Wearing a Half Wig as a Protective Style?

I've been doing this since last year and I really can't think of too many cons. I haven't had any breakage or anything whatsoever. All the pros have been mentioned. . .

I guess the only 2 cons I can think of are:

1- Depending on how and how often you wear it, if you're not careful you can place the comb too tight, causing breakage.
2- Depending on the style of the wig, you may have to flat iron or curl the front of your hair to make it match/blend with the other parts of the hair. I tend not to do this too often, but when I'm on vacation or am going a lot of "important" places I kind of have to.

Also, to avoid (2) you could put all your hair back in a bun, put the 1/2 wig over it (make SURE you don't put it on super tight, leave it looser in the front and back combs and just add bobby pins to the side to secure), and place a scarf/headband around where you put the wig. Does that make sense? It looks like you have all your hair back and just put a scarf on. This is how I usually do it during the week at work and leave a tad bit out for a side bang. (As of late, I bun 95% of the time with the 1/2 wig as well.)

Yes, I  :love4:  :love4: my half wigs!!!!

I can deep condition 3x per week, moisurize my hair thoroughly every night, and keep my hair from rubbing up against rough surfaces. Plus I adore the versatility. I can have reddish brown hair today, and jet black tonight, and go from straight to curly to waves... with zero manipulation!

I don't leave any of my hair out, and I'm super careful putting the combs in and taking them out. I have not had ANY breakage.

I wear a satin do-rag tied over my cornrows underneath my wigs and falls. Then I tie a scarf over the front and go on about my business.

Today I'm taking down my cornrows, DC-ing, and rebraiding my hair. I'm doing cornrows in front that only go back a few inches and end in bantu knots. I'll put my half-wig on right behind the bantus, and cover the rest of my cornrows with the wig. :yep:

I bought a half wig to protect my hair as it grew past my collar. The comb up top didn't bother me, but the one in the back seemed to dig into the back of my head. I started covering the hair underneath with a stocking cap and just resting the back comb on top of the cap. That works for a while until the combs tear the stocking. I am really thinking of just cutting those back combs out completely.

Do you have trouble w/these slipping off. How do you secure it since it's satin?

Ms Lala, I slip the satin cap over a plastic cap so that my hair is baggied underneath. Then, I slip on the wig. I don't use the back comb because the wig fits like a baseball cap only cuter!

When I do it right, the satin cap over the plastic one, protects my nape. When I don't do it right, I spend most of the day trying to adjust the caps to make sure that 1) my nape is covered by both caps, and 2) that you can't see the plastic cap I'm trying to hide. I do a pretty good job most of the time but when I don't get it right, it itches back there from the wig rubbing against unprotected hair.

Oh, and I make sure to grease the front comb with shea butter or vaseline before I put the wig on.

I wore a half-wig this past winter as a protective style. No cons to report, my hair thrived. I plan to do the same thing this fall/winter.

Tip:
  • do a rollerset to smooth your hair without heat to get a blendable silky and flat look to your hair to blend
  • try a natural looking halfsies so that you can do a braid or twist out with your hair and blend it in with the wig
  • just put all your hair under it and wear a head band over it. (I do this when I'm lazy but come to find out it helps putting less stress on the left out hair
  • I get those cheap spray on colors that wash out and spray it in a brush and while the wig is on, kind of brush the color from the left out hair into the wig. Tossle it and you can't tell where my hair color is compared to the wig. Works like a charm! Looks like strikes almost.
HTH
Thats wht I do and nothing more or less.

I recently started wearing half wigs and I LOVE IT!! I am pregnant and due in 5 days and it is the GREATEST thing for my hair right now. I braid my hair under it and have corn rows in the front. Prior to the half wig I got a sewn in weave... it itched sooo bad! and was hell to take out. With the half wig I can just come home take it off and relax! I LOVE IT!!
It saves me money, little manipulation on my natural hair, low maintenance, very convenient and looks nice!

I agree.

