Shrinkage

How can I keep my hair moistured without it shrinking?

At the moment I baggy and do braidouts every day. If I don't my hair is like a shrunken tangled desert.

I am 17 months into my natural hair journey since I did a major BC. And my hair is only 4-5 inches long as I've had 2 major setbacks due to not DC'ing at all for the first half of my journey until (I read The Science of Black Hair book and figured that my hair needed more moisture, so I started deep conditioning twice a week to correct my moisture/protein balance with Giovanni Smooth as Silk Deeper Moisture Conditioner as was in her recommendation list of moisturizing deep conditioners as my hair was breaking, brittle, hard and extremely dry even with baggying and doing the LOC Method etc) and my hair eventually improved.

Then recently discovering my hair does not like the Holland & Barret double strength Aloe Vera Gel (again made my hair dry) I had mixed into my shea butter mix which I've been using for the past year. It's not too keen on Glycerin either me thinks as my hair is dry whenever I use it in a product.

I also believe my hair is protein sensitive. I dunno, I am just so confused with my natural hair maybe I should just get a retro curl activator I used to use when I had a curly perm back in the day lol & embrace a curly twa and let it be.

Thanks in advance

I don't like baggying especially if you have fine or fragile hair it leads to over moisturisation and breakage.

Gels contain a lot of protein which can lead to protein overload. And many women like myself do not like glycerin because it acts like a protein and can draw out moisture.

I think you need protein in your life but you have to figure out whether you need a mild (Aubrey GBP) or medium protein treatment (Komaza, Aphogee) Always follow your protein treatments with a real DC and not a DC with protein to avoid protein overload.

You have to also gauge your hair in deciding whether to do your protein treatments twice a month, once a month or every three months. I do my treatments at least twice a month.

I also do not care for protein leave ins, however, I have been sneaking them into my routine especially on the weeks that I do a DC only and using them diligently to prevent protein overload.

Shrinkage comes with the territory when hair is dry which is why you should always keep your hair stretched to keep tangles at bay.

I shaved in May 2014, my hair right now is collarbone stretched and inching towards shoulder length. I alternate between roller sets, wigs and big braids (no extensions) under a hair scarf. You just have to be patient to see the length and the hang time which for many women comes between years 2 to 5 years depending on their hair texture.

I think you may need to tweak your routine. And sometimes too much manipulation and steps can cause more problems for your hair.

Hey thank you for your helpful reply Almond Eyes I appreciate it. Yes I tried the Aubrey's GBP a couple of weeks back because everyone was raving how good it was so just had to buy it lol, but I found it dried my hair but I must admit I didn't do a deep conditioning afterwards as I was under the impression that it was supposed to balance moisture/protein in the hair, so maybe that is why it was a little dry after. I aslo believe that the Giovanni Smooth as Silk Deeper Moisture Conditioner has a little protein in it.

Since going natural I never knew my hair to be so dry dry dry lol. To be honest I don't think my hair could ever become overloaded with moisture it needs a lot.

Also my hair only shrinks when it is wet. Hence the problem with applying moisture

Most welcome.

I used the Aubrey's GBP early in the year as a deep conditioner and my hair got very hard and stiff because I also did not follow up with a real Moisturizing Conditioner. After a second run I realized I needed to read the ingredients on the labels of my conditioners and not just fall for the titles.

There are many moisturizing conditioners on the market with no proteins, Aubrey Organics has one. I like Aussie Moist and Trader Joe's Nourish Conditioners but some women complain that it has a ton of slip but causes dryness later if not washed out properly which is why I never recommend conditioners as leave ins.

Yes, hair can become overloaded with moisture which is why you need protein in your life but how much really depends on your hair needs. But for sure if your hair is fine then it needs it a lot more than just once in a while. And remember our hair tends to be high maintenance so the everyday styling and twisting /braiding even grabbing the hair to moisturize especially when your hair is short or medium short causes tension on the hair which can lead to breakage so protein fortifies those strands. But if you are protein sensitive just don't over do it. Strike the balance. As you get to know your hair better your hair will let you know.

A good moisturiser leave in that has no glycerin or protein is Curl Prep Sweet Buttah. But again I say also try to sneak in a bit of protein leave ins (I like Komaza Shea Butter they have a light protein) every now and then to fortify your hair strands. If you believe your are protein sensitive you may only need a mild protein once every two months.

