Shedding/Breakage (Any advice or suggestions needed)

Hey Girls,
I am starting to get seriously worried :perplexed .I wash my hair every week alternating between protein and moisture. My hair really likes protein so that has been working fine with me. My hair has been growing and looking so darn healthy lately.

Well I am on a dance team and we had a production this weekend, so it's been about a week and some days since my last wash. Not to mention I have HORRIBLE build-up but i just DIDN'T have the time to wash.

Anyhow, I am experiencing some horrible breakage and shedding. I did aphogee last week (I always do aphogee a week after my last relaxer) but 2 or 3 days ago the breakage started. So my questions to you ladies is this: Do you think that I should  :
1. Clarify, light protein, and mask?
2. Moisture poo and conditioner ( no protein)?
3. Use my protein poo/conditioner?
4. Clarify and mask (with a dab of protein in it)?

Please tell me what you think. I wash tomorrow and I would REALLY appreciate ANY feedback!

I had this problem after my last touchup.

I did an Emergencee treatment about a week after the touchup, but brakage started after that.

I did a deep condition the same day as the emergencee treatment (Miss Key 10 en 1) but my hair was still not back to normal.

Then a few days later, I shampooed and conditioned (also used Porosity Control Corrector) and also I did another deep condition with Emergencia and 10 en 1 mixed and I was finally back to normal.

I was not shedding much, just a more breakage than normal. I think mine was because my hair's moisture levels needed some help getting back in order.

Tonight (3 days later) I shampooed and Deep condtioned and still everything seems fine.

You may need a moisturizing deep conditioning, as well.

Thank you SOOOO much for the fast feedback. So are you ladies saying I should use only a moisturizing shampoo and (deep)conditioner?

advice i have gotten from this board and other haircare boards is it better to start with moisture to resolve your hair problems than protein. so i would definitely say start with moisturizing poo and con. Neutrogena triple moisture poo and conditioner is really good!

ITA with the others, you should err on the side of moisture. :yep: I also think that you should clarify to remove some of the buildup. If your hair has product buildip on it, it won't be able to absorb and benefit from any of the moisture you are giving it. Your moisturizing efforts will do no good, and anything you apply to it will just sit there on the strands. I would clarify and follow that up with a moisturizing deep conditioner. Don't use any protein until your hair indicates the need for more-- not when your calendar does.

ThankYou everybody!!!

Sistaslick, would you personally recommend that I clarify (washing once w/ a clarifying poo then procede to deep conditioner) or clarify,THEN wash with a moisture poo?
I want to get all this gunk out of my hair and don't want to reload it back in contradicting the clarifying poo.

mane n tail helped me when my hair was shedding alot. i added evoo to the conditioner for extra softness. it can also be left in as a leave-in. on my final rinse i leave a little in.

When I see breakage I up the moisture. I would use a acv rinse to remove build up and then use a moisturizing treatment w/ heat. Use a moisturizing leave in and follow that with a moisturizing cream once the hair is dry. Also when I see breakage I go back to moisturizing twice a day until I can get it under control.

Well for me, I don't like to follow up clarifying with another shampoo stage. It turns out to be way too much useless manipulation on my wet hair that has already been stripped of its moisture and protective oil layers. For me, going right into the deep conditioning stage serves me better than the two back to back shampoo stages because you get your moisture and nourishment back during the deep conditioning. But there is no right or wrong way to do it girl! It depends on what you think your hair needs at the time, and for me, the less manipulation the better.:D

SimplyCee how does one do a ACV rinse?

I take an old, cleaned up juice bottle (64 oz) pour 1/4 cup of apple cidar vinegar (acv) into it then add distilled water until the bottle is filled. I shake it up and pour over my hair after washing making sure to get my scalp really good.

I quit using clarifying shampoo when I started using this. It cleans off the build up without stripping my hair. I always do this after shampooing and before conditioning to get the best results.

