Okay I admit these are probably stupid questions but I need to know so please don't laugh :P

First, how much is too much to be charged for just having someone cornrow your hair? I have decided that since I can't do it myself I will wear those for the duration of the winter.

I've been quoted from 30$ to 60$. I don't want to get washed or anything at the shop beforehand. I told them I would come in with clean hair and I don't want anything fancy.

Would it maybe be easier to just find someone around the way to do it rather than going to a shop? I had a girl who braided my hair lst year but it seems like she's either moved or disappeared.

Also (it's been a really long time since anyone had their hands in my hair other than me) would it be rude to request that the braider not use whatever products they have in their shop? My hair has gotten pretty particular about what works and what just gives me horrible dandruff so I can bring my own.

And one last one, to keep the braids neat aside from sleeping with a scarf on is there anything else I should do?

Any tips would be fabulous!

Thanks.

The only thing I can help you with is price. $60 is too much for cornrows. Are you getting the ones with extensions? The most I'd pay for that is $30. Without extensions even less:look:

there is nothing wrong with telling your braider you dont want them using their products on your hair, i was lucky, my braider only charged me $10 and she did the best braids ever, with crazy designs and alicia keys braids and all and thats with weave but i always gave her a tip b/c she did an excellent job, so i would never pay more than $25 for braids

I wouldn't pay more than $50 for basic cornrows.

I'd say go to a shop; mainly to insure that you get the clean, neat look you want. I've let women who I thought could "do hair" up in my head and next thing you know when they mess it up I don't have the heart to tell them so.

Also (it's been a really long time since anyone had their hands in my hair other than me) would it be rude to request that the braider not use whatever products they have in their shop? Bring it up with them in the consultation call/visit. They should have no problem with it since it's saving them money. Not to mention, by allowing you to bring what your hair likes, it will insure easier styling and manageability for them.

And one last one, to keep the braids neat aside from sleeping with a scarf on is there anything else I should do?

I like sleeping in a skull cap to keep my twists neat and frizzless. I also find that the cap keeps the hair from bunching and if I place my hair the way I want it in the morning it will lay that way without me having to use clips or pins.

Any tips would be fabulous!

No problem. ^_^

Hmm.. every professional braider in my area charges $80 for cornrows with your natural hair. With extensions.. obviously more.

If you can find a friend or a friend of a friend who can braid very well, I'd go. They would charge less or nothing, depending on who it is. Several of my mother's friends' daughters can braid and they do a great job. It's just what you're comfortable with and making sure they're capable of giving you the look you want.

There's nothing wrong with telling them that you don't want the products they use. I personally never let them use oil sheen on my braids.

Thank you so much for the tips. Pretty much I want just regular cornrows without any extra extension hair (at least for now) no fancy designs or anything just yet.

I spoke with a lady this morning who was really helpful and is willing to do them for 35 which I think is fair considering the thickness of my hair and other prices I found locally. I will post a review of the shop after I go.

Thanks again you guys rock.
