Too many vitamins?

IMO that's not a lot of vitamins. There are many members on this board who use double or triple what you do. LOL

I dont think you overdoing it at all ,i take a lot more than you do and im fine ,all these vitamins does not only benefit your hair but also your whole health, there's an amount of vitamin you should take daily and food only cannot provide it to us so we are obligate to take them in forms of pills and oils .I think what you are taking are excellent ,i probably would increase the amount of Biotin though ,but if you dont want to 1000mcg is fine too.
Happy hair growing!!! ;)

when i do take a vitamin I usually only take one at a time, because how will you know what works and what doesn't if you're taking several. but that's just me.

Is anyone else getting slack from family members or a SO who thinks you're taking too many vitamins? My fiance thinks that I am overdosing myself on vitamins just to make my hair grow. This is what I take daily, 2 GNC Hair Skin and Nails, 1 Centrum MultiVitamin and 1000mcg of Biotin daily and he swears that I'm overdosing myself. He just doesn't get it, it's not about having long hair, I just want full healthy hair.

Don't listen to them. Do what's best for you. When you reach your goal, I bet you no one going to say anything after that. I think it would be a problem when you become dependent on the vitamins and just don't eat because you use them as a supplement. :)

I don't think you're taking too many supplements; I'm taking far more than that at the moment.

You don't really have to let your fiancé know what you take either - it's like going to the gynecologist - men are best left in the dark about certain subjects.

I dont think I'm taking too many either in comparison to what others are taking. I've been wanting to up my Biotin but didn't want to hear any "stuff" from anyone but I'm going to take a higher dosage of Biotin and no one will ever know...lol

It sometimes helps to not say why you're doing things. Last year I was on a diet, and explained my "lighter" eating habits as being for my health. ;) If I had said "diet" people would be like "have some ice cream; one scoop won't hurt." Friends and family are sometimes our worst enemies.

I think that the GNC Hair Skin and Nails and the Centrum may be a bit much as you may be doubling up on several key nutrients and that may not be good. Either or should be fine. I'd stick to the HSN though.

I don't think you're taking too many either. Some of us are taking like 6-7 pills or more a day :ohwell:. If you've taken them for a few days and you start to feel sick, then maybe cut back. Your body will let you know if you're overdosing on them!

From what I learned in my physiology lab, your body uses whatever vitamins/nutrients it needs and the rest is excreted as waste. So you may be flushing a good bit of it down the toilet.

If you think your taking to much it wouldnt hurt to research the amount your taking. Getting ill from a vitamin overdose can really make you ill. Alot of times you wont feel sick until its too late. Sometimes problems can be just drying lips, heart palpatations, discolored patches on skin, headaches, nausea, muscle, joint or bone pain. Unfortunately some have no symptoms and get a sudden onset of sickness by then its hospital time!

i used to take the gnc hair skin nails vitamin. that is a multivitamin by the way. they recommend that you take like 2 pills i think? not only is the amount of pills you are taking not worth all that money (because most other multivitamins only have 1 as the serving size & your still paying less), but you are probably flushing a lot of that down the tiolet. you are taking 2 multivitamins (gnc and the centrum) and that actually is A LOT of vit b intake! and then on top of that, you are taking biotin by itself. if you really think about it, you are exceeding the 100% of nutrients that your body needs, and the rest is just being excreted. while you aren't overdosing, you probably are wasting a lot of it..

To my knowledge (and I could be wrong) the only vitamins you that will do serious damage to your body is vitamin A and Iron.

Vitamin C can cause diarrhea and stomach upset but you have to take a WHOLE LOT! Unless you're sensitive, you could take 5-8 grams at a time and not have a problem. For some people who are sensitive (like me) beyond a certain point is just bad for the tummy. I take 5 grams to stop hives in their tracks.

i do believe some of the trace minerals like chromium can pose problems if you have any glucose issues.

Vitamin B (any of them) you just piss out what you don't need. B complex is also beneficial for hives.

I don't take biotin so really can't even advise about it. However, I don't think its dangerous at the levels your taking.

