I'm not sure that our hair can ever be that strong. Like someone already said, the less you process the stronger it will be. I do also think that with consistent henna and cassia treatments, proper care and proper nutrition, our hair can become alot stronger. I don't think that the differences will be made overnight but it is possible. When I say proper nutrition I mean adequate protien consumption, a wide variety of fruit and veggies, staying hydrated, limiting sugar and taking the proper supplements especially the ones that add to your overall suphur content. I am on a quest to get my hair stronger and I am going to do bi weekly henna and cassia treatments, keep up my protien consumption and I am tweaking my supplements. I plan on giving myself the rest of the year to try out my methods.

Wow, that's pretty creepy. :look:

My cousin's relaxed hair breaks and snaps, but her new growth doesn't break no matter how much stress you put on it. My natural hair is the same way, it takes a lot of stress to break and snap it. I'm inclined to think that natural hair would be stronger.

OK, get this she uses a supermarket brand dandruff shampoo. We are in the south and I don't know if you lady have a Publix's near by but that is what she uses.

And...she does not use condish! She White so she can get away with this so don't even dare!!!!!

This is me running to Publix's --> :bouncegre

I don't use conditioner all the time. Sometimes I just use Suave Daily Clarifying shampoo and some oil.

I think that relaxed hair needs all of the conditioner it can get. When I was relaxed, I wouldn't dare go without conditioner. That was a ticket to breakage city.

I'm sitting in an office with a colleague of mine, trying with ALL my might not to laugh out loud... Because I can SO relate to checking out the hair to observe its qualities.

When my hair is natural, it will sometimes break mid coil. I think strength has alot to do with the diameter of the hair strands. My strands are fine/medium.

OT:
Kinikakes,
You're BEAUTIFUL in your siggy pic. You look like you were really feeling LOVED. =)

'Kay. Back to finish the report that I'm supposed to be working on...

thats funny you bring this up because i remember when i really young and this white classmate's strand of hair was in my possession:look: . i dont remember how or why but the same thing happened. it was SO strong. it reminded me of a guitar string!!! it was very durable.

OK, So I read this thread and my roommate (hispanic) asked me straighten her hair. Some hair fell on her shirt and I tried to break a strang and thought I was going to cut my finger! It eventually broke but it took about 10 times to get it to snap. She uses heat nearly everyday...

I just spiral curled my friends hair (caucasion, bleached, dyed, doesn't use conditioner) and a piece of her hair snapped easily but not as easy as mine does...and I treat my hair waaaaay better.

I've done this exact same test with my Asian (East Indian) friends hair it was stronger and the strand was like 10x thicker than a strand from my head.

And me being the true LHCF'er I examined the hair (she White by the way) and can I tell you her hair is strong I couldn't even break the hair. Her hair just just snapped back into place no matter how hard I tried. I could even hear it boucing back.

The bub was on the hair so this was a true shedding. I also a ran my finger down the hair and it was very smooth, barely any lumps or bumps. I'm sure this is weird on so many levels but I just could not resist! She clean and I know her very well so I didn't hesitate to examine the hair.

Is it possible for "us" to get hair as strong as this?

MonaRae

:sekret: okay so I am not the only crazy person here. :lachen:

I have done this MANY times with my BF's long hair (white) It is SUPER stong and I can streeeetttcchh it and it never breaks. The elasticity is AMAZING. I just thought it was because he never has had any chemicals in his hair.

My hair has gotten more elastic since I do these treatments, as well. I notice a HUGE difference when I stretch my hair.

After my first treatment, I was like  I've had slacked off since then but I am doing a treatment tomorrow and every other week like clock work till the fall.

Is this woman's hair processed at all?

No she is a natural. Maybe she colors her grey but that would be all. She does apply heat after washing to "straighten" it but that would be all. She admitted to not dolling herself up.

I slacked up at one point, but it did not take me long to realize that this needs to be a regular part of my hair care. Butm you know, I notice after a touchup, my henna effect is less. :look: I think the relaxer ruins it to some degree. My hair is back to being very fine and soft - not as stong.

