TEMPORARY COLOR

What is it?
"This is anything that will wash out of your hair when it's shampooed the next time," McCraw explains. Products in this category include weekly rinses, colored mousses, spray-in hair color, "mascara-style" hair wands and touch-up sticks.

Who needs it?
If you're going gray and just need color in certain areas, this could be the right color fromula choice for you. If your hair has been highlighted or colored a bit TOO much, a temprory rinse can tone it down. If you're not ready to commit to color (or just need some mane drama for the evening), this is a great way to test out a new look.

How much coverage is provided?
Coverage depends on the color of product you select and how you apply it. For example, colored mousses come in brown and black and can cover quite well when daubed on targeted areas. Another bonus: They help in styling, too!

How long will it last?
You've got your look for just one shampoo...Then start over and try something else!

Shade maintenance: Not much to maintain with these ultra-temprary coloring options, but they do offer some styling edge. McCraw says most of these roducts should be applied as you style for added control--with the exception of spray-on color, which can shade a finished coif. His hot tip? Try "mascara" hair wands for a touch-up on your highlights between salon visits, or for a burst of special-occasion color.
