My friend, who was staying with me for a few days, noticed the way I treated my hair, all the hair care products, and that my hair was longer than it used to be when we worked together and (of course) I went into my Hair Speech.

"So you're just gonna let it grow uh" when I said I didn't want it any longer than mid-back, she looked at me like I had two heads. "What do you mean, no longer than mid-back, if we can grow it - we just ought to grow it" I said that longer than that would be too long for me. A lively discussion followed.

I don't want hair any longer than mid-back. Does anyone else think that's stange? Of course I could change my mind when I get there but right now that's what I think.

No... Honestly I don't want hair longer than APL. Everybody has their own definition of what too long is. To each her own.

I kinda feel the same way you do. I just want BSL and thats it. Period. I just feel like anthing longer would be too much to manipulate and since I rollerset often, I can just forget about the drying time. Id be under that dryer probably for almost 2 hrs. I dunno, though, maybe I'll change my mind when I do make BSL in a few months, but as of now thats my story and Im sticking with it!:D

ETA: Great thread, OP. Im eager to see people's responses.

I want the opportunity to find out what too long is. Looking at the thread with the woman from China who has hair about three feet longer than she is tall - yes, that might be too much. Otherwise, I want to keep going and find out - maybe I will stop at waist length and maybe I'll continue. Maybe I'll grow it to my toes and maybe not. I want to be able to have hair that is long, long, long and then make my decision. "Oh no, knee length was just too much me, I had to cut a foot so it is managable." Kind of like that.

I agree with you for now..I just want mid back, but things might change once I get there

ITA with what the other ladies are saying here. Everyone has their own definition of what is considered too long to them. I want my hair BSL to WL but not longer. I will probably end up keeping it BSL once I get there.

Too each is own I think. Some might just want hair they can put in a pony and some might want long enough hair to sit on. Personally I want to grow my hair as long as I can. I will never cut my hair short again. Thats what wigs are for....haha:lol: But its always been a dream of mine to have long hair thats all mine so I will go the distance....

I agree also, because ultimately you are the one that has to do it every day. For me waistlength is it because from doing my daughter's waistlength hair and growing up with and watching my aunts who also had waistlength hair , I know what to expect and how much time & care it requires. I'm ok with that. However I won't be natural, I'll be relaxed so I think it still may be easier for me.

After certain lengths my hair did become too much to handle. I felt like that when I reached shoulder length and had no idea how to style it anymore  But after a while, I got used to the length and I could make it work for me. But I could understand that some may be turned off by having to detangle and style waist length hair or longer.

For me personally, I don't want hair longer than knee length.

I've changed my final goal three times already though, so who knows. I think classic (bottom of the butt) will be a nice length. That's what I'm going for now.

I'm quite tall- personally anything longer than MBL on me would just be a bit too much. My hair is a bit hard to detangle...I can only imagine that this would become a longer process as my hair continues to grow.
But NO I dont think there is any such thing as too long. Depends upon the individual...

I have to find out myself what TOO long is,I'll let you know once I reach this point:)

Seven years. I've had a few setbacks since then.

Personally I want hip length hair, and I'm sure that goal will change once I get there. So I'm all for extra long hair.

I have a friend who's hair was about camellia's length before she cut it to waist, and her mom's hair hit's the back of her knees. Both of them keep their hair looking great. My friends gets offers to model her hair all the time. But then I've seen people with WL hair that looks :ohwell: . So I think it depends the upkeep.

BSL. When I talk about about BSL on me, I mean bottom of my brastrap on a "low-riding bra." Anything longer would be too much for me.

I have a long history of not taking care of my hair :( and I was BSL at one time but my hair was severly damaged. So I cut into a short bob. Then it grew to APL and I cut it again into the same short bob. Now I am determined to get my hair HEALTHY and LONG. So I'm close to APL again and with the things I've learned here I plan on taking it waist length :D If I can manage well there then possibly longer.

for me personally anything past hip length on myself would be too long. based on how i look.

thats both hip length straightened or hip length unstretched.
either one would be ideal. but if i were to somehow by the grace of god able to get to hip length unstretched i would never straighten my hair,, because it would just be way too much.

You can have whatever length you want. Knowing me I would have called her a hater. I can't deal with any friends that show any kind of hate anymore.

Mid-back length is the longest I want to grow my hair. for me, anything past that is just too much hair

When I first found LHCF, I was content on MBL hair,

THEN, as time went on, I was just like, heck, why not go longer. So then I thought WSL would be perfect for what I want.

SOO, to practice and get ready for my long flowing locks, I went out and bought a WSL wig. I LOOOVE it, BUT it made me realize that I want longer ;)

So NOW, I am aiming for TBL. But only on one condition. I have to retain my hairs natural thickness. I don't want long straggly, thin, limp hair.

I agree that its going to be hell maintanence wise, but I figure its worth the upkeep.

My goals for now are (and if they are unrealistic, please let me know):
  • Full BSL by OCT 1st.
  • MBL by FEB 1st
  • WSL JUL/AUG '08
  • TBL JAN '09
Im soo EXCITED

Anyway, who knows, maybe one day I'll decide what I really wanted was a pixie cut

This is exactly what I did!! Before I found the boards, I wanted to be mid back. Then I found the boards and decided on WL (I also used to wear WL braids) now I've changed to Hip Length. And if I still have my thickness, I'm sure when I get to HL I'll change again.
I'm just hair greedy

I want waistlength hair all over my head. My front sides and crown area grow like extra super duper slow. I think I'll be there in another year, but I miss the thickness of brastrap length hair, soo who knows what will happen. My neighbor told me I shouldn't let my hair grow any longer, but I think she was just hating, because the day before she told me this, she was complaining that her hair won't grow. Soo to answer your question I think waistlength is long enough for me. When I hit 30 I plan on getting a cute bob, maybe relaxing and coloring my hair a bronzed brown with gold highlites...who knows?:lachen:

This is exactly how I feel. I want long long hair. Because its something I have always wanted. I feel that I can manage, I want to manage it no matter how long it is. But I know I don't want it down to my butt, well past my butt. I will never ever cut my hair short again never. Even if it gets damage I will baby it first before I attempt to cut it all off. This is a great journey but after I complete it I don't think I want to do it again. I rather help someone else get there.

when i was chin length i wanted shoulder lenggh. when i got to shoulder length, i wanted arm pit lenght. when i was arm pit length, i wanted bra strap, and so on and so forth. now that i am bra strap (or mid-back, i still dont know), i want waist. i think i will never be satisifed, or maybe i just want to know how long i can grow it. until i reach my peak, i will continue to grow it.

Yeah too long is a personal decision.

I want my hair BSL curly, but when I get that length I can't picture myself ever straightening my hair because then my hair may be BSL or WL depending on my shrinkage and for me that is too long, too much hair for lil ol me