TBO, You don't sound like you're overdosing at all. And as long as you're not taking them together then there should be no issue of taking more than you should.

If you stagger your dose, say your hair and nail one at night, your multi in the morning, and biotin maybe a noon, then I can't see the problem. The fact that you've decided to take these for your hair. Well, as long as you grown you have to make the best choices for you.

If you're working out, you'll need more than the average person anyway. Thats also true for dieters. Plenty of studies out there that show that vitamins to help pick up the slack where a dieter or an athlete may be missing something that they aren't getting from food consumption.

Its hard to say what your body needs most of, which is why there's RDA's. This is what they THINK your body will be able to handle at any one time, though there are always exceptions to that.

As long as you use common sense, which it sounds like you are, then tell them folks to hush!

(if they saw my vitamin schedule they'd fall out! )

I've read this before and I agree, OP please be careful.

I use to take about 7 to 10 daily before I became preggie. I actually think this is what helped me get knocked up so fast:D

I'm only taking two now: prenatal and expecta omega3-for preggie moms

I want to do more liquid vitamins after I'm done expressing milk. I will probably just add the liquid vitamims to some juice.

my hubbie accused me of overdoing it. he saw me take two fish oil supplements, 1 Centrum Multi, and one biotin supplement. I guess seeing me ingest four pills at once seemed like a bit much to him.

I really don't know where I stand on taking lots of vitamins .. well I take a one a day womens multivitamin but I am trying to get what I need from the foods that I eat.

ITA!!!. It isn't the quanity per say, its what you take. Certain vitamins are fat soluble so that they get stored in excess in your body in fatty tissue. These include vitamin a. The only form of vitamin a that you can "overdose" on it the retinol palmate form. The beta carotene is the plant form which in high dosages at most makes your skin turn a little orange but you will have to eat a ton of carrots to get this effect. With things like b-vitamins, you wil just excrete the excess so no true worry there. Just because you take 4 pills does not mean you are over dosing. I take a tablespoon of flaxseed oil every day, a mineral complex, a multi-vitamin, borage oil, vitamin c, biotin, and silica. I am not no where near over dosing according to the rdas. You can't rely on those guidelines to give you an accurate measure of what you should be taking because most of those guidelines are just what you need to stay alive. Not neccesarily what you need for optimal health. Think about it. The same people who say "Oh you are overdosing" eat fast food and don't think about all the chemicals that it has and how they affect the body. The chemicals in one fast food meal do alot more damage to your body than a high intake of b-vitamins could. http://www.longhaircareforum.com/showthread.php?t=105394&highlight=vitamin+guide

Truth of the matter is that the OP should check with her doctor. We can advise all day long about how many vits are safe or unsafe but we know nothing about the OPs current health.

Taking to many vitamins can lead to liver disease. My uncle died of this. No matter what it is ,to much of a good thing is bad for you. You can even die of drinking too much water believe it or not. It's best to take only one type of vitamin. Try it out for a while and If that one doesn't work than just use another type. Don't let having healthy hair cloud your vision. There are far more important things in life than having healthy hair or long hair.It will grow all in due time as long as you take care of it. I only take 1 biotin tablet once a day and thats it. If you need more protein in your diet, try eating tuna. Bumble Bee is the brand with the highest amount of protein. It contains 29% of your daily value and you can find it at wal-mart. I also recently used motions CPR protein recunstructor conditionor. It did wonders on my hair. Im a 4b and my hair has never been so soft and strong. Hope this helped.

I think there is such a thing as too many vitamins. I was taking a one a day multi, a HSN vitamin, and about 3mg of biotin, 1 b-12, 1 zinc tablet and I have to tell you, I stayed in the bathroom all day and part of the night urinating. My body couldn't handle all of those vitamins. I have a slender/medium body frame. Maybe that has something to do with it. Not all bodies are the same. Some bodies can tolerate more than others. Nonetheless, I cut all the way back to just a one a day recently, and my kidneys are thanking me for it. :lachen: Just listen to you body.