I've been wearing a half wig for almost 3 months now. I just make sure to take out the combs because they do cause breakage. I havent gotten any damage so far. I think my hair likes not being combed and manipulated on a daily basis.

I can wash, DC, moisturize a lot better than a weave. Plus they are so much cheaper ($20) and I can stay out the salon. I plan on sticking with this for a year.

ME TOO!! I am going to save myself over 100 dollars a month by not going to the salon and I believe this is healthier for my hair. I am going to stick to this for a year also especially since I have a little one on the way. I won't have time to get to the salon every week.

I love my falls (half wigs), I wear them during the winter because I don't perm during the winter months... So wearing them from like November to April works wonders for my hair... Although I do remove the combs in the back because they seem to thin my hair out back there so I just cut them out. So I guess that would be my con

How do you do this? Do you just pin it in after you take the combs out? I am starting to wear my wigs more often and I am concerned about this. Plus the top of my head gets a little sore from where the combs stick in so I am not wearing them more than 2 or 3 times a week.

^ you know that elastic thingy thats attached to the combs I cut that out. Once the combs are gone, I use hair clips so the wig can stay put. I'm going to start using bobby pins because I heard those are better.

anymore ladies have pics of their half wigs?? i'm curious about trying them as a protective style bec im a low maintainence kinda girl *wink*

Pros: I love the long hair affect, it's cheap, it can use it as a full hair since i'm sporting a twa

Cons: matts no matter if it's synethic or human, can get tiresome after a while, have to buy one every month, my real hair sweats easily with the wig on, combs attached will pull at your hair

These are probably not good pros and cons. I would love to get a full wig this month. I got a bad half-wig last month and it shows the track line so that anyone can tell off the back that I have a wig on. But that's $58 I'll never see again and it's human hair so I'm shock that it's matting but It does last longer than a synthetic.

I also switch up and wear my head bands or scarf in the front to give the hairline a break. I keep the temples hair and the back out on purpose since those are my weakest areas. I also mosturize my hair with shea butter and EVOO so it's still mosturize providing it some protection from the combs.

Plus, take it off as soon as you get home and don't wear it at home except on days when I go somewhere. This will give it a break and let it get some air.

I put pics of a couple of mine up:

Your edges are growing back. Great progress. I like the wigs too but I really liked the hair that you used in those second pictures. It looked nice on you.

I buy a new wig each month. It's only $20 so I dont mind. I just bought a I just bought a human hair half wig for 27.99 during the thanksgiving sale hairsisters had.

I used to go to the salon every week so that was $80 a month so I'm saving money.

I always take my wigs off as soon as I get in the house. If I'm not going out the wig is off.

And take out the combs. I always take the combs out and use pins instead.

*bumping* ;)

I really really REALLY want a half-wig, like NOW! I'm starting to resent bunning :ohwell:

I am so friggin' bored looking at myself with a bun.

Late 2008 and ALL of 2009 has been about postpartum shedding and trimming tangled damaged ends. Now I have a part of my nape that is clear from crazy breakage. So, I will definitely be using half wigs in 2010, while wearing cornrows underneath. I'm gonna try to track this journey of making a comeback with my damaged hair throughout 2010.

Loca, how has it been going?

HarlemHottie, your half wig is hawt!

I alternate weekly between wearing half wigs and braidouts because I've noticed that the comb in the back pulls my nape a little. That would be the only con for me. I never leave any hair out and I have an assortment of headbands and scarves to cover up the front. I have an album with some of my half wig looks if you care to check them out.

ETA: My profile pics are Jessica and Jewelry which are both made by Outre.

I am a newbie but I have been wearing half wigs as a protective style because of this board as well and I think it's what has helped me stop ssks and retain. I tried a bunch and hated that itchyness so I made my own using human hair and a weave cap. HTH (You ladies are so amazing and I am so excited to be finally posting.) Lurkers unite!

Have you tried to roller set then wrap or cross wrap the front at night ? Or I use the caruso If i flat iron it is once then i wrap and tie the scarf:grin:
