I want to transition so much but the one thing that's holding me back is styling! I'm 19 and in college so I need something that still looks cute and isn't too matronly looking... I don't like braids and cornrows either and I would love to rollerset but I'm not very good at it :nono: will someone please please please help me?

I do braidouts....I wash and condition, then apply my leave in and a sealer on top (varies from day to day what I use) and then braid in 6-7 box braids, apply pure shea butter to my ends, and roll with large perm rods+end paper. Since it's cooler, sometimes I'll sit under the dryer for a few minutes to dry the roots and some of the braids and then let air dry the rest of the way overnight.

I am 8.5 months post and my hair is BTW APL and BSL, so it comes out great.

I also wear my hair straight, with a rollerset (roots flat ironed), but you don't like to rollerset.

ETA: Pic + The braidout works best for my hair: less, work, the roots blend in best and it lasts for about 4-5 days..... Day 2-3 are the best bc it is fuller without being uncontrolled or frizzy. Day 6-9 I usually do a low/side bun or a top knot. They both look cute with the texture. I am washing about once every 9-10 days on average now that it's cooler. Once a week works better for me in the warmer months

I'm going to try this. I am 18 weeks post and transitioning. Thanks for the tip!

Welcome- Forgot to add that for the two braids in the front, I do more like big cornrows rathjer than box braids bc I like to have the same texture start at the root, vs where it would start for a box braid. I hope that made sense...

I wear half wigs. They are 20 bucks. I keep them for two weeks then throw away. I braid my hair underneath and just leave a front part out. Easy breezy!

When i was transitioning i wore---sew-in weaves full head no hair out, braids(medium mircro sized and wigs) .

Now im rocking a 3/4 wig. It looks like a natural curly hair. I think i have a picture in my album.

thinkpinkprincess - curlynikki has a bomb high bun style that i just tried yesterday. now my hair is nowhere near as full and long as hers but it still came out the bomb. check it out on her website: curlynikki.com (it's in the tutorial secton.) i may try her twist and curl style next. i'm loving the high bun! i'm about 13 or 14 weeks post and it's getting tough so i'm interested in the responses as well - great question. good luck!!

Kinky twists.... been at it since May 08... I love 'em... I've rocked my 'twa' a few times during my 2 wk breaks...im really trying to get enough inches so that I can get a "silkner" treatment done...

I've been doing phony ponies, half wigs, braid outs, twist outs, and I recently purchased a synthetic lace front wig for about $45. At home I condition, condition, moisturize, moisturize, and seal. Laying my edges down is simple as some vaseline (it's actually a mixture of oils and beeswax) and honey.

As a college student, 21, I say if braid outs don't work, or twist outs, I say keep it straight. BUT protect your hair and don't damage it with too much heat. I cut my hair short like Keyshia Cole / Rihanna to get rid of most of my relaxed hair, and I go to art school so I can pull off many styles that might be risk taking because of the school I go to and the city I live in (atl) I say go for what works for you!!!

I keep mines straight.

I want to try these, but none ever match my hair color :nono:. Ever. I could buy a human one and use a rinse to color it, but is it really worth it? I've been seriously contemplating box braids w/extensions or something but once again, hard time finding hair that matches and those braids would have to be close to TBL to protect my ends and that just sounds heavy. I just don't like to fool with taking them down, and no one around here will braid my hair for me claiming it's too long. WTH? Money is money...
