or sickly people need to take digestive enzymes because their stomach acids are not as strong as those of a healthy/young person.

In either case, though, I'm sure that anyone's stomach acids are stronger than some vinegar. I'm definitely not a chemist, but the vinegar thing just doesn't seem very logical to me.
confused.gif

Maybe the vinegar thing isn't logical...but I know I have "trouble" digesting "regular" food sometimes and I'm far from old and I don't have any health problems; it's just that sometimes things don't digest like they should.

@ Miss Brown...she wasn't implying that stomach acid and vinegar are similar...just acidic. Stomach acids are certainly stronger than vinegar...and if vinegar can dissolve it...then your stomach should have no problem digesting it.

Pookeylou - I totally understand what you're saying. But the only way for the test to be accurate and useful is if one's stomach acid and vinegar are substantially similar in acidic level. If vinegar is not as strong as stomach acid, then just because a vit doesn't dissolve in vinegar doesn't mean that it won't dissolve in stomach acid.

You know, I wanted to mention that on the board but I didn't know if it was too gross or not. But I drink a lot of water and then when I started taking GNC UltraMega Woman I noticed that my urine turned bright yellow.

I respectfully disagree...A vitamin should dissolve in your stomach within 20 to 30 minutes of ingesting it. If it doesnt it is just passing through your system. So if a vitamin does not dissolve in water, or vinegar, or vinegar and water...within in 20 minutes, which are certainly LESS acidic than your stomach, then that is an excellent way of determining if the vitamin will dissolve or pass through a substantially more acidic stomach within a short period of time.

If water, or vinegar cant break it down...most likely your stomach is not going to break ALL of the vitamin down. If water and vinegar can break the vitamin down in a few minutes...your stomach should be able to do it just fine.

its does that too and I freak out and posted it on another board.......

Where do you buy this?

PL - Some vitamins are supposed to be time released over the ENTIRE day, in which case they would never be dissolved in 20 minutes.

This is simply a lesser-than-included thing. Of course any vitamin that is dissolved in the water will be absorbed by your body precisely because the vinegar/water is so much less acidic. The problem arises with vitamins that DON'T dissolve in the water.

My point is only that just because a vitamin doesn't dissolve in the water DOES NOT mean that your stomach acids (which are much stronger, and thus more capable of breaking down the vitamin) will not break the vitamin down.

I agree the hydrochloric acid found in your stomach is much more acidic than vinegar or water (ph for vinegar is about 5 while water is 7 hydrochloric acid has a ph of around 1/and or 2) so it seems as if the stomach will readily break it down rather than vinegar or water.
