Taking Out Braids... HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I need my natural sister's help! I have 4A hair with extreme shrinkage. I'm determined to do my own hair and save the $$$$ ($200-$100 just isn't happening. Can't do it anymore!).

Any suggestions for products for a wash & go?
Have any of you learned to do two strand twists? I've tried, and tried, but my hair unravels immediately after! I even tried that Conair hair-braiding thingy and all it do was leave me with tangles from hell.

I'm determined to wean myself from hairstylist except for maintainance, i.e. trims -- and I'm even wary of that.

The most damage done to my hair and scalp has been by "stylists."

Hi, have you tried braidouts or twistouts they are really great and they look cute and won't damage your hair. Just plait your hair with a light moisturizer in it and unbraid it in the morning and you have a really cute style. For twistouts this is hard to explain...twist your hair and wrap it around (Bantu knots) and untwist in the morning and you'll have another cute do...Go the ourhair.net and click on the how to's link and it will show you how you can do all these different hairstyles yourself.

I've only done twistouts when I'm taking down my twists after they've been in for a month.

Now that I have 100 % natural hair braidouts seem almost impossible. The waves disappear the minute humidity hits them and I end up looking like Andre 3000!

I tried to get to this site and it no longer seems to exist. Does anyone else have this same problem? What happened to the braid lady????

It's never an automatic thing- those of us who do our own hair had lots of attempts and failures before we got it down!!

One thing about the 2 strand twists I found (and have had it verified by the experts here) was that in doing the twist you need to be twisting the strands in the samedirection and at the same time as you are twisting the strands around each other. Does that makes sense? Like, with the strand in your right hand, as you are moving it towards the right to wrap around the other strand, you are twisting that strand at the same time. I'm confusing myself trying to explain it, but in doing it that way it re-inforces the twist so that it will hold.
Oh, and you are very smart in wanting to do your hair yourself

- once I started braiding my hair on my own- the only money I have spent on my hair is for products. I use human hair when I braid so I don't have to buy hair (cause it's reusable- actually so is synthetic, but it's cheap enough to throw it away and buy more) unless I want to change the color.
