So my hair is breaking... and Im at a loss.

My hair is breaking and thinning like crazy and I'm at a loss as to what to do with it. All I have to do is run my fingers though it, and no matter how soft or conditioned it is, I get a tangle and hair breaks off. I can just TOUCH my hair once and the hair will break. I have no idea whats going on. And two days ago I flat ironed it, and it was SOOOOO thin. My ends are thinning now to the point that they are see through.

Here is my regimen.

Every two days I wash or co-wash with Oyin Grand Poo bar, and Honey hemp condish. or NTM moisture mask. If there is build up on my hair, I will rinse with ACV and honey.

Then I use, NTM silk touch leave in, Juice and berries spray from Oyin, and a few drops of NTM healing serum.

Let air dry, then flat iron into style, or braid up, let air dry and then finger comb.

I wrap it at night, and only use a Wide tooth comb and a peg paddle brush every once in a blue moon.

Im starting to get discouraged, because I have no idea WHY my hair is breaking off.

I just texlaxed on thrus. and used ORS Olive oil relaxer mixed with about 1/2 of EVOO, and only left it in for about 15 min. It knocked out SOME of the curl but not all. Then I conditioned with Hair Mayo, and then neutralized. I deep conditioned with ORS replenishing pak and then air dried. My hair is STILL BREAKING. The day before I relaxed I put two eggs in my hair and let them sit for about 30 min.

I dont know what to do.

Have you by any chance over done it with the protein and maybe your hair needs a bit of moisture? Have you added anything new that may not have agreed with you hair. Or maybe you could try an oil treatment and then a deep condition...dont dispear cos stree sometimes also induces hair breakage or it could be that and nothing to do with the hair products.

Are there any beauticians that you could go to to get a professional assessment? They are not always the enemy.

Maybe too many different products and the eggs didn't agree. Maybe you need different products and just ONE line of products for a while too.

When this happened to me, it turns out I had to stop relaxing/texturizing altogether as my hair just couldn't tolerate the chemicals anymore. I found a natural hair care specialist who had me to switch to Nioxin for thinning hair and it help tremendously.

Also consider going to a dermatologist.

HUGS and I hope you find a solution.

The last beautician I went to was a Dominican girl, who didn't give a crap about my hair, and kept telling me how badly I NEEDED a relaxer. She ripped though my hair with a flat iron and broke it off something bad.

The only other beauty shop that I know of here, is a NATURAL only salon and they charge an arm and a leg for EVERYTHING. This girl there wanted to charge me $200 for a straw set. HELL NO. The host of the salons here in Detroit are full of "stylists" who think that brown gel is a legitimate source of protein, and that, dirt helps "grow" your hair.

Needless to say I am NOT real excited to go to them.

I cannot stop relaxing my hair. I hate to say it, but I DON'T LIKE my texture, and I don't want to be stuck with it. I also know that If I stop relaxing Ill have to cut my hair and Ill loose ALL MY LENGTH. I cant do that.

Ill try the sticking to JUST one type of product thing for a little while, but I don't understand how I have too much protein. I used the eggs, because I was OVER moisturizing... I thought. Maybe I wasn't.

Ive been using NTM like a mad woman though.... And Im not sure why my hair is getting these nasty little tangles. The tangles are like two or three little hairs that somehow get a knot in them. and then when I run my fingers though... SNAP CRACKLE POP.... It breaks. I just don't get it. Its even happening when my hair is saturated with NTM.

So, you're airdrying and flatironing every two days? That may be too much manipulation and heat for your hair. Some people can't airdry without getting breakage, so maybe experiment with different ways of drying. And the flatiron 3 - 4 times a week, even on clean hair, could be way too much heat. You're zapping a lot of moisture out of your hair by doing that.

The first thing you should try is clarifying with a proper clarifying shampoo. ACV alone cannot clarify your hair. That's a common misconception. The cones in the NTM products are probably building up in your hair, blocking moisture. If you cowash, you should use a light conditioner with no cones like V05 or Suave. Seal your leave-in with an oil, not serum.

You could also start d/cing maybe every 1-2 weeks and moisturizing daily if you don't already. Limit heat use, also. Heat is a major culprit in breakage & thinning.

girl , i would stop using that ntm healing serum for a little while. as a confessed product crackhead, i ran out and bought this *crap* (it works for some , but not me) and it dried my hair out something serious. you need moisture. i made a thread just last week about my protein treatment (with egg) and my tangles and my hair breaking. i noticed the next day after that wash that my hair was so brittle and dry that here and there the hair would pop off from the root of the newgrowth. i did a con wash. i used dudleys hair rebuilder (its something like a reconstructor) on my dry hair and sat with no heat for about 20 or 30 min. washed it out with warm water and my hair felt so much better. im probably going to be washing my hair again this week and using moisture instead of protein.if i were you , i would try clarifying and doing a dc with moisturizing con.

