Wash and Go Ladies...

Do you find that you have less shrinkage when you use a gel?

Today I just used conditioner on my wash and go, no Fantasia gel. But it looks like my hair is shrinking up more. I thought about not using it anymore because I've been going through too much of it lately. But looking at my hair, idk if I want it shrunk up this much. It's not fully dry yet so IDK how it's going to look when it's dry.

ETA: I'm not having problems with curl definition. My curls are fine with just water but I don't want them to shrink up so much.

For the most part the prodcut does not determine how much shrinkage I have more than the method I use. Some products give me a little more shrinkage than others but it is rarely noticable.

If I want lots of shrinkage I will lightly apply the product just after I remove my hair from under the water flow in the shower. If I do not want much I will let a great deal of the water run from my hair for maybe 5 minutes and then rub the product down my hair with both hands.

Gel keeps my curls on point but I don't know what roll it plays in preventing shrinkage. I know you don't want to use too much gel in your hair. Have you tried shaking your hair after you put the product in? That really helps stretch my hair and offset some of the ridiculous shrinkage I get.

I have by no means mastered the wash n go, but I do know that when I use gel and mouse I have less shrinkage. I also constantly pull it down while it dries so that helps some too.

I don't really have enough hair to shake. :( It doesn't really move.

I get just the right shrinkage when I mix conditioner with evoo. My hair is bouncy, curls are beautiful, but not too curlie. I think I've finally perfected my wash n go.

Now, if I wanna a lil more curl definition I'll add a dab of BTZ noodlehead. :wink2:

My hair must be the coursest but anyway, i have a relaxer and still have defined waves in the back. Maybe I shouldn't post but i still do have a wave pattern.

I think you should trust your hair and just nix the gel but I know when my hair was natural my curls would be more defined but i used super shine gel in the clear container with a black top and the gel was pink.

My hair is pretty defined with just the water. I don't think it'll get any better than that. I just don't want as much shrinkage. :ohwell: Will a heavy conditioner work?

hmm maybe u are right, something heavy helps weigh it down so it hangs more. I get shrinkage but not as much as a lot of ppl. It still hangs to nearly my shoulders shrunken and its just past my shoulders when its straight. I use homemade curl pudding (see the hair recipe board) and carefree curl mainly.

Try Smooth n' shine curl activator gel it works wonders. No shrinkage and defined waves or curls...let me know if it works for you.

Nothing that I've tried thus far has stretched my hair out more, except twistouts. I have MAJOR shrinkage. I just pull as my hair dries, but that makes my hair frizz a whole bunch. :(

OT: Tetbelle, love the collage girl. :)

I was having shrinkage issues w/ my WnGs too. But Ive been using Humectress w/ ORS Carrot Oil Creme and a little BTZ curling creme at the end. Sounds like a lot of product but I think thats what helped 'Weigh' my hair down to avoid as much shrinkage. IT takes a bit longer to dry but I like the effect more.. HTH!

I have to agree with you bmore. If I don't use gel in my wash and goes I end up with an afro. Afro's look great on some but not on me. So wash and goes with no gel is a big no no.

nothing minimizes my shrinkage... heavier products make my hair less fluffly and "hang" more, but it's the same size and length (or lack thereof)

Sometimes I will put the blow dryer just at my roots and this will help a little with the shrinkage.

I have found that using gel BEFORE I rinse out my hair (or rinse out the conditioner) helps a bit with the maintaining a better shake and go. Nothing eliminates shrinkage though. When I do a shake and go, I know it's going to look short.

B'more I think you and I have very similar hair textures, and my hair shakes. Are you shaking when it's soaking wet? I put a towel over my face, bend slightly at the waist, and shake like a wet dog. It does add about an inch to my hair (which isn't much, but it's something).

You're right we do. I did it when my hair was wet but not soaking wet. It had already shrunk up some. I'll try it again the next time I wash. I'm putting some box braids in now. I'm finding that they hang better than my twists did. Thanks :)

gel and my hair dont agree at all

the only thing that changes the shinkage factor for me is the amount of product and when i apply it.

my problem is that my hair looses its volume so quickly with just a little product. and on my length thin hair doesnt look so great. if my hair was longer i wouldnt mind.

No I don't think a heavy conditioner will help. My hair gets the most shrinkage when I leave conditioner in it. It seems to me the more moisture I put into my hair the more shrinkage I get so conditioner is not a good idea if you are looking to nix shrinkage. How about smoothing your product through your hair while it is wet but not dripping. If you hair is not soaked then the maniputalion from putting the product in should stretch your hair a little.

Same here...not even gel makes my hair hang...nothing makes my hair hang except for twists and braids. When I do a wash n go, no matter what I put in my hair, it shrinks to high heavens. So I just embrace the shrinkage...no need fighting it because I'll just get more frustrated! :weird:

I just added pics to my Fotki, and as I was writing a description for one of the pictures I noticed something. I had less shrinkage on my freshly washed hair that hadn't been touched. And there was more shrinkage after styling. After I wash, I use one of those microfiber turbies, and it does kind of mat my hair down. That may contribute to all of my shrinkage. But if I stop using my turbies, how will I dry my hair???

The weight from the water was probably weighing your hair down. Mine shrinks up more as it dries too.
