You Girls Had Me Burning My Hair Off! + Pics!

Okay, so all these pictures of ladies with freshly flat-ironed hair made me want to flat iron my hair like crazy. I kept telling myself, "Rosa, you're hair is a temple. Don't burn it down." (Lol, not really). I was really excited to try out the damp to dry method.

I couldn't stop telling people about it. Both my family and a friend thought I was crazy. My friend told me, "I will be laughing when you burn off all your hair." :lachen:

Well, I could not wait any longer. I conditioned with a protein/moisture deep conditioner for 10 minutes, dried with a t-shirt, and applied some crappy heat protectant (Got2b So Smooth Creme Straightener) and went to town.

I used my aunt's Remington Wet 2 Straightener.

The Results: It didn't get relaxer straight, nor do I have swang. And, I DO NOT CARE. My hair feels so luxurious now. The iron left me with texture! My hair feels soft, smooth, bouncy, and voluminous. Oh yeah!

What I will different next time:
-Kick the comb: the comb was worse than the heat for my hair. I had broken hair flying everywhere the minute the comb touched. I will make sure to do an oil rinse beforehand so I have no tangles or knots.

-Smaller sections: I only had 3 hours because I have class today, so I was in a hurry. I think the larger sections made it harder.

-Better heat protectant: I used Got2b because it was what I had. I think it weighed down my hair. I will be trying Fantasia IC or GVP Silk Remedy next time.

Okay, tl;dr. Look at the pics!

I tried it on my dd.:giggle: What can I say...she's my test doll.:look:

Anyway, it came out BEAUTIFUL. I didn't get close to her roots because of the steam, but the rest of her hair was silky, shiny, and soft. I put it in two ponytails and she kept shaking it.

I will definitely be doing it next time I straighten my hair.:yep:

man, i really want to try this. what are the critical points i need to remember if i try?

I would say to make sure your hair is damp, not wet. My hair was about 50% dry, and by the end it was 90% dry.

Use a good heat protectant and adjust the heat as needed (test it out on one section to see how much heat you need).

No more than two passes per section. If two passes aren't enough, you may have to adjust the heat level or do smaller sections at a time.

Good Luck!

I've tried it
love it!
I think the results look better than when my hair was relaxed

And I would definitely agree with that!

That is so adorable. I am glad she enjoyed it.

Your hair grew.:) I noticed that my hair did feel more moisturized when I flat iron my hair damp too.

I know! I am actually closer to full SL than I thought I was. Thanks. :)

Whenever I straighten, I do it this way. I usually wash and condition and let it air dry until it is slightly damp and then I flat iron. Sometimes I may add more water and moisturizer to the ends. It locks the moisture in quite nicely and I find that my hair looks even better a few days later.

*I have photos of damp straightening in my fotki.

Here are my results. I tried it back in October. I used my Wigo Onyx that I hate the results on dry hair, but I love the results it gives me on damp hair. I could never get my roots straight and my hair would revert in 24 hours. When I flat ironed on damp hair my hair didn't revert not one bit! The first two are my results on dry, blow dried hair. The last three are the flat iron results on damp hair.

ETA: Oh and I had a ton of SWING and SHINE! Loved it!

I love this method also. It leaves my hair straight and silky to the touch.
When I use to let it completely air dry and then attempted to flat iron it, It NEVER came out right. It still had a "crinkly" look to it.

LOL, Mine has a crinkly look now, but it's a different crinkly look. It feels silky and bouncy. The last time I flat ironed my hair, it felt dry and was so limp. This really does work!

Ooo, I take it back! My hair does have swang. LOL, I was just shaking my hair, and I could feel my hair flying around! I am having too much fun with my hair today.

Don't worry, if my hair was that thick and gorgeous I'd have a guinea pig too-no sense in messing up progress if you don't have to. She still young...it'll grow back before she can remember she ever lost it :lachen:

OP: Your hair look so incredibly thick

Thank ya much. I wasn't sure if my hair was thick or not until I actually flat ironed it.

What do you use for a moisturizer? I think I may try to moisturize my ends more next time.

WOW, what a difference it made! Gorgeous.

I did this back in the fall, October I think. 11 months post. Used T3 Wet to Dry Narrow flat iron on 90% air dried hair. SMB

oooh, i want to try this so bad but I'm scurred. got enough breakage as it is to take the risk...even the sizzle sound my hair makes when it's "wet" w/ heat protectant scares me. :ohwell:

Yeah, I think it would be best for you to wait. Try it when your hair is at a level of health that will allow you to take risks.

Thank you! I'm glad you feel me. I felt slightly guilty, but I got over it. :lachen: And like you said, she has years of hair growing ahead of her.:giggle:

I usually use whatever is on hand. A little Olive Oil, or Jojoba Oil, or a little of the Carol's Daughter Hair Butter. I guess it is pretty much sealing the ends like when we condition, except I am sealing before I flat iron.

I tried it tonight!!! My hair is swangin and feelin' good!
I cant post pigs because I misplaced my camera.
I flat ironed a 5 day old rollerset. It was starting to look crazy so I said why not give it a try! Stps:
1: sectioned off hair slightly parted to the side cuz I didn't want the split in half look.
2: split into 4 parts like this +
3: take a smaller section and spray it with water to make it DAMP.
4:put half a pea size amnt of NTM leave in
5: half a pea size amnt of Fantasia IC olive oil serum
6:4 bursts of Fantasia olive oil sheen into my hands
7: come through w/ wide tooth to distribute products
8: slowly flat iron from root to end to ensure smooth straightness.
9: Repeat steps 3-8 until complete
Whew that was alot! I just got so excited when I saw this thread.
Excitement finished.......:]

ETA: this girl in class asked if I got a perm because of how smooth my hair looked (especially my edges) compared to when it is dry flat ironed. I told her "No, I am transitioning". Then I realized that she didn't understand me so I corrected myself saying "I am going natural". She was like "Oooo ok."

I had good results too. I did this in December.

I was 6 weeks post, and my mother kept telling me about getting a relaxer in my hair and fast (for a frequent/recent natural, she was/is/has always been quick to holler about my NEEDING a relaxer and fast since about age 14), so I did this instead.

I will post the pictures from that night whenever I get around to blocking out my face, since I didn't take hair pictures.

I didn't take hair pictures that night. I also plan on doing this again within the next day or two, so I will post an update in the thread from that.

I tried today with my relaxer today. I did a relaxer with Silk Elements Lye with Shea Butter (pretty good) and I put my leavins which were (Influx 33) (Aphgoee Green Tea Reconstructor) (Silk Elements Styling Foam) and (Chi Silk Infusion) and I blow dried just a bit to speed up from wet to damp and I proceeded to flat iron with my ION Moisutre Solutions flat iron

this is my hair today (damp flat iron)

Way smoother and feels more moisturized than dry flat ironing...though I'm still doing the research about it but till then I will continue putting those leave ins which are heat protectants as well to just cover my self.

Great job, it looks beautiful.

And thanks to all of you for sharing how it went. I hope more people come in with responses. :)
