In my opinion, you just cant go by the # of pills being taken when determining whether or not you are overdosing. I always go by the % daily value (on the back of the vitamins) and research about whether or not too much of a particular vitamin can be toxic. An example would Vitamin C- there's almost never too much of that. The same applies (to my knowledge) to MSM and Silica.

Absolutely. As a matter of fact I found a vitamin toxicity chart. However, I have not found one for minerals or other supplements like MSM or Silica. This is a bit long, but informative. Hope it helps :)

  • Vitamin A (ie, retinol) -
    • Acute toxic dose is 25,000 IU/kg, and chronic toxic dose is 4000 IU/kg every day for 6-15 months.
    • Vitamin A is highly teratogenic in pregnancy, especially in the first 8 weeks with daily intake >10,000 IU; however, it is also a cofactor in night vision and bone growth.
  • Vitamin D (ie, cholecalciferol)
    • Acute toxic dose is not established, and chronic toxic dose is more than 50,000 IU/d in adults.
  • Vitamin E (ie, alpha-tocopherol)
    • The potentially toxic dose is more than 3000 IU/d for 7-9 weeks. Severe toxicity is very rare.
  • Vitamin K (ie, phytonadione)
    • A toxic dose amount is not established.
    • Vitamin K-3 (menadione) supplements have been banned by the FDA because of their high toxicity.
  • Vitamin B-1 (ie, thiamine)
    • Thiamin generally is nontoxic.
  • Vitamin B-2 (ie, riboflavin)
    • B-2 generally is nontoxic.
  • Vitamin B-3 (ie, niacin)
    • Toxic dose is more than 1000 mg/d.
  • Vitamin B-6 (ie, pyridoxine)
    • Over time, 300-500 mg/d may be neurotoxic. Acute toxic dose generally is not established.
  • Vitamin B-12 (ie, cyanocobalamin)
    • Toxic dose is not established.
  • Vitamin C (ie, ascorbic acid)
    • Acute toxic dose is not determined.
  • Folic acid
    • Toxic dose is not established. Folic acid is generally nontoxic. Intakes more than 5000 mcg/d mask pernicious anemia.

Actually, you can overdose on any vitamin.

Go by the %daily value. I think 300-800% DV pills are scary. Think about it, you're getting 3 or 8x the recommended daily dosage!

I take modest doses of Via E. I also take a multivitamin. I break up my intake over the week in order to prevent megadoses.

You also have to consider the amount of those viatmins and minerals you are getting in your food. I know most of our food is poor, but you still get some nutrients form it.

Unless you are on a serious diet or very sick, a multiviatmin is enough for most people.

Many vitamins can be taken in "mega doses" for optimal health. The percent daily values are to show minimum requirements for basic health.

I highly recommend the book, Prescription for Nutritional Healing, 3rd ed. (Paperback) by Phyllis Balch & James Balch. It is a great resource on the use of vitamins, amino acids, herbs and other supplements to optimize health and even heal some basic conditions without prescription medication or to complement medical treatment. It also explains which vitamins can be over used and which can not and it lets you know the maximum quantity to take safely. It is only around $16.

You are welcome CAPlush. I value the information in it so much that I have even bought it for gifts for my family and friends.

You also need to consider whether the vitamin is fat or water soluble.
Basically what Tracy said. The only real danger in overdosing are with Fat Soluble vitamins which are A, D, E and K.

This is great advice and I second that. I have been taking supplements for at least 12 or more years, but for overall/optimal health as well as for health issues that may crop up. I am very much into natural/alternative/complementary approaches to health and healthcare. I research each and every supplement exhaustively before I add to my regimen. I encourage my friends and family to do the same.

Keep in mind that the drv, the daily recommended value, is only what we need to stay alive. If you want the theraputic effects of some vitamins you have to up the dose. The book the other ladies recommended it GREAT!! and it explains this well.

I am taking 7 once a day and 6 twice a day including MSM powder. I have been doing this for the past few months. I am getting tired of taking so many and wish I could take just one pill:ohwell:

I just bought the new edition of that book the other day. I was going to mention it but you beat me too it:cool: ot:your hair looks so lush:)

Also try The Complete Idiots Guide to Vitamins and Minerals. It breaks everything down excellently. And going to the Dr. and asking will clear everything up-sometimes. I asked my GP and he was like "uhhhhh. I don't know."

Well, you know what they say about great minds thinking alike, Gymfreak. ;) It is a wonderful book, isn't it.

And, thank you for the hair compliment.

EXACTLY! Even then it is based on you having a PERFECT diet, perfect water, no polution, no family history of disease...basically it's based on if you and everything around you is perfect and last I checked we're not in Heaven yet:look: The %DV are a total joke!

As far as MSM. MSM is the 4th most prominent mineral in your body. Your body is starving for minerals I guarantee it simple because our soils have no nutrient value in them. As a direct result our fruits, veggies, breads and meats (which eat the grass and veggies with low mineral content) are at best empty calories and fiber.

Your body needs minerals more than it needs vitamins (it cannot utilize the vitamins without the minerals) and most people are not getting them. IMO it would be very hard to OD on vitamins.

What trips me out is people are so scary when it comes to vitamins, but if the doc says "Here take this pill, it'll get rid of your acne but probably destroy your liver in the process," or "Here, take this pill, it'll get rid of your depression, but you'll lose your sex drive and your husband will want to divorce you, you'll have pain urinating, and in some cases DEATH has been a side effect," and people are all over it like willing drones...:ohwell: Kinda passionate about this one guys, may bad!:lachen:

SOOOOOOO True. My mother hates pills but due to her high blood pressure and such, she has to take high blood pressure medication and pain medicine for her back. I got her on the south beach diet and taking just a multi and additional calcium, she doesn't have to take it anymore and she has lost nearly 30lbs. My thing is prescription medication is expensive and I rather start popping a couple of things now that can cost just a couple of cents a day to help avoid having a pharmacy bill for a couple of hundred dollars a month when I get older. Prevention is the key and a proper balance of vitamins and minerals plays a HUGE part.

another good book is "the new encyclopedia of vitamins, minerals supplements, & herbs" by nicola reavley.

I currently take MSM (1 pill, 1500mg), Biotin (1 pill, 1000mg), Liquid Vitamin B (vegetarian reasons), Spirulina (2 pills, vegetarian reasons) and a prescribed Vitamin D super dose (50,000iu once a week, was very low for a while in vitamin d)

It's actually not about how many vitamins you take, it's about what's in them that you are taking. You need to read about recommended dosages and go from there. For example, I think the maximum amount of Vitaman A is like 5000 IUs so I wouldn't take a Vitamin with 5000 IUs of Vitamin A and then another pill with 3000 IUs of Vitamin A. I'd be asking for it! Just do your research and read the labels.