Your hair shrinks when it is wet, wow how much water are you putting in your hair when I am in the shower and my hair is drenched my hair actually swells and hangs and shrinks when it is dry. My hair shrinks when it is wet only when I spritz water on my style or hair.

Stretching is the best thing for afro textured hair anyhow, unless you do wash and goes and unless you have a thicker hair type you can end up with a lot of single stranded knots.

Lol yes shrinks when I wash it & shrinks when I spritz it or add any water based moisturizer.

What is your hair length Almond Eyes? I think mine shrinks when wet because it is quite short, do you think once I reach say APL it will do the opposite because of the weight & length?

When I deep condition with the Aubrey's GBP I will defo follow up with a good moisturizing deep conditioner. What do you think about the Giovanni Smooth as Silk Deeper Moisture Conditioner as a deep conditioner?

Many thanks for your reply /help :)

I shaved my hair last May. My set back occurred in February because I has stopped using protein and my hair was over moisturised but I corrected that shortly. I also had to figure out the best moisturising system for my hair and once I got that on track my hair has been blossoming so I would say my hair is about four to six inches. And I did some trimming some months back so all is on track.

The shrinkage will always be there for our hair but in terms of hanging more it depends on your hair texture and the weight of your hair. Again I can't say that at APL your hair will hang more or shrink less. I met a woman in my neighborhood and her natural shoulder length hair that is fine is actually stretched to waist length. So perhaps that can help. She said that took her four years to grow. And yes her hair is fabulous.

I do not use Giovanni but I have heard good things about it, just look at the ingredients if you see certain words like hydrolysed wheat protein, soy protein, keratin, panethol those are words that means it has protein. Since the print can be hard to read on the bottles, google the ingredients list to see them up close better.

Lol ain't it funny you had moisture overload and I had protein overload.

And I big chopped in March last year 2014. I do believe that the Giovanni does have a little protein in it so I guess my hair is getting some.

Thank you for making things clear I appreciate it.

Ps I am still trying to figure what works for my hair moisture wise. Can you please tell what the moisturizing system you finally found that works for you if you don't mind?

Regards Michelle :)

@snookes my hair used to shrink when I washed it. Since I've changed my technique it no longer does this. I never used to wash my hair in sections, just one mass. I was also inadvertently using products with ingredients that were probably drying out my hair or causing build up over time. I think these two thing have a lot to do with the shrinkage issue when hair is soaking wet.

Hey thanks for that AbsyBlvd. What is your new technique? Do you now wash your hair in sections? Unfortunately my hair is too short to go into sections :(

I also clarify my hair once a month and Co wash weekly with Giovanni smooth as silk conditioner.

@snookes It's by no means new but everything was new to me:look:. When I started doing maximum hydration method in September last yr, my whole regimen/ techniques changed.

I started finger detangling 100%. I use a rat tail to part, but that's it. I started using clay to cleanse and condition my hair. I stopped using heat. I began washing my hair in the shower. I sometimes just let my hair hang loose in the shower but as it grows, clipping it up in 4 sections and working on each section is practical.

When I'm not wigging it, I wear wash and goes. My main washing regimen now is water rinse, clay masque/ rinse, oil rinse and diluted Kinky Curly gel. Shingling is my bestie.

I finger detangle which has helped a lot especially as my hair has grown. Initially I was against finger combing but I realized that I was addicted to the comb. Having fine hair and using my fingers has really helped. But you have to know how to do it properly to remove shed hairs.

I also wash in sections. I use ouches goodies bands for my sections.

I use warm water when washing my hair but not overly warm that my body feels uncomfortable.

I only ever sleep in big braided sections.

When I say moisturisation routine, I mean that everyday or every other day I use a spray bottle of warm water but I do not make my hair sopping wet, I then use curl prep sweet buttah to soften out my hair, I will also use komaza shea butter lotion if my hair needs some protein love but I will concentrate on my ends, some olive oil and raw shea butter. You can do this at night, under a wig or hair scarf (cap). I do use sometimes castor oil on the ends when the braid is done. I also let my hair breathe a bit I don't just allow my hair to have all those products and use a hair scarf or wig immediately.

