Spinoff: Hair No-No's, What Are YOURS?

  • I brush, and always will.
  • I don't really sleep with my hair tied up. That's due to sheer laziness and I feel more free with my head against the pillow. However, I do tie it down at night.. sometimes :look:.
  • I don't moisturize my ends daily and never really have. I think good washing and deep conditioning is more than enough. Deep conditioning is the REAL moisturizer for me, everything else is secondary. I do use a moisturizer everyday though on my edges and nape, whatever remainder that I have on my hands I will throughout my hair. When I wash and airdry then I may run whatever moisturizer I have throughout my hair. As for baggying and all that, I could never  .
I feel you on the combing thing. I haven't figured out how not to comb and brush my hair at least twice a day. And I use the fine tooth rat tail combs after I detangle w/ no problems.

I don't moisturize every day because I don't feel it's necessary. I do it when my hair is not as moist as I'd like and I can't DC...that's usually once every 2 or 3 weeks. I think having to moisturize 2 and 3 times a day is a sign of an ineffective DC, but that's just me.

I think that's the only hair crime I commit on the regular.

I lOVEEEEEEEE CONES!

I do protein whenever I feel my hair needs it (sometimes every 3 weeks).

I like my haidresser  !

That's all I can think of for now...I'm sure there's more :p .
Hee hee:lol: Now thats a good one

I don't always tie my hair up, I'm just lazy.
Sometimes, I don't moisturize my hair every day.
I wear a cotton headband almost everyday.
B/c of my job, I have to wear a hat 5 days a week.
Sometimes, i leave my deep conditioner in for a lot more than the allotted time.

Thanks so much for starting this thread! Sweet!

:) I do EXACTLY what you do except:

1. I use heat weekly. Make that bi-weekly since I wash and deep condition bi-weekly. Yeah, y'all read that right.
2. I also comb my hair from roots to ends (hell, I didn't know this was a no-no hahaha, oh well).
3. I always detangle outside the shower (although if I get a shower comb I may change this one).
4. I comb my hair at least once a day. Brush it too if I'm in the mood.
5. I put grease or oil on my scalp.
6. I lather, rinse, and REPEAT.
7. I use a rinse-out conditioner before I deep condition. i DC first then use r-o conditioner

I have always told people to do what works for them. Of course, you can adopt things that work for other people into your regimen, but sometimes those things may work and other times they may not.

 You about read my mind!

Alright! Some of y'all are scaring me man. 'Specially you heat mongers:lol: I just can't do heat crimes man. It always, always shows on ya when you do. I don't want to hear NOBODY in this thread starting posts crying about how they had to hack of 2 inches, didn't reach their hair goals like they thought they would, or can't figure out why their ends look chewed and thin.  ALLLLLLLL the evidence is right up in dis here piece! :sekret:

Okay I got that out . . .:lachen:

Here are my other notable hair crimes::lol:

1.) I basically swear by no-lye relaxers- no lye's have been accused of just about every hair travesty imaginable on the boards:lol:

2.) I rip hair pins out of my buns at the end of the day . . . and I still use old broke down pins with the tips missing out of laziness

3.) My main comb has a tooth missing and I have used it for a year in its current toothless condition. And that missing point is jagged too. :look:

4.) I detangle from the roots down when wet too Mizani  My hair tangles like crazy if I work my way up as suggested. I never take my time doing this either.

5.) I haven't deep conditioned in months. 5-7 mins of conditioner tops... I have places to go man  I just wash more frequently to make up for that.

I do moisturize daily, tie up faithfully, bun on the regular, space out relaxers well, keep combing manipulation down, and heat to a minimum. I don't think those things will ever change. They're just me now.:D

1. I brush wet hair with a boar bristle brush when I rollerset.

2. My scarf always falls off at night so I sleep without protecting my edges:(

3. My hairdresser knows how to give a trim, NOT a cut. I trust her with this.

1. If I am low on time I will blow dry my hair instead of sitting under the dryer.
2. I flat iron once a week
3. I don't moisturise my hair every day.
4. I don't baggie.
5. I comb my hair every day except for the weekends when I am super lazy and just shake it out.
6. I don't do the crown and glory method. I still haven't figured out what it is.
7. I sometimes go two weeks before washing my hair
8. I too like my hair stylist :look:

I'm one who never combs my hair...definately has nothing to do with hair fallin out or breaking. my hair is extremely healthy/strong. I hardly even shed that much for one who never combs.
Has to do with 'no manipulation' which most definatly has worked for me.
Just leaving it alone....oh and laziness...laziness paid off tho..lol

I know I know *head hanging low* will yee ever forgive me? I PROMISE I don't use heat often, I promise.

I got one more to add lol!!

I change my baggie about once a month! I can't think of using up bags, plus I am so cheap.

I comb my hair atleast 3 times a day

I brush my hair (hard) every morning

I use gel and lots of it....and cones and petroleum.

I dont detangle in shower and comb my airdried hair.

