@aicramphoto... this channel is great YouTube - I made it to mbl (mid back length) very knowledgeable, also kimmay and YouTube - CARUSO ION STEAM ROLLERS HAIRSETTER nina
and YouTube - Winter Hair Protection: Prevent Dry Hair and Maintain Moisture <-- love her

that first video just gave me an idea... i may micro my hair with no add-ins and just wear a headband (push it back)... my hair is thin so it won't look full enough to wear it down..... however pulling it back (not tight) into a bun or just a headband may work ok

and I will still steam, wash, condition, co-wash*****, and acv rinse, pH balance, whatever's clever in the braids!

i love micro braids (w/ weave)... however they always thin my hair out

i would say my strands are medium to fine with low density on the sides and medium density in the back..

Regimen's
regular regimen
wash blowdry, press, flat iron every 3 weeks.
deep condition and rest one week with a no heat style.
summer regimen: wash every 2-3 weeks wearing no/low heat styles. i still press 1x a month it just doesnt last 3 weeks like usual.i also airdry instead.
weave regimen
wash and apply grease and let air dry in braids.. then i cornrow hair and sew on a net. i do not bother the hair after that.maybe a light oiling here or therre. i am trying to wear weaves 2-3 months at a time.
Issues
extreme puffiness especially at the root. regular heat usage and grease alleviated this:look:
******Products that work******
creamy conditioners with aloe high in the base
high quality grease and oils(not necessarily natural)
black soap
ultra sheen duo tex

products that don't
most hair products. my hair is very picky and fickle.
questions
no not really.
struggles
curl definition. but i fixed that issue.
needs
lots and lots of protein!

texture shot. raw hair.

here is after a demi permanet. my hair was little more porous so the curl is very defined. it was temporary though. i dunno what is going on wiht the top of my hair:look: it has always been like that. it all looks the same when dry though.

Napp.... what length are you in this pic Photo: missed a spot | Dec 09 album | Napp | Fotki.com, photo and video sharing made easy.

i'm wondering how you get all of your hair in a bun (smoothing) w/out breakage

I could only do that wet... and it breaks when wet
also... you hair is so textured/curly even in the bun

on you siggy... it looks extremely silky (this is always where i get lost... on the typing bizness).... mine is more cottony ... so I never think I'm in the right category:perplexed

Hi 4A ladies!!! I'm a 4A too, fancy meeting you here (lol) okay, seriously:

Regimen

Yea, about that...I don't have much going on in that department I know I need to moisturize and seal and protect and clarify every once in awhile; but I'm still TWA so I don't do much to it. Been wearing a wig for the past month or so and putting my own kinky twists with extensions in as we speak! It's laborious!

Issues

Hmm...dryness is an issue; but my hair will be dry and oily; so I feel like I need to wash to start over, but I hate shampoo! It's drying it makes me hair cry!

******Products that work******

EVOO, L'Occitane Shea Butter conditioner, Aloe Juice (I think), Nexxus Humectress, Water, Vaseline

Products that don't

Umm...unrefined shea butter...that's about it really.

Questions

Who can help with this dryness? Like really, I hate manipulation so I don't understand how you guys get these heavy butters and creams in your hair without lots of ruffling and such; can somebody explain that?

Struggles

Moisturizing my curls without messing them up and once again...dryness and IDK what "ssk" are...but I keep hearing they are common for 4A's but I don't know if I have them or not (?) and oh yea FRIZZ!!!!! My hair is so frizzy!

Needs
Recipes that make ultra-conditioning spray moisturizers...or an ultra-moisturizing spray conditioner already-manufactured that I can buy, I'll take either one.

Oh and the required pics (although they are the same in in the 4A thread):
IMAG0238-1.jpg

This shot is very 4B to me...am I a 4B? Let me know...

^^^I think you are a 4a. Your hair just looks like it can get very fluffy and that pic is blurry, but I still see large enough coils for me to think you're 4a.

Hi Y'all i havent been on here in a hot minute, but anyway im a mostly 4a (i think). So i want to post. I bc'd in Aug 09 to a fade and and about 1.5yrs into my journey.

Regimen's: Um i dont have a solid regimen, i try and do what my hair tells me. LOL

Issues: Um i have ssk, detangling issues as of recent and i believe that led to breakage in very small spot on the back of my head (which happens to be the most tightly curled and the hardest to see.) So im working on that.

