"Too Long" is there any such thing?

I agree. There's such a thing as being so long it's not cute, just like you can be too tall, it's possible to have hair that's too long and it starts to look mormonish. It different for each person and hairtype, but for me it's around mid back. My goal right now is thickness and shine. I wouldn't want my hair any longer than elbow length which is 3" past mid back for me. Waist length hair just isn't for me.

I don't want my hair any longer than APL. Its hard to maintain hair after a certain point, so i can understand not wanting super long hair.

That's up to the individual. If you feel its getting in the way of things, it just isn't healthy anymore, or you just want a change then I suppose its too long. I'm not set on having any particular length down the road. I'm in growout now and coming along very well but if I get tired of it I have no problem cutting it.

When I first joined LHCF, I was almost APL. My goal was BSL. Now that I am BSL, I have evaluated my goals. My goal is MBL and that is it!!! After I reach MBL, I am just going to concentrate on maintaining health of my hair.

When I first joined, my goal was BSL. As I am getting closer to that, now I am considering midback. We will see what I want after my first goal. I do think that too long just depends on the individual.

Although I believe it's fun to see how long my hair can get, length has never been a priority to me (just healthy hair) and at every stage of my growth progress I've been very happy with my hair. :)

I always say just do you. Everyone has their own preferences and when people try to impose them on others, it's because they are not happy with their own hair or with themselves.

BTW, I did see something interesting recently on "What Not To Wear". There was a woman on the show with what appeared to be tailbone-length, type 2 a/b hair which looked very pretty and healthy. The hairstylist, Nick, pointed to a spot just where her breasts started and said hair should not be longer than this point because it no longer looks stylish with outfits (Stacey on the show wears her hair that long usually, sometimes covering her breasts). Nick wanted to cut the woman's hair to what looked like mid-back but the woman firmly said NO and he unhappily honored that, leaving her hair alone completely.

I think there is such a thing as too long, but it varies depending on the person, as evidenced in this thread. The last thing I think about is my hair getting too long! But I guess when I get to classic length (when wet) I will probably maintain it there.

I like Nick and most of the time I think he does great work. But sometimes I wonder if he they tell him to cut and color everyone's hair as standard practice or if that's his personal choice. Apparently no one on the show has the correct length or color .

The only hairstyle I thought he totally messed up was when a woman with natural chin length hair came in and he cut it into this weird squarish shape. I thought it looked way better before. But the woman to her credit didn't flip out and handled the change well.

My friend, who was staying with me for a few days, noticed the way I treated my hair, all the hair care products, and that my hair was longer than it used to be when we worked together and (of course) I went into my Hair Speech.

"So you're just gonna let it grow uh" when I said I didn't want it any longer than mid-back, she looked at me like I had two heads. "What do you mean, no longer than mid-back, if we can grow it - we just ought to grow it" I said that longer than that would be too long for me. A lively discussion followed.

I don't want hair any longer than mid-back. Does anyone else think that's stange? Of course I could change my mind when I get there but right now that's what I think.

I feel the same way, I like my hair no longger than mid-back but if I go natural, I'd like to grow it longer.

It has been very interesting to see what everyone thinks.

Someone thought my friend was a hater, NOT TRUE. She has been encouraging and trying to get me to grow my hair longer because she thinks she can't grow her hair. (Living vicariously through me) She wants to see how long my hair will get. She is much older that me and truly believes many of the old myths. She listens to my hair speeches and smiles but she is convinced that HER hair won't grow so she continues bad practices. (Relaxing the full length of her hair each time, every four to six weeks, using Pink Oil moisturizer, and washing every 3 or 4 weeks)

I remember when I first found the board - my hair was kinda chewed up and I had a bleach disaster that was all my fault. It left me with 3 inches of hair all over my head. I said if I can get back to shoulder length that is thick and healthy, I'll be happy.