I use heat (blow dryer and curling iron) twice a week when I shampoo, but I pre-poo and/or deep condition everytime and I seal to protect it from the heat. (When I master the rollerset, I will stop this... probably.)

I wear my hair down 3-4 days a week.

I don't baggy, unless weekly overnight pre-poos under a plastic cap counts.

-I wear my hair down & out every single day no protective styling used here..lol even over wool, terry cloth whatever..hehheh.
-Use no lye relaxers whichever they got. If they dont have optimum, then creme of nature, if not that one then whatever..lol
-I trim like once a year, I don't even remeber the last time I had my hair trimmed I think 2005.
-I haven't deep conditioned in awhile. Probably only every time I get a touchup which is 3-4 times a year
-I use heat at least twice a month
-I blow dry hair using a round brush then even flatiron after that with temp on 6 or 7 going over it like 3 times..hehheh
-I LOVE Cones and will use all of them..hehheh
-I LOVE ntm silk touch and use it all day everyday for years now even tho it has the sodium whatchumacallit in it and I don't care..hehheh

I NEVER moisturize. I could not figure out why I was having so much breakage and when I stopped the moisturizing my hair thrived. No more breakage and my hair never gets dry or dull. In fact, it shines and is very strong and soft to the touch. Also, I use protein in my hair every single day (Surge). My hair loves it!

   ..."Sodium Hydroxide...Hydroxxxxide.."

 ...I swear I need to write that dayum company a letter...we deserve some free ish...

i wish i could do what some of you do. i noticed when i wasnt moisturizing, wrapping and tying my hair down at night daily my hair would look like crap.

*I flatiron my roots after every rollerset, which is sometimes bi-weekly (thank you Sedu!).
*I use WGO as an ends moisturizer (yes, I know oils lubricate, not moisturize, but it works for me and I ain't stoppin').
*I also comb my hair from roots to ends and use a fine-toothed comb to rollerset.

I don't really think this is so bad. My hair is thriving still. I stay on top of my DC'ing and it's all good...Funny, I had more setbacks when I was trying to do all the right hair board things. Now I have a balance. I do what works and don't get all fanatical with the no heat, airdry, moisturize 50 times a day stuff. I'm gonna go with this for a bit a see where it takes me.

This thread...or someones post...actually made me realize what I have been doing wrong. I moisturize religiously DAILY...and if I don't my hair is not happy :nono: which wouldn't be such a crime if I wasn't

1) natural,
2) uses no kind of heat...direct or indirect since the BC six months ago,
3) a daily cowasher,
4) a non-comber...I have really curly hair and only detangle with a shower comb in the shower under running water.

What I don't do: Deep Condition :wallbash: :whyme: (dramatic knife stabbing music)

Thanks for this thread...I'm going to change this ASAP!

It's not. Some people seem to think it's their way or the highway when it comes to how hair can thrive. When I had setbacks in the past, I wasn't doing the things considered the "no-no's" now (for instance, I wasn't using heat at all when my hair was breaking off or thinning out because I wouldn't take care of it with a relaxer). Now if people choose not to do the things we do in this thread, that's their choice. Everyone knows what works best for their OWN hair and has their own reasons for doing whatever they choose to do. If airdrying works, do it. If bunning or other protective styling works, do it. If heat works, do it [but use a really great heat protectant (or even more than one if you wish) because science does not lie]. If using monistat on your head works, do it. HELL, if using feces on your head works, do that (but you may lose some of your friends this way).

Sometimes I fall asleep without covering my head with a satin bonnet. I haven't gotten around to buying a satin pillowcase either.

This is me, but I also:

-Wrap my hair every night.
-Comb my hair 4 or 5 times a day.
-Don't do protective styles until it's time for a touch up.
-Scratch my scalp ALL THE TIME (sometimes even if it doesn't itch) I really want to quit doing this, though.

I agree... if I use a crappy conditioner and leave in, then my hair won't feel as pliable and moist when dry, that's a sign that I need to find a more agreeable product :look: .

I tend to tear out my hair when I detangled b/c I don't properly finger comb or use a wide tooh comb.

I don't spend enough time detangling while in the shower. :( I just don't feel like doing my hair for an hour under the shower.

I sleep in conditioner about 2x a week.

I am guilty of the following hair crimes.........................

  • I also use a small tooth comb sometimes, but in very small sections. It is impossible to remove my shed hair completely with a wide tooth, which leads to matting and breakage.
  • I do not wash and detangle my hair in sections as often as I need. I know it is better for my hair but it is too time consuming.
  • When I use heat (quarterly), I am at or very close to the highest setting. If not, what's the point! Give me cones or give me life in prison! But I do use them sparingly. Mostly, when straightening or setting my hair. Hey, if I am entering dangerous territory anyway, I might as well go with guns blazing.
  • I am back on the mineral oil. I slathered on some vaseline when my hair was dry, dry , dry! Kept it on overnight, washed it out the next morning. My hair was back to normal. Desperate times call for desperate measures!
  • I use any kind of scissors to trim parts of my hair when the mood strikes. Yes, I have used scissors at the office as well.
Okay, give me my punishment. :p
