I had to go home this weekend, unfortunately, for my grandmother's funeral. I spent the first night with my girlfriend. She knew that it had been 6 months since my last retouch and she was dying to see it. As soon as I drove up to her door she came out and exclaimed, "Oh, my GOD!! Your hair is sooo pretty. And it's gotten so long. I can't believe that you've gone that long without a perm." We had been talking about all the info that I had gotten and I even invited her to the board a couple of weeks ago. She came to it, and I told her to look at Adrienne, the feature of the month. She was in shock. Of course, she doesn't know Adrienne so the true testimony came from her gazing on my hair and seeing how healthy it was. I had flat-ironed my roots so she couldn't really tell how much new growth I had. So I wet a small section so that she could see it. She was in total shock. She does her retouches every month, but after seeing my hair, she is convinced that she can do it too with the right regimen. And I totally agreed with her. I saw her hair and when she told me how many weeks it had been - about 4-5 and that she needed a perm, I just let her know that it was all in her mind.

And, my mother, in the church, at HER mother's funeral, put her hand in my hair and said, "I don't feel any tracks in here, but it sure is nappy. But it's pretty though." Now, mind you, my mother is no stranger to long hair - hers is at her waist and mine was always long when I was a little girl but not knowing how to take care of it kept it from reaching its full potential in my adulthood.

Just thought I'd tell all you stretching out relaxing folks to keep on keepin' on. You never know who might be watching and who might jump on the bandwagon with you.

Sorry to hear about your Grandmother.

Stretching out relaxers is one of the best things that I did for my hair!

Pls do tell. When I get to the 12 week mark it there is just to much breakage going on. The longest I've gone was 14 weeks. I'd like to go longer this time with less breakage. I'm at 5 weeks and counting.

Thanks, guys. She was a wonderful woman.

As for stretching out, I don't manipulate my hair much. It's mostly in my ponytail bun. I've done 2 Aphogee treatments. When I did my first Aphogee, my hair was breaking because I had not yet learned about moisturizing, conditioning, handling my hair gently, etc. I think I was at about 12 weeks then. Since then, I've learned a lot more. I just make sure that I do a deep protein conditioner every week and that's been helpful. I did another Aphogee about a month ago. It wasn't breaking. I just wanted to ensure that it didn't start breaking. I called it preventative maintenance. I followed it with a moisturizing conditioner and porosity control. It's really healthy and has a lot of elasticity in it. MUCH more than I've EVER seen in my hair. I think one of the keys to my hair not breaking is keeping it well moisturized which means it does not need to be porous so that all my moisture leaks out and doesn't stay in the shaft. After my next relaxer, I will be doing a porosity control treatment a few days to a week after and once a month thereafter.

Sorry to hear about your loss!

Thanks for sharing the hair story with us too!

The bottle says to put it on for about 30 seconds, but I leave it on for at least 15 minutes.

Rica, I'm mostly 4 with waves with 3c in the back. Coarse and thick. If only my hair was as fine as my daughter's. I would have no problem transitioning to natural. But alas, it is not.

Sorry to hear about your grandmother! Which deep pr. cond. do you use? How often do you do Aphogee? Every 3 mo.s? Also which porosity control ?

Qtpi, I use a homemade mixture of ion reconstructor with olive oil, coconut oil and peppermint oil and a little jojoba oil. I've only done the Aphogee twice in the 6 months. If I see breakage, I'll do it, but with the protein conditioner and the infrequent use of Surge on my hair (not the scalp lately), I haven't had the breakage. I did the Aphogee because I thought it wouldn't hurt. There was probably a 3 month gap between them. I believe that it's Roux porosity control. I'm not really sure. I just know that it is a pearlescent gray/purple bottle. I'll check the name when I get home.

Please fill us in on the Roux, as far as its name, and how often you use it. I, too, am 4 1/2 mths post-relaxer, and plan on holding out for a couple of more months. Good luck, and condolences to you and your family.

Definitely keep us posted. I'm also a type 4, and I haven't relaxed since early November, and I'm hoping to go longer (maybe a few more months) and maybe even transition. Any tips are much appreciated.

GodMadeMePretty--condolences to you and your family.

Your protein treatment sounds similar to Cathy Howse's conditioner except yours has jojoba oil (which I love!!!) Do you use a moisturizing conditioner afterwards?
