Successful Weave Wearers....

What is your regimen? By successful, I mean those that are able to retain length. I am thinking of getting a weave but I hear too many stories of breakage. There has to be a way to avoid this. What's your secret?

What products are you using?
How often do you wash?
How do you keep the braids full of moisture?
What other tips and pointers can you offer?

I no longer wear weaves, but when I did I was pretty good at it. I usually retained quite a bit of length by keeping my scalp & braids hydrated and/or oiled. I used Doo Gro Oil (Anti-itch, Mega-Thick, etc.), but I advise you to use whatever oils work best for your hair. I only used oil if the weave was curly. With straight weaves, I just got it washed and conditioned every two weeks, and made sure my hair and scalp were well oiled before the weave was put in.

I kept my weaves in for 3 months at a time and every time I took it down I got my hair washed, dc, & trimmed (if needed). As far as washes go while wearing a weave, my advice would be to wash as needed - which is usually when the hair starts acting up or appears oily. Make sure your scalp/braids are fully dry within 24 hours of washing your hair to avoid fungus/bacteria. Also, I don't recommend keeping a weave in for longer than 3 months at the MOST. In short, don't neglect the hair underneath the weave. As long as you treat your hair with the same caring and concern as you would if it weren't weaved up, you'll be fine!-HTH:grinwink:

Well I have worn weaves. Mostly quick weaves. Or have braides weaves with micros.Thank God I do retain length and it seems that my hair is getting thicker and thicker. Actually I have a half weave and half micro hair do right now. Like Meaganita said, you have to moisturize you hair under neath. I use QP Elasta Mango butter on my hair. What I do is I lift up the tracks and put it on my hair. Then I apply a lght oil to seal it in. I do not do this every day but at leats three times a week. I also wash once a week. That is not necessary for every person that wears a weave. But it works for me. My half weave/ half micro has been in since May/June. I plane on taking it out Monday 20 August and doing another one. I think a weave as long as you keep your hair moisturized can stay in any where from 1 month- 3/4 months. Good luck Kikootie.

When in a weave, I wash, DC, and air dry once a week. I keep my braids moisturized with a braid spray. The most important thing is to treat the weave hair with as much care as you treat your own hair to keep it looking nice.

ETA: I use the same products I use on my own hair when I wash and DC.

Thanks ladies!!

Does anyone else have anymore suggestions and product recommendations?

Just use what you're using now on your own hair since you know that's working for you. A good shampoo and a good conditioner. Some people dilute their shampoo with water. And something to keep your braids moisturized. I use African Royal BRX Spray. Some ladies use oil, S curl, grease, etc. You don't want to weigh the weave down with a bunch of products. It will make the hair look lackluster.

Also, I would suggest you wash in the shower and detangle with a wide toothed comb on hair full of conditioner. Do it under the stream of water. That should help minimize tangling.