******Products that work****** : Suave conditioners, kccc/kckn, Tigi Moisture Maniac, Sallys GVP the detangler, Hot six oil, coconut oil, Olive oil Eco styler, Shea Moisture Coconut-Shea Butter Deep Treatment, Raw shea butter,ORS Shampoo/Replensher, Giovanni direct leave in....thats all i can think of!

products that don't- last i tried Aloe Vera Gel, Petroleum Products- Hair Grease,Long Aid Glycerin. I havent been a pj since i started i usually buy the ol' reliable products, and havent experimented recently.

questions: None i could think of right now

struggles: As i said detangling well and properly, and ssk, and

needs: i like how the gel gives me some hold and keeps my hair looking shiny and uniform and wonder if there is a natural alternative.

Im currently switching from wash n go's to braid/braidouts, twist/twist outs. I feel i need to keep my hair stretched so it wont tangle. Oh and i saw some split/knot combinations- me no likey!

I am mostly 4a, but I think I have a patch behind my right ear that wants to be 4b. I have fine to medium strands with normal density, but I have a thin spot on my right temple. It has always been that way since I was little. I working on thickening it up though.

Regimen
1. Pre-poo (Aloe Vera Juice and Wheat Germ Oil or Coconut Oil)

2. Dry Finger Detangle and Twist Prep **Haven't used a comb since 7/2010. (Done the day before as well)

3. Water Rinse

4. Shampoo (More Moisture Raspberry & Brazil Nut Shampoo)

5. Condition and Finger Detangle as needed or Deep Condition w/ Steamer (Silk Elements Megasilk Moisturizing Treatment)

5. Plop (Hair Turban or Towel) or Air Dry

6. Moisturize (Shea Moisture Shea Butter Leave In)

7. Seal (Shea Butter (alone or mixed with Coconut or Castor Oil)

**Moisturize and seal every 2-3 days
**I do protein treatments every 2 months with Aphogee Two Step Treatment (after I shampoo and proceed with a deep condition)
**I clarify my hair every two months (Suave Clarifying Shampoo) usually before I do a protein treatment.
**Trim every 3 months.

PROTECTIVE STYLES:

-Two Strand Twists
-Flat Twists
-Updos
-Twist Extensions

Issues
I get a lot of SSK's/Splits and I have a little breakage due to not trimming like I should have (it is subsiding, since my last trim). Scab hair at my ends, but I'm slowly getting rid of them with each trim. My hair requires a lot of moisture, and if products don't give, it is the Sahara Desert up in my head. I believe I've combated this dryness by changing up my DC.

Products that Work
Aloe Vera Juice
Shea Butter
Coconut Oil
Castor Oil (only in the summer)
Olive Oil
Wheat Germ Oil
Silk Elements Mega Silk Moisturizing Treatment (my SAVIOR)
Shea Moisture Shea Butter Leave In Conditioner (thick and very moisturizing)
Burt's Bees Shampoo
Suave Coconut Conditioner
Aphogee 2 Step
V05 Moisture Milks Strawberry and Cream (good detangler)
YTC Leave In (good, but hard to find)
Suave Clarifying Shampoo
Trader Joe's Nourish Spa Conditioner (not a good detangler though)
Any thick and creamy moisturizer

Products that Do Not Work
Giovanni Direct Leave In (Ughh dry city, what a nightmare)
Black Tea Rinse
Elasta QP Intense Fortifying Hair Conditioner (my hair is laughin:lachen:)
KKNT (surprisingly)
S-Curl (BUT, I'm gonna try it on dry hair in the summer, so this may change)
Eco Styler (while I like how it looked, I get a lot of SSK's)
There are others I just can't think of them right now

Questions
None at the moment

Struggles
Keeping moisture for an extended period of time
SSK's
Breakage
Splits at the ends and in my hair shaft
Protective Styling (I have commitment issues)

Needs
Moisture, protection, low-manipulation

*Pics are damp hair after a wash

The leave-ins moisturize nicely: Nu Gro, Kinky Curly Knot Today or Organic Root Stimulator leave in. Then I seal with either a very light application of oil or the Elasta QP or Carol's Daughter hair honey. Only the ORS has a little protein and the ingredient is listed at the bottom.

I tried no protein for two years, so I started after summer 2010.

PS, it is hard to find a moisturizer or conditioner nowadays with no protein. Manufacturers seem to be on a protein blitz!

i was on the money the first time! i had to break down everything that you use and a lot of the products are not for moisturizing, more for sealing, even though some products first ingredient is water, but filled with a bunch of oils, it turns more into a butter than an actual moisturizer.

Carol's Daughter butter has beeswax, the honey products is nothing but oils
Organic Root is protein filled based ingredients
Megatek - is a protein conditioner
Nu-Gro moisturizing spray is oil filled with glycerin
you do reconstructive treatments twice a month -protein

most of your products are emollient-based products. While water is the first ingredient, there are really no conditioning agents or moisturizers, Just oils and butters.

there is nothing wrong with certain type of protein, but you just need to choose what products are best and cut the rest.

