So when I started on this board, my hair looked something like this.
Don't worry. I was rockin' it like it was floor length. Man, slap some grease on it, blow dry it out, and I thought I looked gooooood
My hair was so unhealthy, I made the decision to go chemical free. I transitioned for 9.5 months.
I big chopped in January of 2007. My last relaxer was in April of 2006.
I quickly found out natural hair was a lot of work, but it was work I embraced. And, who couldn't love curls like this?
I learned to flat iron...
And braid...
And in March of 2008, I got accepted into a PhD program.
I knew my natural life probably wouldn't last much longer. It took a lot of work and time, something that was becoming less and less in my life. It was upsetting at first to consider relaxing, but I knew the reason I went natural to save my hair, and I wasn't about to lose everything I had worked so hard for.
So a week before Thanksgiving, I showed up to my hair dresser. Woman hadn't seen me in so long she forgot what I looked like
I came in looking something like this (one of my final natural pictures! )
And, she was stunned--absolutely stunned--at the results. OKay, no lie. So was I. So was everyone. I looked like a new person!
So here I am. After almost 2.5 years after my last relaxer...
Yes, let's compare, can we?
I'm a long way from my goal (midback length) but I am so thankful I found this board. I still hear all the time "well, you know, black hair only grows so much" but now I know differently. I can wear my hair down with confidence, because I know that it looks nice and not "tore up" as my mother would say I am proud of my hair, and it's inspired me to make other changes to my body to go along side of it.
What a blessing you all have been! My hair thanks you FOREVER!
