Wash less, retain more? MBL and beyond

   Um I didn't say you said anything...i just quoted your comment and bolded it because I agreed and thought it was funny/crazy how everyone can try the same thing and come out with multiple outcomes.:perplexed

I totally agree with you too. Sorry if it sounded defensive, I just wanted to clarify that I wasn't trying to say one way was better than the other and, exactly how you put it, people can either wash frequently or infrequently based on their lifestyle and still retain their growth and acheive their goals. Basically that there really is no rule to how often we have to wash our hair. That's all ;)

I'm at about waistlength and I conditioner wash 2-3 times a week depending on how hot it is and how much I'm working out. My scalp starts feeling itchy and dry close to a week, after about 4-5 days my hair looks dry, dull and crazy. My hair definitely loves water, but i only manipulate in the shower and shampoo once a month or so, so my hair doesn't seem to break off or dry out.
The only exception is when I straighten my hair, it takes so long I feel like I have to wear it at least a week to get my effort's worth  but my scalp starts feeling icky after a week, week and a half even if I'm not working out.

What works best really depends on the individual.
I really love the pic of the lovely black women in your signature. Is there a site to look at more of the same? Thank you, bonjour

I am no where near MBL but as my hair gets longer I totally get lazy with the co washing and just pull my hair back in a ponytail. Its taking longer and longer to dry, as well as more product that I have to use

A 22.5 oz bottle of VO5 extra body conditioner use to last a while now it last maybe 4 washes.

My sister (pic attached) washes her hair 2-3 weeks apart. I can't do that but it works for her

it lasts me 3 :look: and Im not even heavy handed. I had to cut down on co washing because I was spending a good 10-15 easily a week. so now I use the cheap ones to wash and rinse with and the elucence to leave in

I had to switch for using Hemp Hydrating conditioner for CW because of that. Now the HHC in only for when I'm washing to wear my hair down.

I'm BSL and I wash 1-2 times a week. I find the longer my hair gets the more I find it a bother to prepoo and wash.
girl. I don't look forward to wash day at all anymore. I know I am taking better care of my hair but it is time consuming as heck.

I know what you mean. I had a braided/bun style that I was wearing so that I wouldn't have to comb it everyday. But my LHCF said it looked kinda ok which to me meant not so ok. So I'm not wearing that anymore but I'm thinking about twists in a bun, that should last a week.:D

I'm glad you like my siggie pic, I saw it and thought it was too cute. I can't remember where exactly I found it, I was googling 19th century images of black women and found a number of nice pictures.

here are some sites with similar type pictures if you're interested:

I love old photography. I never found the specific pic I was looking for but I found some nice ones. This portrait with the women with the cool 'dos seemed appropriate for this board :) .

Dang...I was hoping you would say it was your great great aunts or something. Then we could get names and a little history or something but it really is a great pic.

Thanks for the links.

I guess this topic also shows that what works for some will not work for others......if I was to wash/cowash my fine hair everyday I would probably be bald :)

I know I would!!!

I'm a little over waist-length and I wash every 2 weeks. I've been doing that for years now, even before hair boards and I think that's what kept a good amount of hair on my head even when I had bad hair habits. I get a little more breakage and shedding than normal when I shampoo so that's why I choose not to do it so often and plus my hair dosen't need it because it's not dirty or flaking and it's very well moisturized. The low manipulation really helps out when you're trying to retain length. And no I don't do any of that co-wash or rinsing stuff in-between shampoo's.

When summer comes I will wash once a week but even this slight variation in my regimen seems to have it's affects on my hair.

I really thought those ladies were related to you. I can just imagine how long their hair was when let down. It reminds me of a pic of my grandmother and her girls.