OK, what moisturizers do you suggest?

I thought I was using products that moisturize.

My hair never feels dry. I eat pretty well, so that may be the reason. Lots of fruit and veggies, water or herbal teas with stevia, one pack of raw sugar once in a while. Little white carbs and chicken or fish (I don't tolerate meat well at all). I know I need to eat protein so I do protein shakes more for nutrition rather than dieting and I look at the ingredients carefully (no sucralose, other bodybuilding junk or lactose, etc).

Perhaps that's why my hair doesn't feel dry at all, so I am unsure about the moisturizers.

BTW: I just read my previous posts and I can see where I wasn't very clear:

I only just recently started putting the Carol's daughter hair honey on the ends. It was a variation of the vaseline challenge where folks put it on the ends only. That seems to be working.

I only use the megatek on the scalp, not the hair itself. The Nu gro has the garlic and I have had no shedding. I also take garlic.

I have had minimum breakage, so maybe this works. Also, someone posted that bunning make not be for everyone and that could be true. I LOVE my wash n go's but, honestly, I seem to be one of the naturals who can flat iron successfully. I just got lazy.

Sorry so long, but I didn't seem to be clear. Thanks! :yep:

in that pic i was in between sl and apl.

the key to getting my hair in a bun is to not do it when soaking wet. wet buns will give me matting no matter what plus they do not get very smooth especially after they dry. plus when they dry they cause extra tenton from the hair drawing up. i usualy do them on lightly damp hair. i notice that too much water in the hair will dilute the effect of what ever product i am going to use to hold my hair back.

my hair only looks "silky" because of products and technique. when i use gel my hair looks more textured and when i use something creamy it has a smooth look. here is an example of my hair slicked back with gel
Photo: FLAT HAIR | Oct 09 album | Napp | Fotki.com, photo and video sharing made easy.

and here it is slicked with conditioner and a dab o grease
Photo: Looser side | July 09-Easy breezy lemon peezy album | Napp | Fotki.com, photo and video sharing made easy.

to get it as smooth i make sure my hair is detangled before wrangling it in a bun. then i gather it up and smooth it with a fine toothed comb. it doesnt have super fine teeth. the comb makes a difference to get the under layers as flat and smooth as possible. i have not gotten satisfactory results with other tools but then again i am very particular about how i want my hair to look.

as far as breakage i do have breakage around my perimiter about 1/2 an inch in. i have been struggling with this forever.after that point my hair is long and pretty much the same length.it was less dramatic when i never bunned but afterwards it went right back to the way it was. its is not noticeable at all unless i am going to do small twists braids with my natural hair.

my siggy bun is slicked with rusk smoothing conditioner which also makes my hair looks extra shiny.

i had actually video taped a tutorial on how i slick my hair back but i never got around to editing it. one of these days i might do a new one.

sorry for the long answer. i just keep typing and typing:drunk:

Shortdub, which moisturizers did you recommend?

Hair in siggy.

My hair is dense (appears thick, tons of strands) but my hair (strands) are fine. Struggle: Signficant problems as I have to treat it like the finest of silk (because of fine strands) while detangling tons of these strand sloooowly. SOOOO it takes waaay longer.

Things that don't work: Also Denman brush is a no no. Thought it was great (smooth result) untiL I realized it was taking out too much hair (perhaps because it's fine and it's too dense? who knows).

Surprise Suprise: my hair craves moisture, no hard protein dare touch my head. Give me a moisturizing conditioner and my hair is in love.

Proteins that I run from: ApHogee anything

Proteins that work (and are lighter) Silk proteins work and wheat proteins though (but they help with moisture retention). Also avocado oils (which have protein) and coconut (same) are lighter protein are good. Love to saturate my hair in that day before wash. Also

Love conditioner washing most times 1 xwk or every 2wk (with dry shampoo in between if I wear it straight to maintain with low manipulation).

Low manipulation is a must. I like to keep my hair stretched (mostly braids or some other protective style for the past year but that's to retain every inch. Usually it's partial protective style, partial out and when out flat ironed and left alone. ONly a little argon oil on ends)

Moisture I like to saturate before braiding up :shescentit hair butter (specifically seyana is my favorite) and also some argon oil (another of my favorite oils). I LOOOVE it! Also love:African Pride Carrot and vitamin E creme conditioner (leave in) as a form of moisture.

No wet dry pics. And my hair is currently in a protective style so thats not going to happen anytime soon.

