The hairstylist on "What not to Wear" gets on my nerves

Down with Nick! He and that razor need to go! I don't like his styles either. Most of the guests end up crying after he does their hair.

I think the thing is, most ppl go in not wanting to make any changes and already REALLY like themselves the way they are (messed up hair and funny clothes and all) So I think, just like the stylists, he tries to give them something that still looks like what they had BEFORE, but BETTER, basically polishing things instead of taking it to a whole new thing. Most people on the show are quite conservative, it seems (even though some wear crazy stuff) I don't know what they'd do with a crazy asymmetrical cut with high and lowlights and all. I think he tries to keep it simple but "polished" (which he says in his posh accent... he always says that's the goal) nothing extreme.

I think so too. :yep: After giving away ALL of their clothes and getting whole new looks, it may be a bit much to get whole new hair too. Also, it doesn't make too much sense to give someone something very different and send them home when they may not know how to take care of it or maintain it. Most of the time when Nick tells ppl that they need to cut some hair, I agree. Sometimes, I don't see a difference, but that's when people seem the happiest with the results.

I loved this method that he used. This is where I learned to do my chunky curls on wash n' go's. I think he called it a "curl set".

Oh Poka, what products do you use to do this? I really want to try it out but I don't know what to use. Any tips? TIA!!!

I believe Nick explained why he colors the hair. For the most part he uses a demi-permanent which isn't damaging to the hair but brings out the natural color a lot more. It doesn't require maintenance like high lights would, and gives that extra punch. The latin girl's hair was AMAZING! Her ends really needed to be trimmed, and he showed her a style that worked with her natural hair texture that didn't require blowing it out. I wouldn't necessarily call WNTW a makeover show per se. Yes the people come out looking completely different, but even with the clothes, Stacy and Clinton never try to change the individual style the person has, and Nick is the same way. And as far as Stacy's hair being long, it's GORGEOUS! The shine and bounce she has in her hair is amazing, and it fits her face.

I wish Carmindy would do something to her hair. She's a pretty woman, but the bleach has done a number on her tresses.

I'm not sure what the pros/cons are to razor cutting, however some of the best hair cuts I've had have been with the razor.

I think Nick does a great job with the hair cuts/styles he gives on the show. Most of the ladies come on the show with hair that definitely needs cutting and styling. The styles he provide seem to be everyday, doable styles that are easy to maintain. The only contestant I recall that left away with a not so good look was the white woman who with locks.....of course her hair was in such bad shape he didn't have many options.

I still cringe whenever I see him go near someone's hair. I always shout at the TV, DON'T LET HIM DO IT! He basically gives everyone the same cut. The other day he had a tantrum b/c the lady didn't want him to cut her hair off! :ohwell:

I somewhat agree and disagree. .

The whole point nof that show is to get a makeover. And for some people especially those that havelived with the same hairstyle all their lives or most of their lives its a good thing especially if they are in a professional career field. IMO it would make no sense to do updo's or any style that the pereseon couldn't replicate at home.

On the other hand. It seems to make that he really likes cutting women's hair to about shoulder length or shorter. I'm not an avid watcher of that show but only about 2-3 times have I seen him keep the woman's length and shape it. Most of the time its a hugee chop.

I'm not sure what the pros/cons are to razor cutting, however some of the best hair cuts I've had have been with the razor.

razors are used to create texture, remove bulk, and to help with movement.

If the stylist doesn't know what he/she is doing and why then you have disasterous results. Razors cannot be used on all hairt types especially coarser textured hair. .

Regardless of whether the stylist uses a razor or shear if they are not razor shar it can affect the look of the hair. The ends may appear frizzy and damaged. Think of it as cutting a piece of bread or meat with a dull knife your cut is not very clean (and you may sit there going back and forth with your knife) versus the use of a very sharp knife.

I have never seen Nick do a bad hair cut. I have seen him do hair in person and he and his team are fierce!! He cuts people's hair because they NEED it. People are acting like those people don't go in there looking a hot mess with split ends, torn up color, limp, no shape and fried died and laid to the side. Everyone's hair looks 100% healthier when they leave his chair. I also have seen him leave plenty of people's hair long esspeically the Black women. What kind of hairstylist would he be if he was more concerned about the length of hair rather than how healthy and flattering the cut is?

