Switching from No Lye to Lye... Need your help!!!

A lot of people on the board mentioned I should try Lye relaxers. The only lye relaxer I've tried is Affirm, and it was alright. It made my hair bouncy, smooth, and soft. My question is how long should I wait to make the transition from No lye to Lye, and what are your suggestions for a good Lye relaxer???

Thanks,
Karima, 16 /images/graemlins/confused.gif

kamilla, i used Dark & Lovely No Lye since i started relaxing my hair in 1986. i switched to Affirm Lye with my last retouch in 11/02. once you decide which one, it's kinda just something you just do. if the Affirm made your hair bouncy, smooth and soft, why not keep using that? /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Ditto on what Adrienne said. You got good results so stick to the brand that works best for you. You can go from no lye to lye with no problems at all. Just don't make the switch back after you've used lye. /images/graemlins/nono.gif

Hi kamille, /images/graemlins/wave.gif

Adrienne and LD have a point. What you got from the Affirm relaxer is what you generally want a relaxer to do for you. It appears that the Affirm works well on you. It is one of the best relaxers available. I would definately recommend that you stick with it. Good luck! /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Hi LD, /images/graemlins/wave.gif

It's a relaxer that I would love to try, but I have to go to a salon to get it. (no way) I haven't found a salon I trust yet. My next relaxer will be with Elucence. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Good luck with the Elucence. Which strength are you going for?

[/ QUOTE ] Thanks girl. I've heard some of the ladies that use it say that it didn't straighten their hair completely. My hair tends to be a little resistent to relaxers, so I'm going to try the regular strength and keep my fingers crossed. /images/graemlins/crazy.gif

lol! all the best pebs. i could tell there was a battle between mizani and elucence for your next touch-up. i think elucence has had more raves than /images/graemlins/down.gif on this board. /images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I have to agree. If the Elucence doesn't work out, then Mizani, here I come. I would love to try Affirm, but I won't go to a salon. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Hi Kamilla, I also made the switch from no lye to lye about 8 months ago. It is a very good thing. It's done no damage to my hair, but actually improved the condition. This last relaxer I got very daring and pulled the lye all the way through my hair (my hair looks good now because of this) Good luck with your choice and let us know how it works.

PS. My daughter's name is Kamila (I've never met anyone else with that name). It means "perfection". /images/graemlins/smile.gif

OT:
I plan on naming my (yet unconceived /images/graemlins/baby2.gif) child Kamilah (Perfect) and my son (also yet unconceived /images/graemlins/baby2.gif) Hassan (beautiful, handsome). Their (future) father's name is Sharief (Honest, noble, distinguished).

Pebbles did you order your Elucence yet? Are you going to buy the conditioners to use with it. I think I will place my order today. /images/graemlins/drunk.gif

I'm going to make my purchase by wednesday of next week. I'm planning on getting the conditioner and 2 of their shampoos as well. Good luck. Please let me know how it goes for you! I can't wait to try it myself! /images/graemlins/smile.gif

I hear you Pebbles. /images/graemlins/smile.gif I'm afraid of most stylist, because I don't think the ones in my area care about hair health. They are more into styling. If the Elucence doesn't work for me (hopefully that's not the case) than I'll try to get my hands on the Affirm. I'm more comfortable doing my own touch ups, until a miracle happens. /images/graemlins/antlers.gif

Believe me, I'm with you when it comes to hairdressers. The ones around here can style hair. I can't take that away from them. But I have had no success finding a hairdresser that I could trust and stay with. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Armyqt did say that the ph of that relaxer is low. She used the regular strength and didn't get the results she wanted. I have to take that into consideration in making my purchase.

Sure will, I'm doing it in February. I haven't decided if I was going to buy there shampoo or just use a neutralizer from the beauty store. Do you feel more comfortable with using their shampoo?