I have a question. Do any of you all roller set? I would love to achieve this but my hair is so coily it curls up on itself when I'm trying to roll it. NO KIND OF ROLLERS HELP AT ALL!! :cry2: Have any 4a's been able to do it successfully? What is your technique?

I really haven't had the patience to at this length...but the last time I rollerset I tried something pocahontas recommended (I know she's a different textue). The pony roller set. THAT's how you get it to keep from coiling on itself. AND also you need to have ouch less rubber bands (the silicone kind that won't break your hair), and also rollers that aren't too big (depends on length). YOu sould divide yourself into 4-6 sections. Each section you ponytail (like a kid). Make sure you've already put on whatever product (I used water mostly mixed with lacio lacio) and detangle before putting the pony tail. THEN you'll have a "tighter" easier grip for your rollers. Comb the rest again (respray or whatever) and then roll away. Put in your clips (I use magnetic rollers) and ta da! When you take them out you will have a "mark from the rubber bands but you can comb that out after drying OR after drying you can take off rubber bands and:

you can do a silk wrap which will get hair even straighter: wrap hair as one normally does then put one layer of saran wrap and sit under a dryer ( I have a portable hooded soft dryer so I don't have to sit still I can move around, by plugging it into an extension cord and do what I need while it's drying). Stay under dryer for 15 min or so, and take down and done.

Your welcome. If you do the saran wrap make sure that you only do one thin layer. The more does not equal the merrier. If you do more, you'll sweat and then you'll have defeated your purpose.

You just want one thin layer and then under the dryer really quick again to straighten the hair out. AND it will be super silky!:yep: I like it like that. Somepeople go an extra step and flat iron the roots but I don't think it's necessary as it'll get pretty straight just like that.

Report back. I'd love to hear how it goes.

OK, I will. I just got my hair straightened (only thing I don't know how to do on my own) and the experience wasn't that great this time around :nono:. So it's my resolve to learn how to do it myself. I probably will try it next weekend and report back .

Hey I'm new to the hair typing system and i hope I'm in the right place:dork:
My hair is fine and curly but as far as I'm concerned I'm 4a but with thinish hair.

hey DayDreamist

we can't really see your curl pattern in that pic (girl i know... i have the same type of pics, can't really see my hair pattern in mine either)

but conditioner & oil normally makes you hair curl (supposedly the typing is done on naked hair no product)

I may start a thread of conditioner hair typing b/c most use that anyway

but from my experience... if you have a curl pattern conditioner, oil both may enhance that pattern

(do you have any washed, no product?)

That was the only thing I used to go to the shop for too - straightening. It took me quite a few tries to get it right and find the right products but I finally got it. I've gotten it down to a science now. I can never get it as straight as they do at the shop but it comes out pretty good. :yep:

I don't know if I'm doing this reply correctly but here it goes!
Oh ok thanks for the info and I see what you mean about the curl enhancement. I will be cowashing 2moro or 2nite for sure so I will upload a pic then! I was iffy about that pic too I tried to take that pic 3 different ways lol!

which flat iron are u using? (and pre-ironing products?)

I use a Chi flat iron and John Frieda Frizz Ease serum. I put the serum on my hair when it's soaking wet. Then I blowdry. Then I spray Chi heat protectant on the hair before I flat iron. I flat iron between the 360 and 410 notch. The iron starts to smoke at 410, so I know that's too high.

The Chi has worked the best for me so far. I used to have a MaxiGlide and a GVP iron from Sallys. They worked okay but I've gotten the best results with the Chi. If I had known that, I would have bought one sooner. A Chi was also used on my hair during salon visits.

hello @tHENATuRALhAiRpRoJEcT

Here are my curl shots, lol. I'm thinking I'm a fine 4a, but like I said before this hair typing thing is new to me but I want a place where I can call hair home lol.

hey girl! I'm no hair typing scientist but i keep Nonie on payroll:look::yep:
and to me you appear to be a perfect 4a

when wet your curls may be a little heavier and elongated vs. when dry but it certainly looks alot like mine (especially the fine strands)

i have been applying the jamila henna... i didn't notice a difference yet (only a few applications.... ) but after using the aphogee reconstructor my texture changed ...it appears thicker and coarser than usual
i love it! hopefully over the next year I may be able to enhance a long-term thicker appearance

i bought a fhi platform (but i could have sworn the darn box said runway.... i dunno

but i don't use heat yet... but got a great deal

i was wondering why you mentioned not getting the exact results as the salon

have you ever tried "exactly the products and iron" your salon uses?

i definitely want a fhi runway, but I have to check when my shipment arrives