I do a weekly washing session. I avoid doing a washing session everyday because my hair is fine and while my hair loves water the damage from the shower head and then manipulating my hair to prepare it for big braids causes breakage.

Also, lastly I no longer use extension braids. I haven't used it at all. I have fine and hi po hair and I find that in the past when I used extension braids, somehow it spoilt my cuticles and made my hair drier so my only option was to cut my hair because of the damage done by over braiding and not using treatments to secure my hair. With extension braids no amount of moisture routine worked for me and I also again was ignorant about protein which I needed to use because extensions and braiding stresses the hair. This time around I am not messing with extension braids.

I think many women who use extension braiding as their primary hairstyle and never give their own hair a break may find out like I did a few times like heat damage that can occur and lead naturals to transition from that I had to transition from the braid damage.

Well you can always stretch your hair prior to styling.
I have shrinkage too, but I wash, condition, protein or moisture dc (I alternate protein every other week and follow that up with a moisture dc) then put in my water based leave-in and seal with a butter.
I then stretch with magnetic rollers and sit under the hooded dryer or air dry over night.
The next day I undo the rollers and separate. At this point it looks like a blowout.
Then I style adding as needed more water based leave-in and seal with a butter on my ends.

Have you considered getting your hair consultation with komaza care with the phone discussion?
I have been natural for many years and I got one and it's helpful.

No I have never heard of Komaza care what is it a product line? I live in the UK would it be variable do you think, are they the ones you send a few hairs for hair type analysis I've been hearing about?

Ps doesn't the water based leave ins cause your hair to shrink, they do to mine.

Thanks for sharing that very insightful.

I dunno but water makes my hair hard maybe I should start using bottled water eh

How do you do a oil rinse? And what clay masque do you use? Sounds nice can you do a deep condition with the masque?

After I rinse out my clay, I apply grapeseed oil to my length and add sunflower oil to my ends. I usually leave this on while I wash and then I'll lightly rinse (or rather pass my head under the shower a few times) before getting out.

I know you can buy some clay masques readymade e.g Terranssentials (sp) or something like that. I make my own using a mix of calcium bentonite (aztec healing clay) and rhassoul clay. I put a couple scoops/ spoons of both in an applicator bottle. Add enough water to make 14-16oz (simple version). I sometimes add a dash of apple cider vinegar (the one with the mother). I also add other goodies my hair likes (a teaspoon or less of silk amino acids and sometimes, hibiscus tea/ powder etc).

I saturate my hair with the mix, applying in small sections from root to tip. The mix weighs down my hair and defines my coils. It cleanses conditions and allows my hair to really soak up some water, in turn moisturising my hair (I have a shower filter for this London hard water).

I will occasionally use protein and moisture DC as necessary. Especially on my fine sections.

Hey your in the UK too yay :) I use sunflower oil sometimes too & I quite like it.

I have used the Shea moisture purification masque and that was nice, but your mix sounds better.

I will certainly give the oil rinsing a go. And look into clay hair benefits.

Thanks for that nice one :)

Hey:hiya:
:)No worries. I've used the purification mask too- I like it but I prefer my clay mix. It leaves my hair feeling clean and conditioned, not coated like the purification mask.

I also wanted to add to try and avoid protein treatments with cones. I have experimented with several protein treatments with cones and without and my hair feels stronger with protein treatments that do not contain cones. And my hair also likes protein treatments done on dry hair as opposed to wet hair after shampooing.

Yes I avoid cones like the plague lol. Gonna try a deep condition on dry hair one time see how it goes.

Yes komaza care has the "hair analysis ".
If I only use a quarter sized amount for my entire section (which is usually in 4 sections) & focus on my ends my hair doesn't really shrink that much.
I don't mind my shrinkage though.

I ONLY wear my hair in stretched styles. This keeps the tangles and knots at bay. I like to put in my leave-in and seal then dry in rollers to stretch then I style. Hth

It's a big challenge to find good deep conditioners without cones, any suggestions besides Aubrey Organics, their moisturizing conditioner tends to leave a residue on my hair and has a terrible smell.

Naturelle Grow does some interesting cone-free DCs. I havent tried any because she doesn't ship to the UK but I would love to try her protein-free Marshmallow Root DC. I know it's available through Etsy.
