So I was in line at Filene's overheard someone being called Miss Celie

Look like Babyleaf's secret is out for serious bargains...
I'm thinking about heading that way too! The union square location is just so so.

Off topic.....The Filene's basement in queens is one of my favorite places to shop in nyc...I thought it is sort of a secret...guess not...I have found some serious bargains in this location. I don't live in queens anymore and whenever I go I also stop by the arby's sown the street...it is the only one I know in nyc. Love, love, love arby's....lol

back to topic....that is a shame how as young women of we fall in social norms..even when they are bad for us...don't worry...mis chewed up ends will be chewed up for the rest of her life...it was very nice of you to give positive reinforment to the natural girl. I am sure it made her feel good.
You're talking about my hood lol.The location in Queens is super close to my house,, that's how I knew about it. Maybe I should take my picture down at this point :sekret:

Did you hear about how that Arbys got crashed into by a driver who was high on pot? He actually killed someone. The place was closed for a few months.

Thank you for that story. My 13 yo DD is being teased about her hair. She is natural and is currently wearing twists.

She goes to an afterschool program and hasn't been removing her winter hat because she fears the other kids will tease her. In addition, my mother told me that my great aunt said her hair was ugly at church on Sunday. I'm not sure if my daughter heard her or not. Overall, the family is not supportive of natural hair.

This really saddens me. We are poisoned to think that our natural hair just doesn't measure up. I can't offer any advice, but I am just thankful for the two boys I have, because if I had any girls, relaxer would not be an option for them until they were out of my home, paying their own bills, and making their own decisions. Hopefully, by that time, they would be above the peer pressure and would learn to love and appreciate what makes Black women so unique.

Not only was the girl with the relaxed head out of line, but what really disgust me is calling the natural hair girl Ceily, and in front of customers! Especially knowing white customers are hearing this if you heard this standing in line! It's embarrassing to say the least! Hell I wish my natural hair was as thick as Ceily's!

But of course it makes other customer's wonder what kind of enviroment is this?:wallbash:

Actually, I consider the comment about Ceily a huge compliment!

When I was natural, the most ignorant comments usually came from other black people. I'm minding my own business and someone has the nerve to say something horrible about my hair. People need to be careful b/c one might catch a natural on a bad day and, well, something might happen. I'm just saying.

Yeah, well this is the same Filenes where the workers staffing the dressing room use the n-word with wild abandon, in front/ in earshot of customers of all races, some of whom are tourists. And the managers act like it's not a big deal - which we all know it would be WWIII if these were white employees saying "n----er" and calling folk "miss celie" in front of [black] customers.

Someone told my dh that I walk around looking like a slave :lachen:

I can't even fathom that type of ignorance.
WTH????? We know that is some kinda ignoramous talk. :spinning::spinning:

Its a trip that due to societal conditioning we really could simply straighten our hair and be considered a knockout in two and two by the majority. :lachen: I say screw them. I'm not conventional or typical so I'll stay nappy and happy!

I think someone should enlighten Filene's corporate office about this locations disrespectful and unprofessional mannerism. I wish we had Filene's in Southern California. I love shopping there in DC off Wisconsin.

I hear you. One of my cousins told me that I look like Harriet Tubman. I'm like, I'll take that as a compliment. Harriet Tubman will always be more of a recognized name than yours will ever be.

With women like that it's always something. They ridicule those of us who choose to keep our hair natural and try to shame us into relaxing because they think we look ridiculous. But a relaxed sister with long, beautiful hair better watch out around these hateful *****s!

That's when the REAL hate begins!

:wallbash::ohwell: and thats why I get major attitude with grown folks when they comment about my hair. They should KNOW better.

I would report that girl for being unprofessional!

It's sad how certain people can be. They love making others feel bad. I made a thread about a similar situation. I was being harassed at my school by people telling me negatives about my hair when it's dang near BSL and is in good condition and there's is in a much more damaged condition. It's discouraging at times, but I just have to remind myself that I can't please everyone all the time.

I would but the thing is the manager was right behind them. I know this because they had to void something and she came over, typed something in, and approved the void. She was the one behind them organizing stuff. So she was overhearing everything (really only a few feet away), and didn't seem to mind.

I must've missed that one. Sorry to hear that. I agree that we can't please everyone. I don't mind others not wanting to do their hair like mine, etc. BUT the ridiculing thing needs to stop. Really.
