Tired of wearing my hair pulled back!

For the most part, I am not even protective styling on purpose . . . it's just that I'm so busy and my hair is so thick that most days, I just throw it back into a ponytail or bun :( While this can protect my ends (well, the buns at least), it is murder on my edges :nono: And when I try to do rollersets (dry overnight) I experience a lot of breakage. I am not very good with heat (and don't want to get into a habit of using it) but I just feel like, stylistically speaking, there's not much I can do . . . I try wrapping but unless I just got a fresh perm, it just doesn't come out well.

I swear, I just cannot win.

Any tips or advice for someone with THICK, 4z-type hair that is inching ever so closely to APL?

THank you,

Glib

I would continue bunning for retention and add some pretty accessories for your buns, like ribbons, hair sticks, flowers etc.

Someone in the bunning thread stated if bunning is affecting your edges, you may be pulling too tight or tying your scarf too tight.

If you're just tired of buns, maybe you can try a braided or twisted updo for a while.

I'm having the same problem with transitioning. I can't stand this ponytail!

me tooo.. this transitioning thing is really getting to me...besides, if I don't tie down my helmet head.... it'll be a mess....

hmmm.. I'm really considering braids.... I'm really thinking about it.. I need a change.

Why don't you try twist outs or braid outs a few days per week. Maybe you won't get so bored if you switch it up every now and then. A few days out won't kill your end and your edges need a break.

I agree with all the posts. I am about 12wks post and I have learned for me buns are my friend. I do not pull tight and do very loose buns. Also youtube.com has been a great tutorial for me in how to change my styles with my buns (updo's). I already have thin edges so I moisturize day and night and I have no problems with my hair breaking. I have bought cute acessories from, Claires, Wal Mart, Target just to name a few.

Also for me I finger comb and only comb my hair on wash days now. Finger combing cause me to have very loose cute messy buns and I get alot of comps. on how good my buns look! I also bun @ night.:lick:

I used to do pincurls when I was relaxed. I put them in at night and have a cute look in the morning.

I dont pull my hair back tight anymore because it hurts my head and I dont slick down my edges with gel or anything because they are naturally thin and I do not want to loose the little bit god gave me lol. To wear my hair up I essentially do a twist out and then pull it back like a southern tease-ish bun... This allows my hair to be loose so it doesnt hurt. And the texture 4rm the twist out adds a little elegance to me and my hair still looks neat to me. yes it is still a updo but it adds a nice little change of pace. (I will try to post a pic) so you can see what I mean about the edges.

sorry so big. I dont know how to resize.

Also try twist outs for a change in style. I will wear flat twists for 4-5 days pulled back in a low bun and then rock the twist out for a day or so.

I am close to APL too but I dont know about you but i dont like the way my natural kinky twists hang yet but the look nice when I put them in an updo. Unforunately I dont have a pic to show this style

I agree....:yep:

^^^^that's what I was gonna say. Twistout buns are much sexier and more interesting :yep:

Very pretty

What are you using on your edges (to lay them down)?

Maybe something natural will help like aloe vera gel and it provides moisture. Using that with the scarf method should help those edges.

First off, this is the most I've posted in this forum in, like, 6 months :lachen:

You konw, I try to do pincurls and they always come out a mess . . . I wonder if I can find a youtube tutorial to help me learn how to do it better . . . hrm . . . .

Thanks!

Any suggestions for good stores/sites to find accessories? I know of Ulta, Claires, etc. but I'm always open to finding new haunts

Thank you!

I just go to the local BSS. Walgreens and CVS have cute accessories in the back of the store on the clearance shelves. IMO, some of the accessories at Claires and Ulta are overpriced.

Pretty pretty!! Not sure how that will work for me as I am super-relaxed but I am sure willing to try :yep: Thanks!

Those would be fine. I learned along time ago that cheaper accessories tend to break off my hair when putting them in or taking them out.

I would recommend making your own or ordering some quality pieces.

I just got an order in them firemountain gem and I plan to make a couple of them.

Beads on hair pins dress them up also. I won't post pictures in your thread but I will provide some links to my blog.

I actually don't use anything really . . . any particular product you suggest or will any aloe vera do?

And you know what? I make jewelry so I don't knwo why I never thoguht of making hair accessories. Duh!

Are there instructinos on your blog about making them or are there places on the web you'd recommend I go to get some ideas?

That point in bold is very important, if you are worry about your hair pulling due to being too tight, you should do it on wet hair and use gel to make it appear to "look tight" and over time it would loosen up

I was bored with my hair a while back and I started doing braidouts. I just braid at night and unbraid in the morning. Mist with water and use a dab (not too much) of moisturizing product before braiding. I did this style a lot when I was relaxed so give it a try. Also how about a bang for the front instead of pulling it all back although that may require scissors. Maybe you could do soft tendril bangs.

I was wondering beacause I know you make jewelry. Someone posted a video here. I'll be right back.

I'm not familiar with twistout buns . . . is the idea to plait your hair at night, unbraid it in the morning and then put it into a bun???

Yup. Or twist it at night.
I like to do bantu knots overnight, and then in the morning, I take them out and bun, which makes the bun more interesting because it gives it texture. And then I have layers, so some parts will stick out and be curly, so the bun looks less severe.

And for the edges, what's been working for me is conditioner and castor oil.
I don't like to tie my hair back tightly, but I like my front to be sleek, so I use conditioner (right now, I use either HE Break's Over or Aussie Moist) and put that on my edges and over the top. Then I put a little bit of castor oil over that, use a boar bristle brush to lightly smooth, and tie on my scarf. After about twenty minutes, I take off the scarf, and my edges are laid down for the rest of the day.

For relaxed hair this will work too. I have done this on pressed hair and had similar results. The results will just be sleeker looking.

The flat twist will provide the texture. oh! and you can alway tie down the flat twist with a silk scarf to give a smoother look on your edges
