Screamed at a Stylist Today

I'm transitioning and plan to for 2 years. I'm 1 year and 2 months post now. I went to the salon to get braids and she insisted on blowing it out so it would be easier to part my hair. I already doused my head in coconut oil and had 2 of those expensive bone combs with me - all to make the process easier for them and she still wanted to blowdry my hair. After a 3 minute argument, I agreed to light blow drying. It was not light. Anyway, in the course of blowdrying she took out a pair of scissors and I was like, WTF are you doing? She said I was already mostly natural at the nape and I might as well cut off the relaxed ends. I told her NO plus if you cut the relaxed ends from the nape, the crown and front will look awkward and she said, no problem, I'll cut off all the relaxed ends. WHAT?:brucelee:. I came in for braids and this crazy woman is trying to BC me. I said no twice and she still insisted so I screamed NO very loudly and she left it alone. Why do stylists feel this incessant and relentless need to always cut or trim hair and insist on cutting hair that the owner has very specifically said she doesn't want to cut. I got in my braids but I've decided after I take this out, I will be wigging it for the rest of my transition. Just needed someone to rant to. Rant over.

Wow! I would've done the exact same thing. ButI probably would've said other vulgar things. That's why I don't go to salons. The only person I let touch my hair is my mom. And she hasn't done my hair in 2 1/2 years.

I commend you! You were right to loudly declare what you didn't want her to do! I hear too many horror stories from ladies on this board about their stylists cutting their hair off when they specifically asked them not to. If I used to still go to salons, I wouldn't have even debated with her...I would've got up off of that chair and left. If I go to a salon I expect to get the services I requested. You shouldn't leave a salon feeling depressed or all stressed out about your hair.

I'm mad she even pulled out the scissors to cut your hair without consulting you first.

I agree with Charz, I would've gotten up and left. There are too many other stylists available and willing to do what I ask them to do.

She's out of her mind. How is she gonna insist on BCing you after you said no AND after she blew out your hair (how much you want to bet she would have cut natural hair too)??? I'm glad you stood your ground, I would have left.

I commend you for speaking up (LOUDLY) as well!

I too had a stylist insist on giving me a trim after I clearly went in there for a wash, blow dry and flat iron. She insisted after I told her no thanks three times. Then she went on trying to school me on split ends and what will happen to my hair without a trim. Is she crazy!? I have grown out my hair w/the info from LHCF longer in 2.5 years; way longer and healthier than all the years I had been to a salon! Dang, I should have asked her if the "trim" was free!

I would have not even yelled at her, I would have gotten up and left.

Unfortunately I don't have the luxury of walking out where I'm located :(. Believe it or not, this salon is actually the good one:perplexed. I can tell you horror stories for days about other salons here that cater to black hair.

I knew she would definitely have cut my natural hair. After she blew it out, it was hard to tell the difference between the two textures.

I remember as a kid, even my mom used to get yelled at when she pushed a client too hard. Most stylists just do not know how to deal with multiple textures. Glad you stood up for yourself.

Yeah, me too.

Me, three. I once made a hasty exit from a salon with wet hair after an encounter with a rigid know-it-all.

Me four, but I sympathize with your predicament OP (that salon being the only good one around your way). :nono: I'm glad that you did what you could do and told her to fall back. Some of these stylists are trippin for real. :nono:

Thank you for a happy ending to your story.....SHS....SMH!

Yeah, Hopefully!!! :nono: I would've been sorta scared to let her do it, after I had to yell at her!

Its a shame that some stylists make you feel as if your not in control of what happens to your hair! She should be happy all she got was a tongue lashing!

OP, Did you allow her to trim after the braids were in, or run the scissors up the braids like some of them tend to do?

Oh dear , is running the scissors up the braids a bad thing? I thought that was to remove the synthetic hair sticking out.

Wow. I bet the other patrons felt pretty awkward after that.

So how did the rest of the session go after you got loud with her?

I've never had braids but from what I've read on this forum, when they run the scissors up the braid to remove the synthetic hair, they will be also removing some of your actual hair.

WHAT?:perplexed Really, I've never heard of this before. One more reason to stir clear of salons from now on!

She said ok and left my hair alone after she finished blowdrying. she said something in French to one of the other girls in the salon that i didn't catch. 2 other girls braided my hair and despite the blowdrying, the girl that braided the back portion still managed to cause me substantial pain. Never going to a salon again. Ever!

Stylists have gotten their way for so long. They just think they can do anything to your hair and get away with it. I'm glad you got loud. Maybe next time she will just do what you asked. She already got away with the blow drying. I hope your braids look good. Don't let her stop your goal!

There have been a couple instances here where actual "Hair' was cut doing that, I cannot remember her name, and it wasn't that long ago, that a Female here, lost about 4 inches due to that!

Just be careful with that, for future references, tell the stylist not to clean it up, it doesn't really need it, they just want it to look neat.

My opinion is, they should be able to catch all the hairs in the braid to begin with! Remember, Your hair is in there, as well as the braid hair!

I am glad you stood your ground and the title of this thread is not "horrible experience at the salon" or something. I hope your braids look good.

In the future, would learning to do the braids yourself be an option? I had zero experience with styles of any kind before I found LHCF, but I learned how to braid and twist with extensions, saving myself both the headache of dealing with persistent stylists and the huge labor upcharges at salons. That way, you can keep wearing braids during your transition.

Good luck with the rest of your transition. I hope if you did let her run the scissors up the braids, none of your actual hair is damaged.
