Towel-dry before applying conditioner?

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I always always towel-dried my hair before applying any conditioner. After all the raves about Herbal Essence Hello Hydration, I tried it but my hair felt like straw afterwards; so I thought it just doesn't work for me. But one day I applied it while my hair was still dripping wet and my hair came out sooooo soft and detangled. I couldn't believe it! I've been doing that ever since and my hair always comes out so soft. So my question is, have I been doing it wrong all these years by towel-drying my hair before applying conditioner? Do most of you ladies towel-dry first or just apply the conditioner to dripping wet hair?

Re: Towel dry before apply condioner?

I don't know which way is the "right" way but I've always applied my conditioner to a sopping wet head. Too lazy to get out the shower LOL

I know, that was always me too--too lazy to get out of the shower  , but I would still towel-dry first. I don't think I'll be doing that anymore, unless I'm going to DC.

I would squeee some of the water out, then add the conditioner. I do that cause I don't want all of the conditioner to run out with the water. But I do not towel dry it.

Wow, so maybe I have been on the wrong track. :look: It has always been so hard for me to get my hair soft at 5 wks post and beyond; but I washed my hair on Sun and conditioned with HH, and my hair came out unbelievably soft and detangled, even the new growth. And I only left the conditioner on for 5 mins (w/o towel drying of course).

I always towel dry, not because anyone recommended it or anything I just do it, I'm gonna try to do it while my hair is wet though.

I always towel dry before applying conditioner. I always figure that if you don't towel dry, then the conditioner cannot penetrate the hair because the hairshaft is already filled with water... and it can only coat the hair. And also if you don't toweldry, it's like you are diluting your conditioner because it's mixing with all of the excess water... But heck maybe i'm wrong....

I squeeze most of the water out first and I usually pat my hair dry very lightly with a towel. I think it helps the conditioner penetrate better.

I never rub my hair with a towel. The most I'll do is gently wrap a towel around my hair when it's soaking wet.

I always towel dry and get my hair as dry as I can before apply conditioner. I don't know if this is true but I have heard that the conditioner absorbs better when the hair is "damp" as opposed to being wet

This is exactly what I've always thought. All my life I've been towel-drying first because I believed this. I don't know-maybe it's the conditioner? Maybe some conditioners use the added water to conditioner the hair? I'm just guessing of course.

I guess that would make sense. But I don't know. Bc when people use curl defining products, it says to apply them to sopping wet hair so that you can "freeze" the way your hair looks wet while it dries with the product in. So wouldn't that mean the water is being locked into the hair by the product? If I towel dry, my curls look fuzzy. I do try and get some of the water out by squeezing. I can't stand drippies.

lol! pretty much :) I never towel dry my hair before or after a wash, but I'll try it b4 a conditioner and see if that makes a difference.

I also squeeze my hair because I never really towel-dry due to the damage it may cause. I have a Turbie Twist and Ill usually just wrap my head in that before I apply my conditioner. Either way I make sure the excess water is off my hair before I apply conditioner.

thats exactly my thinking......I always towel dry first. next time I wont towel dry just to see.

When I towel dry, I dont rub it or anything. I just squeeze the excess water out and then wrap the towel around my hair to so the towel will soak up some more water. By the time I add conditioner my hair is still pretty wet.
