Timeline Advice...

Hi all!!

I put in some kinky twists the Wednesday before Easter. I plan on wearing them for AT LEAST 10 weeks, but I"m aiming for 12. Every couple weeks, I am going to retwist the perimeter to keep it from looking too rough :yep:.

But here's my dilemna....
I will straighten some time the first week of August, since it was my benchmark (specifically August 5th, my graduation day) for my short term goal of BSL (which I am so not sure I will make, but I want to show off what I got by then anyway, LOL ).

Bu I know it will probably be best to give my hair a break between the twists and the heat. AND I will do somse serious moisturizing and protein treating before starightening, since you lovely ladies have taught me that strong, moisturized hair yields the best flat ironing result ( wish I'd known that ages ago...y'all woulda saved me some SERIOUS grief :lachen::lachen:).

So I'm really wondering if leaving the twists in that long is really feasible considering that little timeline. Should I take them out sooner?? (Like, the end of June, so that I will have like, 2 weeks to rest, 2 weeks of deep conditiong and and treatments and then flatiron??) I'm very unsure of how to proceed?? :spinning:

10 weeks in kinky twists is enough unless you have done this before and you know that your regimen works well with keeping twists in for longer. If you don't do this often I recommend taking them out at 10. After 10 weeks, it increases the probability of matting, dryness and tangles. And make sure you are keeping your ends moisturized even with the kinky twists in. Your hair will grow well but you moisturizing those ends will help you retain what you grow.

After the 10 weeks and you are sure your hair is healthy and the way you want it, you can always put it into a protective style to get you to your graduation date.

faithVA, thanks!!

Yeah, I've had twists before but NEVER have I kept them in beyond 3 to 4 weeks because I usually get anxious and miss my hair, LOL! I am dead set on keep them in at least 10 this times though, because I need the extra push to keep my hands out of my head and reach my goal AND it keeps me from buy ing products I don't need nor have the money for, LOL!

I moisturize and seal up to where my hair ends every other day, wash once a week, and will clarify every 3 or 4.

And yeah, I think I may take them out at 10, and then twist or cornrow MY hair under a week until grad day.

I don't know what your hair is like but be careful with all the washing. And I wouldn't clarify. That's just me. Your hair is confined to the twists and after 10 weeks you will have a lot of shed hair that you won't be able to remove before take down. So too much washing can lead to matting and extreme fuzziness. You may want to try cleansing your scalp with an antiseptic (witch hazel, sea breeze) 1 week and shampoo the next.

Like I said, I don't know your hair. Maybe your hair doesn't matt. I wouldn't clarify or wash so often. That's just me.

Yeah, never thought about that. I clarify because I use a topical growth aid mix on my scalp and I'm worried about it building up ay the base of the twists. Hmm...

And yes maam these 4a/b kinks will matt in a second! Lol.

I would advise using the antiseptic or something similar to clean your scalp. Rinse your scalp in between. And shampoo only when you need to. For 10 weeks this should keep your scalp clean enough. Thoroughly moisturize your hair every time you let water hit it.

Don't clarify or shampoo your hair the same day you take it down. Detangle thoroughly before any water touches your loose hair. And then prepoo and condition it. Moisturize it all week long. And then you can shampoo and clarify it the next week after you have your moisture levels in check.

You want to keep your hair moisturized above all else and keep drying steps to a minimum.

Regarding washing your braids, I am gonna provide an alternative point of view. I wash my braids weekly or bi-weekly or else I get scabs on my scalp. I also Condition and Deep condition my braids as if I am doing my own hair.

Also prior to getting the extensions put in I make sure that my braider puts some type of "grease" or "moisturizer" on my ends.

You can search the forum for the Crown and Glory technique and see how others benefitted from this technique or check out the website http://growafrohairlong.com/crownandglory.html.

Thanks for all the input. I will do some reading on it and see a bit more what others do and figure out what will work best.

Crown and Glory sounds good. Will look into it
