The best detanglers for uncontrollable thick hair

I've been having so much trouble with tangles and combing my hair especially after shampoo/conditioning, I don't know what to do or use to help the comb slide through. its so thick, and when my new growth comes in, it gets worse. To avoid dealing with my hair, for the past 6 weeks i've had to wear cornrows to prevent breakage and to retain length. I really feel like giving up, on this hair journey it should be called "My Nightmare Journey," . I'm very concerned because i must remove my braids in two weeks, and i'm dreading how to manage at all. Any suggestions will be welcomed.

Re: What\'s the best detanglers for uncontrollable hair

My hair is thick too and it's easier to manage 1) when my hair is wet after conditioner rinses and 2) when I use a large pick. I don't use combs that often because the teeth aren't long enough. I suggest you try a large pick because detangling will be much easier.

This past spring I had a lot of new growth too and way I managed it was to do braidouts. I wash and put my hair in 16-30 braids with perm rods on the ends and then the next day I take them out. The braidouts last me a week and I don't have to do anything to my hair. The only thing that I do is wear a scarf. When it's time for me to wash my hair again, it's easier to manage because I don't have knots and tangles in my hair.

Re: What\'s the best detanglers for uncontrollable hair

Thanks blueflower..., that sounds like a great method to avoid tangles and too much manipulation. I have one more question though...what products would you suggest for detangling and for braid-outs?

Re: What\'s the best detanglers for uncontrollable hair

I really don't use any kind of detangling products. At night I do a conditioner rinse which makes my hair soft. I don't think it's a good idea to put a lot of products on your hair. I've done that before and when I tried to do a conditioner rinse my hair felt hard, rough, and was difficult to detangle even with the pick. For me it's simply conditioner rinse, pick, and avocado butter. Avocado butter is greasy, but not greasy icky like the usual hair grease. I used hair grease before on my braidouts and it was messy. My hair was greasy to the touch and my face and hands were greasy. I had used too much :OS I don't know of any other products to recommend because all I use is avocado butter. I've never used gel for braidouts.

Re: What\'s the best detanglers for uncontrollable hair

Aaaaaaaah, the pick. Thank you!!!!!!!! That's exactly what I need. That makes perfect sense because the teeth are longer. I guess that's why people use the K-cutter. I'm going to have to get me one of those.

Re: What\'s the best detanglers for uncontrollable hair

If you ever try the braidout make sure that you put perm rods on the ends! If you don't, they'll be frizzy and puffy. If you want to refresh your braid out, make twists instead. I would like to see pictures too, if you post them. ;O)

The handle on the K-cutter is too wobbly for me. I only use it when I can't find my pick. I love the pick more because I have more control over it.

When I was transitioning, Rusk Invisible saved me a lot of hair.

It's a thick, shampoo-like liquid that you slather on your hair (it lathers a little bit), combthrough and then rinse. It's very light and leaves no build up, so you can condition before or after. Definitely recommended

I guess it depends on how thick your braids are and how curly you want the ends to be. An even better idea would be to use straws. Bigger straws would work best on your thick hair.

Re: What\'s the best detanglers for uncontrollable hair

I used Giovanni direct leave-in last night for the first time . . . I was in love at first touch

. The tangles just disappeared!
I also have the Pantene light spray conditioner that detangles. It does an excellent job also, but my hair seems to lack shine after I use it. I've added jojoba oil to it and that has helped some.

Re: What\'s the best detanglers for uncontrollable hair

I tried the codes & they're not working anymore. They must have changed them or ended the promo.

Re: What\'s the best detanglers for uncontrollable hair

Slather your hair with conditioner BEFORE shampooing ( I use Neutrogena Triple Moisture Daily Deep Conditioner or Kenra Moisturizing) and detangle WHILE rinsing under the shower head with wide-tooth comb (I use a shower comb). Then shampoo and condition as usual after detangling.

Re: What\'s the best detanglers for uncontrollable hair

Den 1 I find that kids organic shea butter detangling lotion really help the tangles and nots etc. on my just washed hair .It also has mainly natural ingredients so maybe you should give that a try its quite a reasonable price aswell .Which is good because it goes down really fast espcially when everyone in your familys ofund out how good it is .

you can also add honey and olive to your pre-treatment and leave it in for about 30-45 min. It helps a bunch with tangles. Apply a liquid oil closer to the scalp after the wash to soften new growth. HTH

I'm iffy on you using that protein conditioner as a pre-treatment for detangling.

I think you'd be better off using the KeraCare Humecto since it's a moisturizing conditioner.

Re: What\'s the best detanglers for uncontrollable

you could also try using the NTM- deep conditioner to detangle .

Re: The best detanglers for uncontrollable thick h

Is Biolage available in the UK? I've been recommending Biolage Detangling Solution to others who wanted some slip.

Re: The best detanglers for uncontrollable thick h

Den, I have been following your hair growth for years, and I think your hair is so lovely. I have very thick hair too, I find that when its time for a touch up its usually very dry and hard to handle. Here's what I do (I know you probably already know about this but maybe you can find something that helps, and I'm texturized too). I do co-washes 2-3 times a week it makes my hair so soft and you can use cheapie conditioner like cholesterol etc, the one that really works for me now is Silk Element--loads of slip and softness! Now that my hair is healthier I find that I don't need to do so many deep treatments, I used to do them once a week now once every 2 weeks. I do Aphogee every 6 weeks, I only use natural butters or essential oils on my hair and I surge. Also, I separate my hair like Robin says for washing but also for combing. How about adding an oil, like olive oil on your hair before washing? That really helps me with the tangles. I know you already have this all down path but I just wanted to throw in my 2 cents
