For me, it doesn't matter whether someone's hair is longer or shorter than mine. What matters is that it looks healthy, and that what they say about haircare makes sense to me. I've asked questions of ladies with all hair lengths and hair types, and also have given compliments to ladies with all lengths and hair types.
I agree w/this too. Although I do tend to gravitate towards the ladies who have hair types similar to mine, because learning how to manage my natural hair is apart of my journey too. I don't know if it's hair anorexia or what, but I'm hardly even phased by long hair anymore. Instead, I'm more impressed by shine, thickness, texture, and healthy ends. If the hair is long too, great. But long hair alone doesn't really move me anymore.:ohwell:

i see this too, but more so with people with healthy long hair. I've noticed that there has been some long haired ladies whos hair isn't a model of health that dont get acknowledged as much as the ladies with thick shiny strong looking long hair.

For me, i love just about everyone on here. there is so much to learn, and just about everybody has something to offer. I tend to admire healthier heads (long or short), and those with long hair that seemed to have started with little to nothing (makes me feel like i can do it too), and DIYers.

Even if i see someone with chewed up, nasty, breaking all the rules, bald, brittled, dirty, abused-and-they-dont-care, don king with a bad weave on crack hair... i love them too... for they teach me what NOT to do!:look:

Well when I first joined I couldn't get over the ladies with THICK HEALTHY LONG hair, and was stalking the fotkis and reggies trying to find out how, after a bit though I started paying attention to the ladies with THICK HEALTHY hair period.
Since i'm natural (about to be texlaxed) I would search out ladies who are successfully doing what I want, ie colour, texlax, braid, weave etc but I have honestly stopped looking at avatars so I get shocked when I see someone who's hair was shorter and or/ damaged when I joined now at APL or with nice thick hair :) and i feel good and proud like I was a witness to a great event

Im a bit biased becuz I do have short hair. So sometimes I feel like I get the 'what could she know' treatment.

Whereas someone who has long hair could suggest that everyone start washing their hair w/ soap shavings, and everyone will jump on the bandwagon cuz hey, she has long hair!!!

But we typically follow after those who have what we want. :) thats true in hair, weight, skin, money, life, personal achievements, etc. So its a typical, natural reaction.

Im more of a health person, myself. I dont really care how long your hair is. But if you have a head of HEALTHY hair, then Im all in. For me health beats out length every day and twice on Sundays. :yep:

I agree with your post because prior to getting married (4 years ago) I always rocked a short do, and was proud of it! I feel like yeah you can have long hair but at the sound of wind will it start falling? Health to me is what is important, short or long.

I do see how one could get more love due to the length of their hair because I guess for years we as african american women have been taught that having long hair is like being light skinned back in the day (you become the ish). Which it really should be all about healthy tresses and if you decide to let your hair grow in the process of maintaining a healthly state then good, if you decide to keep it cut then great also. But because your healthy, that is what matters.

There are some short haired ladies on there that make me want to cut all my ish off and get it pimpin again! But at my husbands request, I won't for while, as he requested me to grow my hair out when we got married, so I did.

I had to laugh reading your third statment because it is the truth (a sad one, but true).

The question I ask myself all the time when it comes to my hair is "if I had to cut it ALL off like rock a bald fade, would my life be over?" If it would then I need to rock a bald fade!

I don't necessarily have a problem with it. A person with long hair has what most of us want, we are drawn to them and want to learn as much as possible from them so that we can have long hair too:)

I agree with that:yep: !

I show love to people that have my similar texture and have made significant progess going from SL to BSL, while maintaining overall health. I also show love to anyone with thick hair at any length. I may not always leave a comment in their fotki but I will there #1 stalker:look: :sekret:  .

ITA. Because I usually couldn't get hair past the base of my neck (for so many years), when I found LHCF (I was between SL and APL) I was really drawn to the ladies with the really long hair: BSL, WL because that's what I wanted. And like everyone else has been saying, I wanted to know what they did to get it there. I love all hair but I'm drawn to the ladies that have the same hair type as mine and have the length and health that I want to have b/c it speaks to me more.

