Rollerset over drying = more hair loss

My first time using roller set I got 3 small balls of hairs when using a small tooth comb to detangle my hair before placing it in rollers.
When my hair dried and I took it out I combed my hair with a wide toothed comb and more hairs than usual even came out and it looked really bad:( , even now on my shoulder am finding long stray hairs just fall
Please tell me what am I doing wrong and can you also answer would it be so bad if i swtich back to the hair dryer?

First off I would say ditch the small tooth comb. Also what are you using in terms of leave in products to set the hair? Wrapping lotions can be very drying since most of them are alcohol based. I set my hair with a lot of water, avocado butter, and seal it with a little oil.

Never detangle with a small tooth comb. When you rollerset, spray your leave-in, comb through the section with a wide tooth comb, and roll up the section with a roller. Make sure your hair is as smooth as possible around the roller. Once it dries, use your fingers to style, don't comb through the curls. HTH!

 ITA on not detangling with the small tooth!!! You were asking for massive shedding! I use a rattail comb to section off the hair and rake through before rolling, but its already been detangled in the shower and lots of creamy leave in rubbed thru.

ITA with the the other posters ditch the fine toothed comb. My first 2 RS I experienced alot of hair after I had dried the set. On my last attempt I went and bought a shower comb and after DC'ing when I went back into the shower I detangled with some detangler and the shower comb and then rinsed under the shower head. That was not a step I did on the other two RS attempts. I barely had any shedding with that RS. For the past month I have been saving sheded hairs in little baggies and I will write on the bag exactly what I did to my hair so I can tie that back to how many hair lost etc. I know for a fact that the detangling helped and I lost far fewer strands than the other 2 RS, and also less than my airdry and flat irons in the last month. Other factors: How many weeks post are you? What kinds of rollers are you using?

I also left this msg in your inbox.....

I think the small tooth comb was the problem, try a wide tooth one so you don't pull out your hair. Also, after your hair dries, is it hard? If so, then try to use a different moisturizer/leave-in that won't harden the hair ( I use scurl and/or NTM silk touch). I never use setting lotion because it makes my hair hard. Then finger comb your curls out or use a wide tooth comb to comb out the curls. I hope this helps.

I hate to admit it.....I use a small tooth comb to detangle when roller setting. I also use a lot of detangling spray and I hardly have any loss. I also detangle is tiny sections. It just helps me achieve a smoother roller set.

As a general rule, small tooth combs are not good on wet hair. It sounds like the wide tooth comb may be a better alternative for you.

Ditto one this!!

When you do rollerset properly, it is eons more healthier than a hand held blowdryer. Double if you are sitting under a hood dryer that distributes ionic heat evenly throughout the whole head. In your experience, you may notice less instantaneous shedding/breakage from the hand held, but your are weaking your hair overall making it weaker, more prone to damage.

Try giving it another shot with the tips in here. It took me at least 3 tries to get it dead right, once you do, you'll love it!