I'm going to try to use the whole line at the time of my relaxer to see how it goes. Since products in a line are meant to compliment each other, I'm hoping to achieve optimum resuts. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

i'm toying with the idea of switching to affirm. but i am leery. not because i am afraid of what the relaxer will do but i am concerned if THAT relaxer will be used. i used motions oil moisturizer and bought the shampoo and conditioner as well with me because that way i know without a doubt that motions was put in my hair. i liked it but i heard the results arent always consistent which worries me. want to try affirm but i get this nagging feeling about getting it by the dominican ladies i went to to get the motions. i dont know what is behind the feeling but it is there and i know you should always trust your instincts. how do you know if THAT relaxer is used. i only picked motions because it was recommeneded and i could physically pick it up myself. thats one of the reasons i wish my friends were professional hair dressers so i could get not have to worry about this. God bless you all.

Hi azul11,

I have to say, I never gave much thought or questioned the fact that hairdressers would use the relaxer that they say they are using. Have you thought of asking them to show you the tub so that you can see it for yourself? I'm not sure of this, but you might be able to tell if it is something else that they dumped into the tub, you know? Just a thought... /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Hi Kamilla16

When I was relaxed, I switched from Gentle Treatment to Revlon...I really didn't have a set time, I just did it. /images/graemlins/smile.gif Out of all the lye relaxers I tried, Motions, Affirm PCJ (kiddie perm), I loved the Revlon one better (the professional one-mild), but since you are new to this you may want to use the one in the box first. Also, think about the texture of your hair when choosing the relaxer. A mild relaxer will get my hair straight in four minutes. My hair stop being dry, was silky with a wonderful shine and I was able to grow my own hair something I thought I would never be able to do. Uh Oh, let me stop before I run out and get a Revlon Relaxer. /images/graemlins/grin.gif

What exactly is the difference between lye and no lye?!?! Is there a difference if you switch from lye to no lye or no lye to lye?!?!? /images/graemlins/confused.gif Sorry if I confused anyone don't worry I am just as confused! /images/graemlins/blush.gif

Lye is sodium hydroxide (which relaxes well but you MUST base the scalp because the pH is high and will burn your scalp. Lye is said to be better for you hair in the long run. No-lye uses calcium hydroxide which is gentler on the scalp but is known to dry out some womens hair (leaves calcium deposits) and leave it dull looking. Lye tends to work faster than no-lye and some women do not get the results that they want from a no-lye.
Lye relaxers are generally applied at the salon by a professional.

I'm switching to a lye relaxer on Feb 8th. I want to try the Affirm line because it was recommended by many of the ladies on this board. Is the Affirm only available in a salon? If not do you have to buy the shampoo to go w/ it or do it come in the box? I'm new to the whole lye relaxer thing so I don't know what to look for. What color is the container it comes in? The same questions above go for the Mizani relaxer. Sorry so many question ladies /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

omg i am wondering about this too. usually lye relaxers come witht a whole system of products to use in correlation of the relaxer. if affirm is not available to customers how will we get the full line. i know there are shady places who will charge affirm prices but it will be watered down or maybe something else. i am so leery. but i am interested in the response too. why is it so hard to find a decent spot to get a touchup. /images/graemlins/frown.gif /images/graemlins/frown.gif /images/graemlins/mad.gif /images/graemlins/mad.gif God bless you all.

Hi Drea84

I also wanted to add to Cleo's information regarding lye. Most of the ingredients used in "No lye" relaxers are called calcium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide or lithium hydroxide. They are all from the "origional" hydroxide family (which is Sodium Hydroxide "lye"). Because they are broken down, companies make their "no lye" products seem like they are not as harsh, but because they are not the origional (Sodium Hydroxide "Lye),they become more drying to the hair. Therefore, you are better off using the origional which is "Lye" relaxers that contain Sodium Hydroxide "Lye" than secondary ones (calcium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide or lithium hydroxide) "No Lye". I hope I didn't confuse you more. /images/graemlins/drunk.gif

Umm... I think I got it /images/graemlins/scratchchin.gif Lye is better because it is the original form of relaxer and it is not as drying as the no lye which is simply a broken down form of the lye relaxer. /images/graemlins/laugh.gif