Oh thanks Story, Sistaslick, Vwvixxen, and Dyslla:D Ya'll are too sweet! Just made my day from a rough, long night at work...thanks again;)

Everyone on here is my inspiration because we are all here for one main reason and that is to learn how to take better care our ourselves and our hair and to show others that it can be done. Whether we started out short or long we are here learning about how to better ourselves. Healthy hair beats out length any day IMO

I must admit I do myself pay alot of attention to the females that have pictures of their journey from short and/or damaged hair to longer, healthier hair. It is very encouraging for me to see someone get to where I am trying to go.

I want to own a business one day soon and I am CONSTANTLY out reading stories of people who started on a shoestring buget and obtained their goal of owning their own business. It's how I get my inspiration. :)

The site is called LONG HAIR CARE........
Besides I thought thats what many if not most people were here for....who better to learn how to achieve long locks from than someone with long hair?????

Because this is a long hair care forum and we all ultimately are seeking longer, healthier hair, I think that it's only natural that we gravitate towards the ladies who have achieve this.

However, I have to admit that I am much more impressed with ladies--particularly those with fine and/or thin hair like myself--who have achieved amazing heights. I tend to be more enthusiastic and inspired by women who have faced great challenges and overcome them.

I tend not to be as impressed with the ladies who have always had long hair or have the tendency to reach great lengths without much effort.

I do also notice that the women who are shown love tend to be those who either give love back; or, mostly the ladies who have fotki's and maintain those overtime, providing regular and frequent updates.

These are my views only... ;)

I do this also. but I also pay attention to those who just have thick healthy looking hair. There is one poster her hair isn't long but it looked beautiful and healthy, I just had to tell her about it:lol:

When I joined I would ask quesions of those with long hair because that was my goal. I could grow it but I did not know how to take care of it. So I asked those who had experience with long hair and were successful in keeping it healthy. Who better to ask than those who deal with it everyday? To me it is like why would a person ask parenting tips from someone who does not have a child? The one with experience may be better able to help.

It does not really matter to me if the growing out process happened while they were on this board or not. The processes are usually the same-
minimize damage.

This is so true!

Im really glad you posted this. I hear the opposite a lot on this board. Some of the women who came to the board with long hair get kinda discredited because their growing out process may have happened sooner.

For me, my damage happened very early on. At age 10 or 11, I thought it was ok to go to swimming camp and blow dry my hair every day. Chlorine+sun+blowdrying incorrectly= extremely damaged hair. Unfortunately, I just dont have any pictures of my hair at that stage.

My mom, knowing she had no idea what to do, saved up her money and sent me to the salon weekly (which exposed me to deep conditioning, better perms and processes). I went to salons amost every week from that age through college until 2006.

So my hair progress now is the result of adopting some healthy hair habits very early on and using them for decades. I dont have good genes- my mothers hair never made it past shoulder, my dad is thinning, my brother is bald. And on either side of my family, not one person has EVER had long hair.

So, I just want people to keep in mind that not everyone on the board that has long hair has good genes or photos of their starting point. Some of us just may have had an earlier start and just might actually have something to contribute. Just my humble opinion:)

Very well said. My hair was long when I came here because I've been into healthy hair practices long before any hair boards. I've done loads of research for years and years (online, books, classes, I soaked up anything and everything to do with hair care) so it's always been a work in progress for me. None of it can compare to how much I've learned here and other boards and that's the truth. I don't have pics of my hair at it's worst stage either (not online at least) but I've been putting in work for a long time to get here and I'd hate to be dismissed just because I came here with long hair. It was not handed to me on a silver platter.

Good points from both Macherie and from Pokahontas :yep:

I don't think that popularity because your hair is long, or the lack thereof because it isn't should even be an issue. We all are here b/c we have something in common. I don't frequent this board so that I can say I have 20,000 friends online. I come here b/c I'm putting in work for a goal and I know I can get good tips and insight here. The bonds formed with the ladies on here is just a bonus.