I would suggest cutting NTM out of your reggie. When I first started using it, it was the best thing since sliced bread. After a while of using it, it became the devil and that serum was the demonic ringleader! Try clarifying your hair and don't use any NTM. See if you see an improvement.... Keep us posted, good luck! :crossfingers:

Sorry to hear of your troubles AmberMoon.

My hair thinned out due to heredity and aging. It was a gradual process over the years, but hopefully with LCHF, I can delay the inevitable. Here are some of the things I can share with you.
  • Sometmes, products that are "moisturizers" actually have a good amount of protein in it. It sounds like you have protein overload.
  • So far, everyone that has responded has given good advice. Try stopping the NTM products. Also, I found out that airdrying was contributing to my breakage problem; airdrying leaves the cuticle of the hair "raised," not smoothed "down."
  • Blowdrying, even on a low/cool setting helps to smooth the cuticle and prevent other hairs from catching and snagging on each other which causes breakage and snapping. Try using a low or cool setting when you blowdry.
  • Are you using a heat protector when you use any heat appliance? That is a big "DO!"
  • One other thing, sometimes too many different products combined with each other can be a concern. Not all the time, but sometime.
HTH and I am sure it will turn around.

I agree about the NTM serum. It feels good and smells good, but the build up is a plucka!

I'll look for a special breakage thread I started a while back and link it and/or bump it for you.

thank u for noting that. im starting to see that my hair does not really like airdrying at all. my ends are suffering from it

I'm going to make the evil suggestion:

You need to get your hair trimmed.

*dodges tomatoes*

Your hair is snarling and thinning, it sounds like you have heat damage. You need to go to a prof. stylist and get a trim. Also, try cold water rinses for a minute before you get out of the shower. Chill out with the flat iron and, after the trim, start baggying for a while.

*smile* It's okay. Trims are hard, but necessary. Are you diluting your ACV rinses? You may be doing them too often.

Have you noticed a color change in your hair?

:yep::yep::yep::yep: except for moistruzing daily, my hair doesn't like that.

Actually yeah. It has been turning a noticeable shade of auburn. But it usually does this in the summer, ever since I was a baby. (When I was born my hair was pretty red) So Im not sure if this really is a big indicator of anything.

ITA! I had MAJOR breakage for weeks until a stylist told me that rollersetting would help bring the breakage under control. She couldnt explain how but said it had worked for all her clients. ROLLERSET THAT HAIR GURL!

sounds like too much heat. my hair was thin and breaking like crazy when i joined and i was using heat wayyy to much, and i naturally have thin hair so it was a mess. since i stopped using the heat my hair thickened up and the breakage is almost nonexistent :yep:

Right! You a something WonderWoman!
I did my first rollerset (airdried) with magnetic rollers in many years on Saturday night. Though I didn't get a good "style" my hair is smooth and is full and with some body. That is important to me because I have thin hair. I wore my hair in my usual protective style, but it was smooth and polished with a lot of shine.:yep:

Okay, well if you start seeing stripes of colors in your hair, then you definitely are doing damage.

NTM silk touch leave in did the same thing to my hair, made it feel like it had static in it. Also, it stuck together. I switched to garnier fructis daily leave in cream for color treated hair....I use this on my dry hair, and the problem stopped.......

I agree. It sounds like protein overload. I would DC with a moisturizing conditioner (no protein) to see if it helps.

And please tell us that you're using heat protectant when you're using heat on your hair!

Thanks ladies. I will try all these.

On rollersetting however, I can never seem to get the rollers in right, and I dont have a hooded dryer so....

Also, go to the doctor. I mean the Medical Doctor. This could be a sign of a health problem. Your hair strands are weak, especially if you can just pull them out like that.

My hair was doing the same thing and it was due to medical issues. Go get checked out, just to be sure because if your body is not well, it will show up on your hair. No matter what you do to it.

Good tip. Thankfully I have an appointment to see the MD tomorrow eve.

So Ill ask about it then.

Hm.... thanks. I didnt know that about the ACV. Ill definitely go out and get a clarifying shampoo then.

And thats the other thing I didnt know, Here I am, using this heavy conditioner as a co-wash. *slaps forehead*

Thanks. What oil do you recommend for sealing?

Suave has great light conditioners for co-washes that my hubby uses. And the Suave Daily Clarifying Shampoo is fantastic as well which I use once a week.

For sealing I use Vatika Oil. It's not heavy and doesn't weigh my hair down. There's also lemon in the Vatika, which really tames my new growth. The ingredients are: Coconut Oil, Neem, Brahmi, Fruit extracts of Amla, Bahera and Harar, Kapur Kachri, Henna, Milk, Rosemary Oil, Lemon Oil, TBHQ, Fragrance.

If my ends need it, I'll use a thicker coconut oil just on the ends.

Also after I reach 5 weeks post and I get breakage, I stop using protein and switch to amla oil. I'll use it as a pre-poo soak and it stops it immediately.

HTH!!