I accomplished that & was NOT HAPPY. I want MBL. I then started suffering from all kinda set backs. Lost progress but I still want MBL. So who is to say when I get there I may not want longer.

I did like the comment "I'll know its too long when I get there"

For me I think full APL is long, brastrap is real long, MBL is long enough and waist length = too long.

whoo, no disrespect to folks with tailbone length hair but I've been scarred for life from wanting hair that is anywhere near my ass.

One of my old roomates in college had hair that went to the bottom of her butt. I 'noticed' that sometimes when she came out of the bathroom her pants would have droplets of water, I suspect that when she went potty some of her ends would end up in the toilet water hence the spotting on her pants. :barf:

Everytime I see those rapunzel websites or the asian chicks with 9 thousand feet of hair, I just shudder at what is likely stuck on their ends. I know a lot of those ladies bun it up, but just think about if you have floor length hair or even better (worse) hair that drags behind you on the floor, what kind of crap it can pick up being worn loose for just 5 minutes.

I agree that he does great work and I admire his skills. :yep: I think it's his personal choice about cutting and coloring as a way of advertising his business. However, many times when a woman says she wants to keep her length, he'll snip and snip, hair flyin' everywhere and her hair is still long, sometimes looking like the same length! He knows how to give hair shape without cutting it all off and to really enhance a woman's features with their hair.

I'm glad he honors the wishes of women who tell him not to cut their hair though, that's a big plus. I thought it was interesting, as I mentioned in my previous post, that there was a particular length he felt was too long for style.

For me mid-back/bra strap is just about right. I don't know if I can handle any longer, it would be too long to manage for me.

I agree with others in that "too long" is really a personal decision. For me, "too long" would be anything more than midback. I feel I have the most styling options (that would look best on me) with BSL/MBL hair.

I'd love to get to waist length. After that, we'll see. I still have a few years to go though.

Personally nething longer than APL is too long. Again, this is personally. It seems like it would be too much to deal w/. Now when I get to APL I may change my mind. Perception is everything. :yep:

Personally, I think knee length would be too long for me. I am hoping to grow back to MBL by Dec 07. I think it would be cool to get to hip or TBL though.

Anything longer than midback would be "too long" for me personally, but I'm sure once I get there, I'll have 2nd thoughts.

That's exactly how I feel. But like everyone else said.....to each his own. You're the one that knows what's too long for you. :)

For a long time I wanted WSL hair. As my hair gets longer I find it difficult to style easy. Right now I'm between APL and BSL and it is a chore when your hair is exxxtra thick. Everytime a stylist see my hair I can see them groan, the way they handle my hair now I groan too. If it's so much drama to handle at this length, I can only imagine the drama it will be at WSL. This is why I've decided that MBL is more than enough for me, it's beautiful and wouldn't be a hassle to handle plus when people (stylists) see me hopefully they wouldn't be terrified.

I want natural hair that reaches APL unstretched...and that's that. Although, my hair looks like a mini afroand it currently reaches two inches above APL stretched, so that would be a lot of hair...but I know some natural sistas that want BSL unstretched...and that is just too much for me...

For me anything longer than MBL is too long. I'm short (5'4") so I think WL would be overpowering (I braided my hair to WL in high school and vividly remember getting my braids caught in a locker once :perplexed :look:)...But we'll see what happens when I get there.

ITA with everyone that said that "too long" is all relative.

Too long for me would be waist length or longer, but my goal is waist length (just to be sure ;) ).

Too each is own I think. Some might just want hair they can put in a pony and some might want long enough hair to sit on. Personally I want to grow my hair as long as I can. I will never cut my hair short again. Thats what wigs are for....haha:lol: But its always been a dream of mine to have long hair thats all mine so I will go the distance....

This is how I feel too!! I was wondering how my hair will look when it gets longer, since I am only 5'0 tall !!??

I love the length that I currenly havee right not, just above my bra strap. I don't my hair to be any longer so I will most likely maintain where I am right now. I don't think I could handle my hair being any longer.
