Stylists these days don\'t want to rollerset!!!

why?? Are they lazy??? I find when I go to the salon (I haven't in over a year and a half). If I ask for a rollerset, they screw up their faces and look at me like some kind of a wierdo and tell me that they'd have to blow it out anyway. Some want you to specify ROLLERSET when you book your appointment. I didn't know this before but, I guess they just automatically assume when people come in for a wash they want a blow out too...Sheesh...

Does anyone else have this experience?

Re: Stylists these days don\'t want to rollerset!!!

I have been using the same stylist for the last 10+ years. She hates to do blow-outs. She is against blow drying and hot curling for the most part and will try to encourage rollersets. Most of the clients she has do not like to sit under the dryer. They want to get in and get out. That's why I love that gal! I do have friends that go to stylists that are like the one you experienced.

Re: Stylists these days don\'t want to rollerset!!!

My stylist mainly does roller sets. If you ask for something else, she'll glady do it.

Re: Stylists these days don\'t want to rollerset!!!

Really??? I just find that many of the ones (with the exception of one who is too far away) around here say they don't have time for roller sets. You have block off an extra amount of time to do so. Even then you get major attitude. Hmm...Maybe I need to try setting my own hair? I wouldn't know the first thing though...and I'd have to go buy the right kind of rollers and stuff. Oh well...I guess it can be done. I should start practising from now before the holidays are here. LOL...

Re: Stylists these days don\'t want to rollerset!!!

My stylists prefers rollersets and wraps. However, she will do a blow dry or flat iron if you request it. But, you have to sit under the dryer first because a straight blow dry is to damaging to the hair.

Re: Stylists these days don\'t want to rollerset!!!

I think I am the only person who gets rollersets from my stylist. She does what I tell her to do (This is why she calls me "The Drill Seargent"). Everybody else gets these styles that will cause their hair to fall out.

Re: Stylists these days don\'t want to rollerset!!!

My stylist loves to do rollersets. She's the one that got me into them.

Re: Stylists these days don\'t want to rollerset!!!

You can always take your own magnetic rollers and pins and after she's put on the rollers you leave (hence it doesn't take the extra block of time). Then you can airdry or sit under your dome dryer when you get home. If you're unsure of which magnetic rollers they use, just ask them. Watch them closely when they're rollersetting, though. That's the best way to learn!

In general, I HATE the idea of stylists giving people attitude. Now WHO's doing who a favor here?!? (if there's any confusion, it's the PAYING customer doing the stylist a favor, NOT the other way round!

Janei,

I do this sometimes when I get my relaxer touch ups (cuts down on time at the salon).

My stylist always rollersets. He doesn't believe in blowdrying wet hair at all!! However, at the stylist I went to prior to him, they hardly ever roller-set, and they also would give you a look if you asked for one. You could tell they were thinking "Oh Jeez!!"

My hair was SOOO damaged when I was going there, I mean, when the stylist was blowdrying my hair, you could literally see little pieces of hair flying all over the place (NO LIE!!!). You would THINK he might suggest that I start rollersetting my hair since it didn't seem to be doing well with blowdrying, right???? Well, NOPE... he never did, and eventually I ended up having to cut most of my hair off!!!

Darn incompetent people!!!

Re: Stylists these days don\'t want to rollerset!!!

My stylist always rollersets or wraps my hair.

Re: Stylists these days don\'t want to rollerset!!!

My stylist prefers to rollerset as well. Anyone who goes to a stylist who gives attitude about it or anything else, run for the hills!

Re: Stylists these days don\'t want to rollerset!!!

I have always had my hair blow dried or wrapped. When its wrapped I am under the dryer for 3 or more hours(thick hair). I though roller setting put a lot of stress on the hair. I have no problems with the occasional blow dry. Is wet setting really better?

Re: Stylists these days don\'t want to rollerset!!!

I agree with you shiny black. I had to switch from my stylist who only blow dried hair to wrapping my hair wet at home! I tell you...you pay these stylists these days and they only want to do to your hair what they want to do! They have TOO much nerve!

Re: Stylists these days don\'t want to rollerset!!!

I used to go to a salon where you hardly ever saw anyone in rollers, hell, I think they only had two hair dryers in there. I think they don't like to do roller sets b/c blowdrying allows them to book more clients in one slot. That is why they don't like to reserve the extra time-probably thinking they could have someone else booked in that slot.

Re: Stylists these days don\'t want to rollerset!!!

Perhaps they get upset because rollersets generally cost cheaper than other styles, therefore they make less money.

Re: Stylists these days don\'t want to rollerset!!!

The younger hair stylist in my area hate to do rollersets
all they want to do is 27 step ponytails and place tracks
in your hair so they can make more money and have more
time to fit in extra clients.
IF you want rollerset you have to go to older stylist.

Re: Stylists these days don\'t want to rollerset!!!

I'm glad I've finally found a stylist in London who actually encourages roller sets, but I didn't do one because I was in a rush this weekend, so I had her blow dry and flat iron it. The good thing is that she puts the iron on a very low heat setting to minimise damage.

Re: Stylists these days don\'t want to rollerset!!!

My old stylist (who is my aunt) ALWAYS did rollersets. She never even used a curling iron on relaxed hair. The only time heat was used was during a press and curl.

Re: Stylists these days don\'t want to rollerset!!!

I know older stylists are the ones you need to see for roller sets and beauty schools are big on roller setting because they have to learn how to do like 10-15 different kinds of setting.

Re: Stylists these days don\'t want to rollerset!!!

The salon I go to is really great. The stylists really care about their clients' hair health. My hair stylist usually roller sets me or braids my hair. I only had a blow dry one time and she screamed at me. She said I just got color and shouldn't have my hair blow dried.

Re: Stylists these days don\'t want to rollerset!!!

lol.. I guess I should have added you could wear the rollers out if you don't mind looking ghetto

The place I used to get my relaxers was actually in a small shopping complex with parking spots right outside the door. If I had to wear my rollers out, I sure as heck would. however, if the salon is in a mall or something, that's a whole different story....

Re: Stylists these days don\'t want to rollerset!!!

If you live in an area that gets cold in the fall/winter you can wear a coat with a hood and put it up to cover the rollers, lol

I am running into this as well. I called a place today and the lady told me that a rollerset wouldn't work if my hair wasn't straight. I then asked her if she thought that having a rollerset done prior to flat ironing would produce better results. She said no. Then she asked me if was "all African American." I told her I was. And she said that unless I'm mixed or "you got some Indian in you I'm gonna have to put some heat on your hair." So now I'm really thinking I'm just gonna have to bite the bullet & do it myself.

The black stylists in Tallahassee, FL don't like to rollerset. They feel as if blow drying and flat ironing is the way to go. I can do that myself at home.

Wow, with that mindset i wouldn't want her touching my head! When she saw how pretty and long your hair is she would probably try to cut off about 5 or 6 inches.
