I press my hair myself. I would love to be able to go to a salon sometimes and have my hair pampered; but I just don't trust hair stylist in my head anymore. Just thinking about the damage a mean-spirited, or jealous hairstylist could do with a hot comb or flat iron to my natural hair really frightens me!
I rarely flat iron, perhaps all of 3 times per year. I have had the same lady doing it since 2005. I send all my natural hair client's to her , when they want that straight look, including my family. Now on two separate occasions she has advised them to stop using my sulfur based products(said it was not good for the hair), and cut their hair when they only asked for a trim. That might have not been so bad except she cut my sister's already short hair 2 times within a 2 month period. Not trim " but cut "she charged her $15.00 for the cut" my sister who had gained 1 inch in the two month period went right back to where she was 2 months prior( called me she was next to tear). She did the same thing to my niece 1 week prior, who has awesome healthy hair. Now I have advised all my client's that they can see her at their own risk. As for me , my family and friends we will no longer be going to her (15 in people all) She has some liberty taking advantage of people this way, I dust my hair every 6 weeks , so when I see her she says nothing to me or my best friend (I do her trims )who "we go together ". It would seam she only does this when someone is alone, it sounds like intimidation. We would never achieve our hair goals if she kept this up.
My personal take is she is not doing as well as when I first met her, she feel we should be coming to see her more often , and all my family , friends, client's only go once every 2-3 months because I have taught them to care for their hair in between. They have all acquired length and not because of her. Also my hair is so much longer than my sisters, she charged me $40 to wash and blow dry, she charged my sister who has 3 inches of hair "or less now" $60 for wash blow dry and "unrequested cut ". All this means it's time to go, I''l do my own flat ironing and my sis just got a Chi. So I'm on the look out for a new person, who will do what I pay them to do not what they feel to do.
In one way Ir'm sad, because she stated off encouraging me to go natural, but I believe the times are getting harder for hair dressers who do not go with the flow, more and more people are taking charge/care of their hair. Which means less visits to the salon. Hope this help in your decision.
Sorry it was so long