I've been told that organic acv works better than what you find in the grocery store. I have yet to test that theory. ACV rinses have become a regular part of my routine at least bi weekly to monthly. Since it is not stripping or drying I do it more frequently than when I would use a clarifying shampoo.

In your case I would poo with a moisturizing shampoo, acv rinse and follow with a thick, creamy conditioner with heat for at least 20 mins. Let me know how this works for you.

I just wanted to update yall on my situation.
I washed with NTM, con'd with NTM mixed with Nexxus Humectress, and for a leave-in I used Rusk Smoother mixed with organic jojoba oil. Not only did it make my hair look like I stepped out of the salon it stopped the shedding/breakage! :yay:  Yaaay. Thank you ladies so much for telling me about balancing out my moisture. My first thought was to use my protein poo/con. Thanks so much! *hugs to all*

Hey MizaniMami,
I'm glad that i saw this thread.
I use Motions Moisturizing Shampoo, and the Mane N Tail conditioner. Is that enough Moisture there? Someone suggest that Neutrogena one and Humectress.. what color bottle is that in, cos those girls at my hairstore dont know jack about their products.
Next.. I use the ORS deep penetrating pak.. Is that for moisture or protein or both?

And cant I just buy a clarifier at the bss?

Well they don't sell NTM at my BSS. And ORS I think the 3rd or 4th ingredient is a protein ( this one the one I saw So I would classify that as a protein conditioner. The NTM I used was this one with the matching shampoo.

Yes you can buy a clarifier from the d/s. I used Aveda Detox for my first lather and followed with the NTM. But Alberto V05 Kiwi Lime and Squeeze is just as good and it's only 89 cents from Krogers (pic)

When I conditioned I left it on for 40 minutes with a heat cap. I hope that helps you out. And don't forget to update us on your situation.

Trini, is this the motions shampoo you are using? If so I wouldn't use it for purely moisture. Here are the ingredients:
Water Aqua , Sodium Lauryl Sulfate , Cocamidopropyl Betaine , PPG-5-Ceteth-10 Phosphate , Disodium Cocoamphodipropionate , PEG-30 Glyceryl Cocoate , Hydrolyzed Keratin , Hydrolyzed Silk , Ocotrimonium Chloride , Glycol Distearate , Sodium C14-17 Alkyl Sec Sulfonate , Propylene Glycol , PEG-120 Methyl Glucose Dioleate , PEG-12 Dimethicone , Polyquaternium-10 , Citric Acid , Methylparaben , Propylparaben , Diazolidinyl Urea , Benzyl Salicylate , Linalool , Fragrance Parfum

The Bolded/Underlines ones are proteins.

So therefore, you have to do a pre-poo with an oil or something. Then a moisturizing shampoo, then a clarifying shampoo/rinse (dollar store? called what?) and then a moisturizing conditioner for a treatment and then rinse the hair out with water?

Trini, I haven't did a pre-poo in about 3 mos:perplexed
If I were you I would pre-poo overnight, Clarify ( I like V05 Kiwi Lime & Squeeze) for the first lather (ONLY if you have buildup, don't do this every wash),Use a moisture poo for the second, Conditioner ( with heat for about 20-an hour), Leave-in, and then style like you usually do.

My sisters hair is shedding and breaking alot.

I don't have any expensive moisturizing conditioners, so I'm wondering will VO5 strawberry con mixed with evoo and honey do the trick. What do yall think?

Inana04, I think that should be fine.

So Motions has protein so it isnt really a moisture based Shampoo.. Lord help me at the hair store tomorrow *shakes head*

This is going to be a wild money weekend. I think I'm going to end up going by the hairdresser for a treatment and a trim, cos I havent had any luck finding someone to braid my hair :(

I'm hitting the streets for products tomorrow y'all

You need to erase MNT from your hair for a while, it is a protein leave in. i've used it for 6 months straight but its obviousely built up on my hair. as i was gettin breake a few days ago. MNT makes your hair feel strong n stiff at times, u need to soften up your hair
