Have people that you talk to always ask you..."you have such nice hair, how come you always wear it up? Too many people that have long hair, wear their hair up...it's a waist of hair..."

What do you think of that?
I get so angry when people ask me this crap. Don't they get it? IT'S THE REASON WHY I HAVE LONG HAIR!! I wear it up all the time!! No wonder their hair doesn't get long, they do everything and anything with their hair, from curling irons everyday, to spray, to gel...anything they can get their hands on...they try to do every hairstyle that they can thing of, doing major damage in the process...and then they sit back and wonder....

It's the people that don't do anything with their hair, that has the longest hair. They don't do any elaborate hairstyle unless it's a special occasion, and they only wear their hair out like once every two months. All the rest of the days, it's up in a bun, or something else.

People should use their heads....

Sorry...just had to post my feelings...

Yeah, I used to always get, "Y do u always wear a ponytail? If I had ur hair (length) I'd wear it (blah blah) & i'd wear it (blah blah)...". Then they'd wonder y they didn't have any hair...they manipulated it tooo much!!!

I get that all the time from my co-workers. I wear my hair up in a ponytail everyday a work. And specifically one of my co-workers always wants me to wear my hair out. She's always saying, "you have long hair, you should wear it out".

Why do you always wear your hair in a bun?

Why don't you hardly wear your hair down?

Same two questions. Over and over.

I've also noticed that people react to me differently with my hair down.

I'm not even into intricate styles, but I'm tempted to wear my newfound corkscrew curls down a lot. It bugs me that my hair is too delicate to wear down often. I can't wear it down with sweaters, and I LOVE sweaters for the preppy layered look.

My type 1 girlfriends think nothing of chopping their hair during hot spring weather. It'll be long again by fall -- no supplements or fancy products or regime change necessary.

Color me jealous.

The question I always get is, "Why do you grow your hair long, if all you're going to do is pin it up? No one is going to see it (the length) anyway."

im curious to know how yall respond..
are these other black women who ask you this?

I always respond in a nice way. I just tell them the truth (about protective styles and such). I get asked this question by males and females of different races.

My mother used to say, " you have such beautiful thick hair and you wear it up all the time ... if I had hair like yours" .... blah blah blah.

She wears her hair down all the time, and it's short, dry brittle, hard and has a lot of breakage. I used to try and give her advice on how to take care of her hair, but she continued to blow dry and use the curling iron all the time.

ballet bun ....

I guess I'm pitiful because I just can't have long hair and not wear it out everyday...When my hair was long I wore it out everyday and it still grew well...Now my hair is close to long again (a lil shy of brastrap) and it's time to wear my hair out again! But then again I think my hair can take it since I'm a moisture freak and don't really use curling irons or blowdryers...

I just don't answer at all. It's usually black people that ask me this question. If you ask me more than once, then yu don't get an answer....they should be able to figure it out. I'm tired of explaining..

Someone should make a T-shirt that explains it all so that we can wear it on "Casual Friday" and the weekends. After a few wears, I think every ignorant person would get a chance to read it and thus quit asking "The MOST annoying question".

I agree. Back in the day I was always sporting ponytails, buns & updos and yes, my hair was long. Some people don't get that these styles protect your hair from the wear&tear of wearing it down. My husband especially!!!!!

I know it's annoying, but honestly, they just don't understand the concept that less = more. Now, I don't mind explaining, but if they ask me again, I do tend to get

I guess I'm the oddball because I wear my hair down in the braid out style everyday and have managed to grow my hair from shoulder length last year to about 2 inches from bra strap this year. I dont think you have to wear your hair up all of the time to help it grow. With me,as long as my hair gets plenty of moisture it grows whether up or down. The most annoying thing to me is that people stare at my hair before they even look at my face. My hair is very thick, jet black and medium long (almost bra strap)so I guess they're wondering "is that her hair or a weave?"

I love the "Is that a weave?" question. To me, it is a compliment. I was walking home 2 weeks ago, and this lady stopped me and asked me who did my hair (I was sporting it all out). I said, "I do my hair." She was like,

"Oh, okay. How much do you charge? Is that glued in or sewn in?"