Do you mean that every time you touch up you have to do a couple of henna treatments to feel the strength again??

BTW, How do you mix your cassia

I've said this before in other threads. Their hair is so much stronger than ours. I know a lot of us don't want to admit it but they definitely have an advantage when it comes to strength, thus retaining length.
I grew up around Indians and other races and You can't snap a strand of their hair with your bare hands if you tried. Their hair is literally like a strand of wire. You won't find broken off pieces of hair in their comb either, just long strands of shed hair.

I agree.

I would love to say our natural hair can be this strong but it is proven that it is weaker.:(

No just one treatment makes me feel pretty "normal" again.

I mix my cassia with plain yogurt and amla oil. Sometimes I use an oz of boiled distilled water to thin it out. I don't use to much water though.

Gotcha, thanks. I am 6 weeks post now and after this henna treatment this weekend I will do cassia. After I relax, I plan on doing a cassia treatment first.

I haven't read through the thread yet but I have discovered that my natural hair is extremely strong as opposed to the relaxed hair on my head. I tried breaking it the other day and it wouldn't:eek: I was so surprised because I am so used to it snapping pretty easily but I tried and tried an nothing happened.

There is def a difference between natural and relaxed hair (plus well-conditioned:) )

Okay, so I'm not alone. I did this several months ago when my coworkers hair fell on my tablet in a meeting. She's a hispanica chica. I closed the hair in the page so it wouldnt be noticed and when I got back to my desk I examined it and stretched it as well. Her hair was extremely strong as well. Very strong and elastic.

Well, a few years ago I did a paper on hair. Black hair ...well let me correct that TEXTURED hair follicles are extremely skinny flat ovals which make them weaker than straighter hair which has more rounded follicles and much weaker than asian types which have almost perfectly round follicles.

So sadly, nontextured hair is stronger in that respect. Also, as was mentioned, the addition of chemicals breaks down the texture even more.

But it's interesting to think about and funny that you examined someone else's hair. LOL

I'm about to ask her! Wait let me hide the hair first!

Thanks for the laugh ma!!! That made my day. I do the same damn thing except I'm obsessed with the back of people's neck hair. Since my nape area is virtually gone and hard and dry and brittle and almost beyond repair, I am obsessed with looking and feeling the nape area of other people's hair.

I'm always asking, what do you do to your nape area to get it like that. Forget the rest of the head, I just want to know what you do to the back!

That was good!

B/c of my examination I am on a quest for thicker stronger hair. I was going to order some Henna from http://www.jamila.com.pk/order.html but I am confused about ordering from the site.

I usually get my Henna from a local Indiana store but I think it is old.

Help!

:lachen: :lachen: I've actually done this before and I know what you mean! I used to have a white roommate. White people's hair is super strong! It's amazing!

Once, I roller set my friend's hair in college. When finished, I tugged at a strand of her hair and I was amazed at how strong it was. I tugged at my strand and it snapped so easily.

My friend and I have similar hair types/textures. We used different products but I believe the main difference was that I used to relax my hair like every 6 weeks while she relaxed her hair every 6 months. Her hair then was almost waistlength while mine was SL. All pre-LHCF.

I believe that stretching helps *a lot* when building up the strength of our strands.

Now, I am constantly tugging at my strands to see how strong they are and if they are getting stronger as I stretch longer.

My derm told me that dandruff poos will make your hair stronger, he specifically recommended Penetrax, which has to be request at Walgreens.

Thanks! I really think there is something to dandruff poo's. One thing my co-worker said is that she has dry scalp, bells went off after that.

I do the same things with my friends and coworkers too! I wish that one strand of my hair was as strong as my coworkers!! One of them whose strands I examined is also white and she tells me that my hair strand is thicker(which is true when I am a few weeks post relaxer) but overall her strand seemed thicker overall basically cause she doesn't have any chemicals in her hair..well I take that back..yes she does she uses color. I wish I had a microscope cause I would just be plucking peoples head hairs and examining it under the microscope just to compare cuticle layers and such:lol:
