Hey ladies I've just become a fully paid member (after lurking forever lol).
I'm a 3c/4a ( I think) natural head fine strands, and want to know how many of you get split ends when wearing hair in natural state? I use heat very occasionally, about once every 3 months or so (working on that) and use water, evoo and shea butter to moisturize when I'm not WnGing.
Can ya help out?:perplexed

WELCOME!!!

Well do you have some photos of your hair so that we can see what your talking about? What products are you using? I'm natural, and it's rare that I get split ends, and I do check for them. I use protein tx 4x per year to help prevent them, and I trim when needed. Now that it's getting warmer I am on my spring/summer hair routine. Less heavy product, more conditioner washing. There's lots to know. I am sure that more will respond to your post. Just keep bumping if needed. Also you can check out http://www.nappturality it's a wonderful place to learn. Just be sure to READ, if not skim the rules. Over at NP, we don't talk about certain things, but you can learn alot about how you can care for your natural hair over there too. I would just suggest to keep readin the posts and do a search for posts about split ends. Hth. Good luck to you and WELCOME!!

This is what my hair looks like after an oil wash, and I am familiar with NP thanks. I have been natural before but used to wear is straight a lot, and had even mor splits then than I do now... This time holes in the strands themselves seems to be a problem:spinning:

Ok, have you tried to do the Aphogee for damaged hair? You can go to sally's and get the sample packs, or for round $10 you can get a bottle of the treatment, and the follow up conditioner. I would try the protein route, following up with DC tx weekly.

For ex.
week 1 hardcore aphogee w/ the conditioner, followed up with moisturizing deep conditioner w/ heat to under the cap to help open the cuticle

week 2 dc with moistuizing conditioner and heat under the cap
week 3 do week 2 again
week 4 us a light protein conditioner (suave, vo5,aussie ect) and
dc.

I would really try to up your protein, and then balance that out, w/ moisture and do that for atleast 2 mo and see what happens. You must be careful to have a good leave-in conditioner or tx that's moisturizing (emergency 911, taliah waad (sp?) giovanni) there's a bunch. Hth, maybe someone else will be able to help you better. Good luck to you :)

Haven't tried Aphogee- scared to based on what I've heard here...
But maybe I'll look into that, Thanks!

I had a head full of split ends resulting from being natural. Looking back these are the things I think I did wrong:

1. too much stretching and pulling my hair strands combing and brushing it while it was wet (daily)

2. I never did protein treatments because my hair was natural and I didn't know any better. :ohwell:

3. Wearing that damned puff e-v-e-r y day, and not keeping my hair in twists or other protective styles. I thought since I kept my hair moisturized, it would be okay. :nono:

I gave up.

I'm also natural and have a similar hair texture to you Aviah. Next time I wash my hair I'll take pictures of my texture. Anyways, I too notice in my own hair the splits your talking about. I wasn't sure of what to do also, but I think I will try the aphogee protein treatment(the hard one) this week when I wash. If you happen to try it before I do could you update on what products you tried and the outcome?

Splits are a normal when it comes to hair in general. I'm natural and I know that the biggest thing for me to keep in mind is moisturizing my ends and keeping up with my trims. For me... when I don't trim or dust my ends regularly my hair begins to split.

Currently I use the Aphogee once a month followed by a dc session and moisturize really well after wards. I'm holding out on my trim until May 1st that will officially mark 6 months without a real trim, my ends are OK, but could be in better shape.

Things to try:
Moisturizing ends daily
Baggie method ends
Protein or dc treatments.

I don't like the feeling of products on my hair. And that's why I don't moisturize my hair daily. I did try the baggy method once on my ponytail and I LOVED the results.

I try to keep up with my trims and usually dust every time I flat iron my hair.

For the ladies that suggested trimming, how often do you trim? My last was around December and there were splits almost immediately after that- with sharp scissors...:ohwell:
