We're planning to replace the carpet with hardwood. I use natural skin lotions, toothpaste, deodorant, eat mostly organic fruit, and only eat free-range hormone-free chicken and eggs.

Side Note: Natural Deodorants never seem to do their job. Or at least i cant find one that does. I will give up parabens but i may have to stick with the regular deodorants b/c i want to keep my friends. Sareca if you have any reccomendations, please share.

Funk Butter, LOL!! My boyfriend always makes fun of my 'organic hair' products as it is. I would never hear the end of that one but i am willing to try it. Thanks MizaniMami!

Ok back to our regularly scheduled program :D .

I decided to take a different route... I threw out all of my household cleaners and pesticides. We're planning to replace the carpet with hardwood. I use natural skin lotions, toothpaste, deodorant, eat mostly organic fruit, and only eat free-range hormone-free chicken and eggs. That's all I'm doing. I have 2 conditioners that are organic. One I use as a conditioner. The other I use as a shampoo.

Nobody's taking my humecto or nexxus! Nobody. :look: I'm being cautious but I won't live my life in fear.

Hair products are just about the bottom of the list for me too. I am more concerned about the cleaning products I use (since the chemicals in them will be breathed in by my family) things I rub into my skin or kids' skin (don't use conventional lotions anymore) and what I ingest as well.

I AM starting to use more natural hair products (not concerned at all about the relaxer since a) I only use it 3-4 times a year b)Since I do it myself it doesn't sit on my scalp for 20min and c) it's a rinse-out product.)
I recently bought a new shampoo bar to try out and I'm going to try going without my spray leave-in and just use the oil I usually put on afterwards and see how that works.

In sum, natural FOOD and cleaning products FIRST!

The truth is no one really knows what these products are doing to us, and if it is the parabens that are the problem or some other combination. What I have heard, from a natural products expo that I attended about 2 weeks ago was the following:

Sulfates - don't pose any serious direct risk to the both but are known for depleting moisture, natural oils both externally (hair) and internally (water supply).
Parabens - traces of parabens were found in malignanat breat cancer tissue. Does this mean that the parabens caused the cancer? No. What it does mean is that for whatever reasons, cancerous cells absorb the parabens that are absorbed into your skin.

I am using a shampoo that contains Sulfates (Formula's by Ecoly Papaya Dry Hair Shampoo). My daily conditioner is paraben free (Formula's by Ecoly Sage Detangling Conditioner). My reconstructor has parabens (Formula's by Ecoly Tri-Wheat Reconstructor).

I'm thinking about making a switch to using only the KeraCare line, or using Giovanni products which are both paraben and sulfate free.

I'd love to use paraben free products but I know at this point in my life, my finances won't allow me to do that. Plus, I love using certain cheapie conditioners for my co-washes and they are chock full O parabens I'm sure!

You are so right Alli77! My finances are the same, and when I do try one I can't keep it up because for me it is too much money so I have to keep using what I have been using!

Okaaay! I've used all natural products that got moldy and funky after a few weeks. I couldn't throw that ish away fast enough. I swore I would never buy a product that wasn't properly preserved again!

Damn!!
What prods were those? Let me know so I can steer clear of that brand. Even "natural" products need some type of preservative. It doesnt have to be parabens.

Parabens are just about the bottom or bottom of any list of products I have seen them in. They are only added in small amounts since they are a preservative and not the moisturizing or conditioning, etc. agent. Clearly these tiny amounts are enough to have an effect.

I am only recently hearing the rumor that sulfates are supposedly dangerous to the health. I just knew to steer clear of them because they are drying, and stripping.

As far as parabens are concerned, it is true. There is no conclusive evidence that parabens are directly linked to cancer, but that they do mimic estrogenic activity (w/e that means). With the posts like : Health vs Hair, being made a sticky after all, (and many, many, many other posts) I wanted to see how many people are actually living by it, because it seemed to be such a resolution.
As I said, I am torn about this whole things, but do want to try out all natural prods as a lifestyle. But, if I'm going to do that, I might as well change my whole lifestyle, u know?

Yeah, I know. I haven't found one I completely trust either. For everyday use, sittin' in my overly air conditioned office, Jason's works just fine. But if I'm doing something outdoorsy I use an alumium-based deodorant.

I've just ordered this one http://www.shopearthessentials.com/search1.cfm?Search_Term=deodorant. Someone on the health/fitness board recommended it. I'll let you know how it goes.

So true. But think people are worried about a cumulative effect. A little in the conditioner, a little in the shampoo, a little in your hair moisturizer, a little in your make-up, a little in your skin lotion, a little in your makeup remover, a little in your sunscreen adds up to more than a little. But I agree we're probably being a bit paranoid. I'd feel better if a recommended daily allowance (RDA) was determined and each product labeled with an amount. Like they do for transfats in Europe.

:yep: I got Clean House, Clean Planet by Karen Logan and threw all the chemicals away. She has natural substitutes for everything. Last weekend I washed my bathroom mirrors with plain 'ol white vinegar and a couple drops of lemon essential oil. Yep, toothpaste and all. It cleaned just as well as Windex! After reading her book I realized there are far more dangerous things in most homes than any thing in any hair product.

ETA: The organic food thing is not w/o its pitfalls. I can no longer eat regular fruit unless it has a thick skin. And non-organic meat tastes a little spoiled. Oh and it's expensive.

I am trying to find products without parabens. My problem is finding a good shampoo. If i cant find one i like i'll just have to go back to using something i used to use before. But i wont mind that much, since i only wash my hair once a week. But i dont want to use something that has parabens in it on a daily basis.

We switched to organic poultry a few months ago and noticed it tastes better. I just bought some organic ground beef and we're going to try it tonight. It does cost ALOT more but dh and I would rather pay more money for organic food/cleaning products/etc. now than pay in decreased health and high medical bills later.

i actually switched to organic eggs and they're alot better as well. its three times as expensive as the regular eggs, but I'd rather be safe than sorry.

as for the chemicals in our products, its going to be very difficult finding products without sulfurs or parabens. in fact, almost all the shampoos mentioned on this board has SLS (sulfur) in it. the only thing we can really do is limit our use of those products. I also wish there was an RDA with cosmetics and hair products as well.

Many of the products I love have them and I am not ready to give them up. Not just hair products, skin ones too. Philosophy hope in a jar is a staple for me. Not sure if I can get rid of that or my curel lotion. Plus my dudly's PCA. So I don't know. I am more aware now, and I will probably continue to research things that are more natural.

I am also transitioning to vegetarian, so I am becoming more aware of so much. So I am happy to get the information that the ladies are sharing about these things on the board.

Then I'd need to stop breathing because of all of this smog polluted cancer causing air I'm taking into my lungs... pollutants are everywhere. Boy I wish I lived in a bubble.

True. There are potential dangers everywhere...lurking in your homes and office buildings, in the open air, in the foods we eat...even some we consider healthy like fish. Although, it's great to be smart and takes steps to protect ourselves and our families, we cannot live in a bubble. We need to keep in mind there are always risks to living in this world.

Also true. I believe that what we consume is a much bigger factor in how healthy we are. I somehow don't like organic meats as much as I thought I would...but I try my best to get natural meats that aren't treated with hormones/antibiotics and preservatives.

I'd rather eat healthier, low fat options and use my Creme of Nature faithfully than be loading up on Doritos and Oodles of Noodles and only using Aubrey's GPB.

Exactly. The point is the skin is the body's largest organ and so often we forget that things that are in direct contact with the body are going to be absorbed.

Which makes you wonder - what's a bigger threat - using HAIR products that contain parabens or using moisturizers and lotions that contain parabens. Note, most skin moisturizers/lotions ALSO contain parabens.

lately- i have been using more natural products on my hair. Trader Joe's liquid castile soap(peppermint)-16 oz. for $2.99, Trader Joe's refresh conditioner-$1.99 for 16 oz., Trader joe's essential conditioner- $1.99 for $16 oz., Hemp shampoo and hemp conditioner-www.wellnaturally.com , neem shampoo and rich creamy conditioner base - www.wellnaturally.com , liquid castile soap- www.thechemistrystore.com, grandpa's soaps(www.myvitanet.com) and lush hard water shampoo bar and jungle conditioner bar(www.lush.com)

Yep. I don't put body lotion on myself or the kids anymore. Straight shea butter/coconut oil, that sort of thing. Although I am guilty of the conventional moisturizers on my face. Need to try Aubreys for that as well.