Okay now. That's the thing that annoys me. I even had a girl feel around in my hair because she thought I was lying and had a weave. How come some people think that if you have long, healthy hair, it's a weave?

I feel you Karonica. I wish I could see it as a compliment but I work so hard at achieving my hairs health and length,a part of me would like to get credit for that by people knowing that it is real. I have never had anyone actually ask me if its fake but I can see that lingering curiosity by the way they look at me. On the other hand some people assume I'm mixed with indian and black or asian and black so they believe my hair is my own. Its funny though because the only reason I could think of why people confuse me with having some type of asian in my background is because of my slanted eyes......hehheehehe

People do treat you differently when you wear your hair down. I only get compliments from my white coworkers, the've never questioned whether or not it was mine. But the black ones are in two camps: either they like it and they tell you or they give you those weird looks and talk to your hairline instead of you.

I try to wear my hair down at least 2 work days out of the week. Some of the other days I try to wear it pinned up but not in bun. Since I don't have to use heat to do any of those things, I don't feel like it's damaging. I think it's important to "enjoy" our hair at whatever length it's at. I think that makes our goal length a lot less daunting because we're not always counting the days and inches until we can let our hair down. Moderation and moisture is the key.

I know someone who is just like this. No eye contact whatsoever.

Yep there is this girl at my workplace that does that too....lol. Its so funny but I have to admit that she does compliment me on my hair regularly. I have a feeling she wants to ask me what my regimen is because she always looks so curious when she compliments me. There is also another girl who works with me who has hair that is bra strap length and she wears hers in a bun all the time. Once every two weeks she will wear it out. She once told me that she doesnt like it out because its thin looking. I think her hair looks nice out but it looks like she put heavy grease in it and straightens it because it has no movement. She never compliments me on my hair but she stares at it constantly.

Has anyone ever had someone to get disappointed or even jealous when you told them that it was NOT a weave and they were thinking it was? Just curious.

lol...those jealous people seem so funny.I have never had hair past my neck so basically almost every black girl I know has longer hair than mine.Sometimes I feel bad...but never jealous tho.I think it is because I just could never see myself having hair even shoulder length so it is just something unattainable and it would just be ludicrous to be jealous.I always compliment others on their nice hair.I have to admit tho...I sometimes would ask why they don't wear it open more....cuz it looks soo nice when it is worn open...I guess u have to have short hair to understand..lol

well me personally i worked to hard to wear my hair up..i dont do the ponytail thing becuz my hairline doesnt like it..so its always out..i feel like if u know how to take care of your hair and do you regime your good with wearing it out..i seldomly wear a ponytail maybe once a month..i know for me my breakage came from my over-zealous use of heat..so its flowing 99% of the time...

I hate ponytails too (make my head look big) and my side layers always break loose from them to create long bangs. Ugh.

i agree and i disagree because i do think that the reason the hair is so long is because its always in a protective style but at the same time why grow it out so long to wear it up all the time u might as well just cut it really short and have even less maintenence. i personally switch it up all the time and my hair is still a good length about four inches past my shoulders. i can understand if someone just likes a bun but a lot (im not gonna say all) of women grow their hair just to have it long and flowing and when it gets there just to put it up is just kinda pointless but i guess everyone can style their hair however they want, thats just my opinion.

Well, I guess I better get ready for these comments soon. I took out one of my braids in the back (it was about to slip out anyway), detangled and combed it out. I washed my hair, conditioned and moisturzied my hair today and the unbraided hair is past my shoulders (the braid was right behind my ear) so I am very happy. The ends aren't dry or thin! I'm so happy!!!!

Anyway, some people always think that blacks can't have long hair, which is ridiculous. Doesn't anyone ever notice how the people who always tell you that grease and perms make your hair grow usually have the really dry, broken off hair covered up with gel? No offense to anyone who perms, but I do think it's possible for blacks to have healthy hair, whether it's permed or not.
