if at all....I know that most probably don't use heat a lot but I was wondering because one of the main reasons that I am thinking of texlaxing is because I miss my rollersets. Doing them now would give me instant puffiness! So I would need to flat iron my roots and I was wondering if anyyone is doing this with great success??

I flat iron about once every 2-3 months. I only really do it for a little change from the normal, and for a length check. I don't know if the roller set would work, but I have been aching to try it. I think if you were willing to sit under the dryer the whole time you might be successful. I know what I do sometimes is blowout my hair and flat irona nd then do a bantu knot out, if it's not to humid and I leave it in over night I havenice waves when I take them out, I have also done this with pin curls and had a nice effect. Then I just touch up the parts that get smooshed during the night with a small barrell curling iron.
It's more work, but you could always pay someone else to do it ;). That's what i think i'm going to do with my hair for my b-day:D.

Thanks Buttafly....I believe that I should be okay in the winter months with the rollerset....but I don't want to use chemicals for the fear of my hair vs. them in the summer months when I am swimming....not a pretty site and I love the water...I am going to have to figure something out...

You can rollerset as a natural. I know BublnBrnSuga(sp?), PoohBear and CaliGirl have done it. CaliGirl and Bubln went to a salon. PoohBear had her mom do hers. I don't think she sat under the dryer either. I've only had my hair flat ironed once since I've been natural and went to the salon. I also got a trim. I don't plan to flat iron much. Maybe just once every so often to check my length.

When I'm in the mood... I flat iron on average--every other week or once a month.

And have you noticed any damage to your hair from doing it that frequent?

Bmoreflyygirl~ Thanks I will check out their fotki's...I know you are able to do it but I am worried/concerned about the time that it will last. I know my hair and know that I sweat in my hair alot and moisture causes it to revert at the root, so when people say its looks full and nice to me its poofy and looks like crap. The next day, if that, I am ready to take it down.

Yeah, I understand. I sweat a lot myself. When I got my hair flat ironed it stayed until I washed it. Almost 3 weeks. I was just itching to wash by then. As long as I kept it wrapped and put a shower cap on when I was showering it was fine.

During the early months of my transition I used to do my rollersets, sit under the dryer then lightly flat-iron my roots. It worked pretty well and wasn't puffy.

I don't use heat now and haven't since 7/2005 but if you want a sleek rollerset, I'm sure you can go to the salon or do it yourself and flat-iron your roots. You will probably only have to touch-up with the flat iron once a week.

Thanks Bmore!!!! I dont want to texlax on a phase whim when I have done great thus far but I hate having poofy hair as well. So when I wear a roller set might just have to flat iron those roots.

Cupcake, I definitely wouldn't flat iron more than once a week and from what I am thinking, I would probably only do a roller set once a month if that becaue I know its going to take more work and sometimes I get hair lazy...lol

I'm averaging about once a month too.

i never iron it to death though and after a couple days i start seeing waves appearing - which is cool with me.

No heat damage. No loss of natural curl/texture. I deep condition well and use a good flatiron. IMO using quality ceramic and/or ionic appliances greatly reduces my chances of heat damage when used properly.

chocokitty~ your hair is gorgeous flat ironed or natural! This week I am thinking of adding coconut milk to my deep conditioner. I have heard so many good things about coconut milk that I want try it out.

I plan on flat ironing my hair in August for a trim (5 months after BC).

After that I don't think I will do it more than once every 4 months. Therfore only 3 times a year.

Thank you! I hope the coconut milk helps you. It really makes a difference in my hair. :)

I only straighten my hair about 3-4 times a year, I use the Maxiglide. My hair stays reasonable straight for about 2 weeks before I have to wash it and I usually work out about everyday. And so far my hair has reverted back as soon as I shampoo it.

I flat iron with my Maxiglide once a month and I always use the lowest setting, 1-3. My roots don't get straight as the rest of my hair, which is fine with me. When i go to the gym my roots become more defined due to the sweat. But the rest of my hair is still straight because I wear it up. I try not to wash my hair unless my scalp is really irritated.

My friends are natural and only really straighten in the winter time when they do not want to go outside with wet head.
