I started another thread cause it was to important for us 3c/4a's to miss.

Ok, when I went to the Chinese Beauty supply I checked the consistency and it felt more like grease than a water-based moisturizer. I checked the ingredients and water was the first one. But to myself I'm thinking, "Why does this feel more like grease?"

So, I went to CVS and now I've found the reason. Those darn sneaky beauty supply store owners. they must've had their mango butter for atleast a year because with time and air it will become more condense and harden because the water is evaporating from it and the other oily ingredients are left.

The one from CVS felt more like a moisturizer and was not yellow like the one in the BSS, but white in color and it wasn't greasy or thick but felt like an actual moisturizer.

So, make sure you check the products before you buy them.

and CVS charged $7.16 while the BSS charged $5.99 but you get what you pay for.

I hope none of you bought the old, stale Mango Butter though.:(

Mine is yellow:perplexed. I just assumed it came that way. And it has started to harden, but I just rubbed it into my palms because I figured it just gets that way, like Shea Butter. Damn that BSS!!:swearing:

yeah, if it feels more like grease then it has started to harden. you got watch out for those BSS because they have expired relaxers and errrthang up in there.

just to think. someone comes home, puts a relaxer in only to have it not work fully. drives 5 miles to sally to buy a corrective relaxer and has to wait so many weeks to do that. all because they want to sell old products.

I notice BSS often have old packaging (after the company changes the packaging) and the products doesn't smell as fresh as they should. This one BSS near me,even has dust on the products!

CVS/Walgreens type stores seem to have the freshest products even though they cost more:cool: .

You made an excellent point. Ladies beware and always do a sniff test before you buy.

yeah, sniff and touch to see the consistency.:)

i thought i was the only one that scratched and sniffed . a friend warned me years ago about old relaxers. to always open them up to check for freshness. of course i don't sniff them though

good information I have to check next time for the freshness I never check before I just thought they were all the same.

thanks

I noticed this also when I saw mango butter at CVS. I didn't think to hard about it cause I didn't want to purchase it but maybe I will try it again...a fresh one.

It does turn yellow after a while. Especially if you leave the top off of it by accident. Then it doesn't work right anymore. I've thrown a few of them away. :look: I guess the air getting to it changes the consistency.

Just about anytime I buy something from an non-mainstream/chain BSS, I do a product check. A lot of those small BSS sell old stuff, unfortunately:nono:. I really try to stick to Sally's or some other chain drugstore or BSS (like Ulta) for my products.

ETA: The mango butter I purchased months ago was fresh, but I still didn't like it. I wound up giving it away on the Product Exchange Board.

This happened to me!!!! I was so disgusted w/ the product that Ive never bought it again! So when I saw so many ladies here use it, Ive been thinking about giving it another shot. But Ill be sure to check the consistancy before I buy.. yeesh!

that explains alot. I bouoght mine and I loved but then my friend got some, and when I saw the package I was like I think yours is different, and she didn't like it. I thought they had updated and the new formula was bad or something. :ohwell: Oh I'll have to have her try it again.

Yeah, old products aren't good. But, I got my sample straight from Elasta & it wasn't yellow or hard. The actual ingredients in the product are the problem.

I always check my mango butter to make sure it's fresh. A fresh jar should have a creamy pastel yellow color to it. Anything darker is a sign that the jar you purchased has been on the shelf for awhile.

That is crazy:mad: They knew that crap was old and they continue to sell it, not knowing what it could do to people's hair. I love mango butter and thank goodness that the ones that I have purchased have all been white and creamy, however if I had gotten an older one then I wouldn't have known because that was my first time purchasing it, now I know better! I will always make sure to check the products before I buy them.

Whoa, awesome observation!!

When I tried this a year ago, it had the texture of grease, and I didn't like it. Reading your post might make me buy it again--this time from a reputable store.

yes i do this too, but usually only when Im buying new products that Ive never tried. i like to see what it is first, but I will definately keep this in mind for ALL hair products from now on. I happened to leave my mango butter with the top off it yesterday all night and it dried out a little bit, but i dug my finger in and mixed it around and you cant even tell the difference lol.

Thanks for this post. I used to use mango butter exclusively, but it always felt like grease to me. I used to wonder why ppl here raved about it so much when I thought it was no different then the other hair palmades out there and it certainly didn't make my hair feel moisturized. After I used up my last jar, I never bought it again which, was disappointing because I use the entire Elasta QP line of products and love it. I may consider giving it another try.

Yeah, you have to be careful with ANYTHING that you buy from a BSS. I remember my sister was looking for some fade cream and the expiration date was back in 2001!!!

So who knows how long all those other products be sitting on the shelf.

I always opt to buy my hair products from grocery/retail stores.

I use Elasta QP mango butter EVERY day on my edges!

I've purchased most at the BSS, and some at Walmart..but mine has always been this creamy pastel yellow. Never white tho.....

however I have had that deep yellow and hard grease feel if I leave the top off by mistake.....I may have had some old mango butter.....:perplexed

anyway...I'll start buying it at CVS from now on! I didn't know that they carried it!!! And I've NEVER smelled my products..... I guess I better start doing that too! :ohwell:

good post!

your hair is so pretty in your avatar. ive been stalking any 4bs I come across to steal their hair secrets lol jk. but it looks really nice and straight and healthy. hopefully mine will get that way soon.

This is great information to have. I would extend the warning to Indian stores too. I have found Vatika oil that had an expiration date from 2002, and the guy had the nerve to tell me they had just received the shipment that week.

Actually, we should be cautious of any stores from which we buy our beauty/hair supplies.

and also remember this same rule at the corner store as well. i remember they had starbucks cappucino sitting in the fridge from 2006 and chips that had been there for months after expiring lol. ghetto azzes

Trust me, it don't EEEEVVVEN look like that on a daily basis!! I bun my hair errryday, and my edges be screamin out for some mango butter and a lil water to lay 'em down!! LOLOL!!!
I have a million pictures downloaded to my computer, but just haven't put an album together yet. But when I do---YOU'LL SEE what my hair REALLY looks like on a daily basis! LOL!!

My hair is flat ironed in that pic---and that was one of the few times since I joined this board, that I've used heat.
It only looked like that, because I went to the salon.... don't be fooled by the avatar! LOL!

But thanks girl!! :)

off topic:
I just ordered some qhemet biologics sample products since the heavy cream was mentioned in this thread. Imma give that product a try to see how it works!

my pj-ism is outta hand....lol

Thanks for posting this info. I was at my local BSS about to buy some mango butter. When I go there again I will check it out and let them know if it is old and expired.
