Recently in my nutrition class my professor mentioned that when he body is under major stress the biotin that is present in the body is depleted thus resulting in hair breakage.

It is true cuz this happened to me. i was taking biotin for hair growth during the time my marrigae was ending, my son had an operation and I had gained weight. My hair broke and fell off. My nutritionist told me to stop taking the biotin til I got my stress under control

This is good info. and this would explain why many do lose some hair during stressful times. Also, just FYI--the body also stores extra fat when we're overly stressed=weight gain! This is part of the body's fight or flight response. So, when people say exercise to relieve stress--not only does it release endorphins which make us feel better, but releases some of those darn fat stores that the body all of a sudden thinks it needs. The human body is amazing though!

Doing some quick research on the internet,

What You Should Eat & Why

biotin
Biotin assists the body in metabolizing protein, fats, and carbohydrates from food. It is important during times of stress because it plays a special role in helping the body to use glucose and promotes overall equilibrium along with the other B vitamins.
Leading Food Sources of biotin: Cauliflower, Eggs, Peanuts, Cheese, fresh.

Actually, the entire article I found interesting: Food Remedies

I also thought this was interesting ... it looks like pantothenic acid may be good for more than just thickening the hair:

Vitamin B5, Vitamin. (Pantothenic Acid). Known as "the anti-stress vitamin," it plays a role in the production of the adrenal hormones and the formation of antibodies, aids in vitamin utilization, and helps convert fats, carbohydrates and proteins into energy. It is also a stamina enhancer and prevents certain forms of anemia. It is needed for normal functioning of the gastrointestinal tract and may be helpful in treating depression and anxiety. http://www.womens-health-naturally.com/stress_aid.htm

That's why it is so important to assess your individual situation. Stress can do horrible things to your hair and skin. Your professor is right about biotin. It's not just that but the entire B-complex family, not to mention other vitamins like C. When someone says "you are literally burning your Bs", the regular plus the extra stress is depleting them badly.
