Tell the truth, how many vitamins do you consume daily?

I am so embarassed to admit this but I take 23. About 10 are for my hair, skin, and nails. The remainder are for my general health. Before I consulted with my doctor, I thought it was too much but he said it was okay and that he has patients that take more than that just as long as it is water soluble.

Wow, 23

Girlfriend, I have a hard time swallowing 1 pill for a headache :D!

I was taking "Flintstone Chewables" :D ... I really need to get back on my vit regime.

BTW, there's nothing to be embarrassed about... as long as ur healthy that's all that matters anyway.

I take 7. The meds that I take wreck havoc on my hair and nails, so I take I Vit. E a day, 3 hydrolyzed collagen pills twice a day.

Ha! "Flintstone chewables. Boy, I use to really love those when I was smaller. They taste really good..for a vitamin at least. Initially, I had a problem swallowing mine also but my doctor told me to take them with food or a thick drink such as orange juice. I can't take mine with water..as a matter of fact I refuse to! I also have good success taking them with apple juice followed by a banana if I don't have time to eat because my experience has been that if you take them on an empty stomach, odds are you're gonna feel nauseated(when this happens I always grab a carbonated drink to make me burp). My boyfriend always seems to hound me for taking so many vitamins so maybe thats why I am kinda embarassed but hey, I am reaping the benefits.

I never thought about taking vits with orange juice... that's a good idea for those like myself who have a hard time swallowing pills.

I take about 6 regularly, Starflower, Flaxseed Oil, Brewers Yeast, Biotin, Cod Liver Oil, Klamath Algae and occasionally Selenium. I take the Brewers Yeast & Biotin for my hair and the rest for PMT and general health. I take Starflower as opposed to Oil of Evening Primrose because it has a higher concentration of GLA.

What do the collagen pill do?
To quote BAILEYSCREAM, this is what collagen does:

Hi Brandy,

I'm currently taking Hydrolysed Collagen supplements. They are for the skin, hair and nails.
Collagen is a protein which provides the major building materials for growth, repair, and maintenance of skin (collagen is a good supplement to take if you have stretch marks), ligaments, bones, nails and hair. Collagen is 100% pure protein in a hydrolysed, soluble amino acid form allowing the body to effectively use it.

The instructions on my bottle says take 3 tablets twice daily on an empty stomach.

As you may or may not know, proteins and amino acids are best utilised by the body when in an acidic environment. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

So in answer to your initial question, what you read about collagen is absolutely correct. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Collagen
Collagen is a natural biomaterial that has unique properties and has been used for health care since the ancient Egyptian civilization.. It is the most abundant protein found in the body. There are 13 different types of collagen. Types 1, 3 and 5 are specific for skin.
Chains of amino acids make up collagen. These chains form collagen molecules which in turn, from fibrils. These fibrils produce fibers. Bundled fibers lead to body tissue formation.
Distribution and orientation of collagen reflects the function of the tissue in which it is found. For example, it is collagen that transmits tension in tendon, lends structural support in skin and bone and limits expansion in arteries.
Collagen plays an integral part during each phase of wound healing and is an excellent hemostatic agent. It absorbs 40 - 60 times its weight in fluid.
The most abundant and well characterized collagen is type 1 extracted from bovine (cow) hide. Other sources include porcine (pig), chicken tendon, bovine tendon, etc.
When applied to a wound, collagen initially acts as a hemostatic agent. Continued application seems to aid and hasten the body's own repair mechanisms.

Re: Tell the truth, how many vitamins do you consume daily?

 Why are you guys taking so many vitamins??? Is that safe??? Are you thinking it will increase hair growth or is it for medical reasons???

I only take two: a multi-vitamin and Super B Complex.

And look at the fro! TigerLily I love your hair's thickness, it looks really healthy. I'm taking notes of vits from this thread...

I take 7 also, but that number will decrease when I run out of the ones I am taking now. My new regimen will consist of a protein shake and MSM powder, rather than pills. I will also use flaxseed oil in the liquid form in my shake with the MSM powder, so I am going to cut the actual number of pills down to 4 :). I hate the pills :nono:.

Wow! That's a lot of vitamins. Here are mine:

* GNC NourishHair (2 per day)
* Centrum multi-vitamin (1 per day)

Is the powder better than the pills?? Is it expensive?? I just ran out of my MSM about a week ago and need to get more.. the NOW brand was really inexpensive...but maybe I should get the powder instead??

I take one multi-vitamin, and it is just for my overall health. It's not hair related at all.

Good thread. I actually wanted to pose the question about whether your doctors recommended you take fewer vits while the board was down, and forgot.

I've been to doctors who told me I was taking too many vits( I had been taking about 15 per day). I currently take fewer now per day(6), not because of the doctors orders but because my system hates the horsepills. But sometimes I'm embarrased to tell them I'm taking all these vits for hair growth.

I take 6, but in 2 days that will become 4. I take GNC Ultra Nourishair (2), Biotin 300mcg (2), and GNC Women's Ultra Mega (2). I was just trying to finish up that bottle of biotin I had.. I only have 4 left, so after that I'll just be taking the UNH and Multi.

Rush, I can't say if it's better in terms of effectiveness, but I imagine it would be comparable at the very least. I like that it doesn't have to dissolve and that I don't have to take a pill, so in terms of what I am looking for, it's a better choice for me. I think you ought to try it, since you're out of pills...if you don't like it, you can always switch back :). Let me know how you like it, if you give it a try.

I take 7 daily but they aren't all for hairgrowth

Prenatal - 1 per day (I'm pregnant)
Quercetin - 2 per day (allergies)
MSM - 3 per day (hair plus helps with joint/ligament pain)
Biotion - 1 per day

I also eat 1 salad daily with liquid flaxseed oil for the EFA's (lots of health benefits - took it long before I knew it had any impact on hair).

Right now I take Nature's Own Multivitamin for overall health, and I am very active, but experience joint and back pain, so I take glucoseamine/chondroitin for joints and cartilage. I also take folic acid (good for your reproductive system). And that's all.

Maybe I do take alot. When shopping for a multi the other day, my son said, all those you already take should make one multi, ya think?

I take:

One a day Womens (i ran out)
flax oil
msm powder
collagen
biotin
HSN tablet
Ester C
Omega 3-6-9 with borage

2 - Phytophanere
2 - Loma Lux AcnePill
2 - Acidophilus
1 - One a day (Energy)
1 - Wild yam root
1 - Silica
1 - Oil of Olay Even Complexion

Coming soon
1 - Biotin
1 - MSM

Discontinued
3 - Omega 3-6-9 // Once I heard about chicks losing weight (especially in their booties) I had to give that up...don't wanna lose the junk in my trunk :lachen:

WOW at some of the #s of pills per day. I would definitely check with a doctor if for about some of those combos, cause it seems a bit excessive to me. Currently I only take a Centrum and Biotin. I may add one or two more (Like an Omega 3) but i'm not doing anything over 5, thats way too much maintenance for me.

None, at the moment. :ohwell:

I'm definitely going to start taking vitamins again soon though. Just have to get around to buying them. Might wait until there is a sale though. Then I will be taking two 'Hair, Skin & Nails vitamins' and two 'Multivitamins' a day.

unless you go to an alternative med doctor, they will not know jack about vits. Trust.

Gotta take your own health in your own hands. it's very important to do reasearch for starting any vitamin. and let me add that all vits are not created equally....
