Which style do you believe helped you retain the most length?

Share your two strand twists or braids journeys.

Braids because, compared to twists, you can leave them for longer and wash them more times without them tangling up.once you do decide to take them down Detangling braids is much easier than detangling twists.

I would suggest visiting www.minibraidmethod.com There's some excellent info especially in the earlier posts about long term protective styling using braids. The lady who runs it used to be a member manter26 i believe

Ditto braids! I recently did my first set of braids that didn't have extension hair added in, and they still looked decent three weeks in. I'll definitely do them again!

Ooh Duchess007 your braids look really nice and healthy. I may think about doing these more often.

I personally am partial to yarn braids and twists on my own hair. Yarn braids give me lots of retention, keeps my hair very moisturized and I can keep them in for a month at a time. They're also really easy to style. Twists I normally do on my own hair and normally keep them bunned because I'm paranoid of my ends rubbing on my shirt. lol I think both of them help me retain. I prefer twists because they're easier and quicker to put in but I never really wear them down. Yarn braids take longer to put in and take down but also help retain length and I can keep them in longer. So yeah, I love them both! =)

braids. They are more durable. Twists are quicker and fuller but my hair tangles, sheds, and get frizzy withing a week even with no washing. Braids lock my hair into place, they endure multiple washes, treatments, moisturizing and styles. when i take them down it takes longer but my hair is in good health

I use braids.

Recently I was told by Komaza to stop doing them because they can cause mid shaft splits. However, when I went back to twists the ends of my hair end up tangling and I lose hair that way.

I prefer braids

Really? That's interesting. I have them but i always attributed it to handling my hair when wet in the past. Sumra Did you get the mechanism for the splitting.

Hmm llan

They can't say what it is for sure. Since I'm natural it would have to be combing, stretching whilst wet, or braiding tightly.

I used to braid my hair when wet so that might have been it! Also I went through a phase where I stretched my hair with oucheless bands on damp hair and that could have done it. Wish I knew all this sooner!

Can you see your MS splits by just looking. or did you get an analysis too?

They're very very obvious, you can see them just by looking. When they're were at their worst they looked like a curly wurly chocolate bar . They're limited to the last inch of my hair now but in the past it was a good 4-5 inches. they don't weaken it too significantly so i'm just slowly trimming the damage away. It means that my hair has stayed the same length for a while but i can see the difference in quality.

When i first started trying to grow my hair i did some awful stuff to it :nono:whilst it was wet and these are the result of overstretching wet hair. Combing, and bantu knotting where the worst culprits.
protein little and often, and handling my hair dry got rid of them. Can you see yours? Sumra

Twists. I typically do them on my own hair and they can last up to six weeks. I don't do anything groundbreakinglyg crazy just moisturize, and tie it up at night. My hair retained a lot of lenght over the summer by alternating between mini twists and loose twists.

ETA: My avatar is my most recent set of mini twists. Taken at around the 4 week mark.

In the past when I messed up my hair with heat I remember being able to see them really clearly in my shed hair. Some hairs had multiple/tree splits:nono:

This time around I couldn't see them so was quite disappointed when they told me that I have them:sad:. I think some were weak points that are heading that way.

I don't have the heart to cut my hair now, so I'm going to wait a bit longer till I'm at my goal and snip slowly then!

I'd say braids for all the reasons above and more. Twists on my hair would have to be redone more frequently, every 2-3 weeks as opposed to every 5-9 weeks with braids. But my hair tends to "travel" in twists. The shed hairs go loosey goosey and then when I get ready to take them out, the strands are exponentially more wrapped around one another. Braid sets stay put, leading to more durability, less aggravation, and fewer tangles.
HTHS! :-)
