Scalp/pore clogging ingredients, what you need to know about your topical growth aid

We all know that it is important to clarify the hair and scalp, you'll be surpirised at what this site lists as being clogging.

http://www.zerozits.com/Articles/acne_detective/printable.htm

According to this site, the highter the #, the more clogging it is. I use black castor oil weekly (which is VERY heavy) and wanted to find out if it plugged up the hair follicles. According to the list, it has a level of 1.

edited to add: Mineral oil, petroleum and cyclomethicone are listed as having no pore clogging properties, HOWEVER as they are not absorbed by the skin, they dont technically clog.... they just sit there and prevent anything from going in or out. Therefore they have a lubricating function, which is NOT good in terms of haircare.

Many of the oils we love are listed as being clogging. *I* interpret this as meaning that they actually have the ability to penetrate the skin/ scalp. Higher natural fat content makes it BETTER for our hair.

The COM #, that stands for comedogenic, The IRR stands for irritant. So the COM # is what you're looking for

Thanks, this info is pretty informative. I didn't realize that shampoos can actually be preventing my growth. Perhaps that's why ladies are seeing great results from these anti-fungal growth aids. Good to know!

Mineral Oil score is zero. That is extremely surprising

I found that surprising too. The ladies who swear by grease and stuff with petroleum in it will be pleased to know this. I still wont use products with mineral oil in them. Doogroo scalp stimulating oil has mineral oil at the top of the list and i know women (outside of lhcf) that swear by this.

To my understnding it makes you hair/scalp unable to breath. maybe it acts as a barrier, but doesn't necessarily clog

Lots of non-comedogenic/acnegenic makeup products use mineral oil. so i'm assuming this list was made under the assumption that your washing daily and using in moderation. I take the info with a grain of salt, because i know too much grease WILL clog your pores. Especially if used daily and left on the scalp for more than a week.

coconut oil is a 4, I find that hard to believe

they list cyclomethicone as being non irritating and non comedogenic... Maybe the high natural fat content in coconut oil makes it a 4 .

When i look at this list i think of coating vs absorbption... cyclomethicone and mineral oil coat whereas the skin/scalp actually absorb the natural oils listed.

I'm going to find the scientific source for the article and post it

What's also surprising is that according to the list, Petrolatum doesn't clog the pores either and most of listed natural oils clog the pores. Another thing I find curious is that I would have thought Shea butter would make an appearance on the list. That ingredient seems to be on the front of many jars and bottles these days ... hmmm ...

Exactly. I do not use any products with mineral oil for this reason and also I now only use natural products for my hair and skin.

ETA: Just seen that Propylene Glycol is also listed as zero. I would be interested in the reasoning behind these scores.

"Natural Oils - Wheat Germ Oil - COMM# 5" Thats a little hard to believe. Mineral oil being better than Wheat Germ Oil for your scalp? Maybe this article is referring to your complexion (hence the URL zerozits.com)...which still wouldnt make alot of sense.

Coconut oil is a 4????? Things that make you go hmmmmmmmm. I just used some with evoo overnight. My hair is super soft. Can't give that up now can I? :lachen:

This list is very surprising because the ingedients that are listed to be better are the ones that my hair does not like. Removing grease and things from my hair care has made it possible for me to have less breakage and still having free flowing hair with body - and my hair grows just fine.

I say, if it's not broke, don't fix it.

But, I find that the one cream that has solved dry skin on my face contains the ingredients that I would never put on my hair. There must be a difference there.

Well, I've always wanted to know what was the evidence behind mineral oil and petrolatum clogging the pores. People here and on other hair forums would always say "It's bad for your hair", but would never provide evidence that it does clog pores or stunts hair growth. Plus my hair loves grease and so do a lot of other women! So why stop using something that works well for your hair? Plus, I don't even put grease on my scalp, just my hair.

Could they be referring to the fact that MO does not penetrate the scalp, so it can not clog the pores. WG does penetrate so unless you wash/cowash it could clog your pores. :perplexed

I have a friend who is a chemist. I will fax these info to him and post his feedback.