*I might be taking it to another level, but it's how I feel* :)

So true. My regimen is the same thing that I've been doing since the 8th grade, except for when I go on product benders. Even when I traumatized my hair in high school, going back to frequent washing, deep conditioning, roller-sets/protective styling and no heat always turned my hair around.

When I found my first hair board, it was a gold mine to me because I finally found other women of color who were doing the same things that I was doing. I could talk about my theories and discoveries without being told "Black people don't . . . " It was more about good practices than good genes. It was so liberating to not have people dismiss what you say out of hand.

The only problem with the people who go from short to long, is that they give me a serious case of "hair anorexia". Sometimes I want to cut my hair and start over.

I totally think that people are shown more love on the haircare forum if their hair is long.

I for one have not fallen into the trap of only responding to those who have long hair, because to me, if your hair isn't full or healthy looking, I could care less how long it is.

I like rags to riches hair. I also like seeing someone hair grows while my hair is growing. It's like we are doing it together.

I also know this forum is called Long hair care but the women with long hair words are not made of gold. I still love y'all though.

If me and someone else where trying to start to separate business, that person might find out something about my business that i may not know and could help me along the way but because they are starting out like me I shouldn't listen to them. I have the attitude, what could they know they have never own a business.

I also have seen women on here with long healthy hair that took them way to long to get there because they had made so many mistake going from one product to another.

For me it's not all about having long hair it's about consistence. If i see you are consistent in your hair care game Then that shows me you already know your hair. You are dedicated in being consistent.

I could go on but I'm being lazy right now:lol: but y'all get my point.

Right!!! Gotta love those rags to riches hair stories!!!

Basically, there's just two different types of "love". The already long haired ladies more people feel admiration for, like people have hair idols in people like Amerie and Aaliyah for instance. The 'rags to riches' ladies provide that inspiration, being able to relate at a certain stage and see how long it took them to get to their present point and see what they did. Makes you be able to set goal lines in your journey and feel confident you can make it there because you witnessed so and so do it.

I think some long-haired ladies choose which type they want to be, others, like Macherie said, perhaps their struggles happened and they overcame them long before the internet even existed.

I'll never have a fotki, but if I can I'll post progression points next to each other in my siggy when I make my BSL goal to chronicle how long it took, I'd like to be an inspiration.

Hello,
I admit when I first came here, I paid extra attention to posts by healthy haired folks. Then I found out about all the other forums. all hell broke loose then.

Because of lack of privacy where I work, I change my settings to NOT show siggy pics, avatars and images (It's not cool when a superior walks by and spots a pic of one of you guys...IN YOUR BRA:lol:

The good thing is, the setting change forces me to pay attention to what the poster says and not how long their hair is or how pretty they are. We have some really intelligent ladies on the board and I thoroughly enjoy reading these posts. Which totally defeats the purpose of why I originally joined here, which was to grow ma damn hair:mad: Doesn't change the fact that I love being here surrounded by you all:p Peace.
I've done that. The board seems less cluttered with the pictures off. I also know exactly what you mean about the pic and being at work. I had a co-worker in my office the other day. She kept looking at my other computer. I noticed it but didn't turn to look. When she left I glanced over and there it was! One of ya'll naked showing WL hair. :ohwell: I think I'll turn them off again now. :)

My hair is long but I don't do much to it, I don't have a bangin routine, I don't try new things, and I use heat:eek: so I don't get much love

THe people I see with long hair that get lots of attention are the ones that have really grown their hair out while here and have great tips to help improve length or good no heat options. Also I think the people that are natural and long get more love.

Well, I love your hair and look forward to your updated siggy pictures everyday. You have beautiful hair.:p

I have to say that what encourages me the most is when women who have long hair before the boards, come on these boards and are not ashamed or afraid to ask for help with their hair. They were on the right track, but just needed some additional help to achieve even greater health and length.

We are on this board to get our hair to its optimal health and length, so when I see their hair long when they join, that reminds me of why I'm here and where I desire to be and that I can get there with hard work and determination.

I applaud you (macharieamor, Pokahontas, La Flaca, to name a few) that you have come here and although your hair was long when you got here, the health and the beauty of your hair over the time I've been here, has truly blessed me.