Woah, I'm surprised this thread is 2 pages. I thought it'd be on page 10 by now!
That's cool for the ladies who like Nick. I just don't. I was just watching an episode right now and there was a Latina girl with medium length curly hair and he cut about 3 inches off, and sent her out with the same hairstyle she came in with. I mean, he sends them off w/a neater style, but it is the same style. Where is the makeover? The most dramatic things I've seen him do (and keep in mind I haven't seen every epiode) was when he cut the girl w/the dreads hair off. And he did a poor job on that. He just cut her dreads and washed her hair and she had mostly short hair on top, two longer pieces on each side in the front which made no sense. He could've given her a cute pixie cut, but no, he just cut her dreads off.

And the "coloring"? And I put it in quotes, b/c I never see a difference. But if their hair is so damaged, like some posters said, then why put more damaging color to it? How does that help?

But while Nick is doing all of his coloring, he needs to hook Stacy up. I'm tired of seeing her skunk stripes, though I saw an episode today and her hair was shorter and black all over so maybe she finally colored it (though I dont know the sequence of the shows)

Her gray streak is genetic, she was born with it.

I hate to cut peoples hair. I love it when they want something other than a cut. I love to do different than the next. I want my styles to stand out. So when you walk down the street, people will know that you got your hair done by Mrs. Remilaku. I care about the health of someones hair. I also only use natural products. If a person is scissor happy and does not care about your hair don't go to them.

I really like Nick. I like that he does not always straighten curly hair. I also like the fact that he gives the ladies a clean, sophisticated look that is really practical for everyday life. In my opinion, the worst thing is getting a glamorous haircut that you can not maintain and ends up looking bad. Just my 2.5 cents :-)

All he does is tell the girls how bad their hair currently looks and how they ABSOLUTELY NEED to get it cut b/c it looks sooooo bad currently, then he proceeds to cut and color their hair, and then 90% of the time, they walk out with the same hairstyle, it is just 4 inches shorter . If you say you don't want your hair cut, he will insult you and tell you how bad it look, and how your ends are damaged, etc. I have never seen this man do up-dos, or set anyone's hair on rollers. Those are different styles too! Nope. If you have curly hair, he tells you how it needs to be cut and just drys it w/a diffuser and you go out the door w/shorter curly hair. If you had a long bob w/bangs, he cuts it, and you leave w/ a short bob w/bangs. And IMO the resulting styles are just bland and boring. It is not often I see a cut where I'm like "wow! What a makeover!"

I guess he irriates me b/c he is like that typical hairstylist who just wants to cut and when you resist, proceeds to insulting your hair to get his way :ohwell:

Oooh, that's funny! I don't own a t.v. which show is that? Is that the one with a woman (she has long black hair with a grey streak) and guy?

then write to the producer about your concerns or ask us to, as well, LOL.

either that, or stop watching.

life's too short to let PROGRAMMING get under your skin...the power button isn't far. (and they call tv PROGRAMMING for a very interesting reason ;) )

They recently changed stylists. His name is Ted Gibson and Friday was his first time on the show.

The woman initially didn't like her color but it grew on her. Here's her before and after, click on image 8.

I read on another forum that Nick is being replaced. Buh-bye! I used to like him in the beginning, but I swear the producers must've told him to stop being creative and just do a boring bob on everybody because that's all he does. He's like the Magnum (see Zoolander movie) of the hair cutting industry LOL

OMG!! I was thinking the same thing because I LOVE THIS SHOW but I hate the way he styles the hair most of the time. Every time there's a sista it's like he doesn't know what to do with her hair. He just gives her a cut that's all one length with no shape or style and the hair comes out so BLAAAH because he puts all his faith in that darn diffuser!!

I'm not a big fan of his work. His styles are too boring, think 1980's librarians.

Don't knock librarians. There was nothing boring about my hair when I was one. It was so torn up that people couldn't help but take notice! :lachen::lachen:

Sorry- just woke up and I'm a bit slap happy. As for Nick, I think he has a tough job. His styles are instantly seen on tv- I think that's why he plays it safe. From what I've seen, most of his styles are ones that can easily be grown out and styled at home by those with little to no skills. I'd play it safe too in his position.
